I mean, it is still among the top five popular Pokemon along with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo. But it took 6 gens before it became truly viable. Honestly, it's typing sucks. Also, it's popularity as of late has taken a big hit from over-exposure.

Gen 4 is a very underrated generation. It overhaled moves into physical and special, which make a lot pokemons viable (prior to gen 4, pokemon like Sneasel is just unusable because it's stab moves are all special while sneasel has bad special attack). It also did a great job in giving evolution to past-gen pokemons that deserve an evolution, like tangrowth, gliscor, electivire, weavile, roserade, Mamoswine, Dusknoir... it just has great designs very consistently with only a few exceptions like Rhyperior. In contrast, half of gen 5 have designs that are just weird.

Incineroar is specifically based on "heel" wrestlers, the ones who play up the "bad guy"/dirty fighter role, as opposed to "faces" who are usually the good guys. They're the ones who intentionally try to get the crowds against them, cheat when the referee isn't looking, play up their jerkishness, and are basically, in theory, supposed to be the guys you love to hate if done well. (Though, as with many villains and antiheroes in fiction, it's not uncommon for heels to actually just be outright popular, despite or even *because* of their rough side, and while in the ring they're intentionally dicks a good amount are known to be among the nicest wrestlers to interact with as a fan, especially kids; this is where Incineroar's personality traits like not beating up foes it sees as too weak or injured to be a good fight and secretly enjoying the admiration of children and young Pokemon come from.) Hence the Dark type; Dark, despite what most people thing, isn't about literal darkness for the most part but about dirty tricks, underhanded moves, and the like, which is why most Dark moves are *physical* rather than special and consist of things like Sucker Punch and Fake Tears. Heck, its original Japanese name, "Aku", means "evil", not "dark". (This is also why it's weak to Fighting and Bug; those types have heroic associations in Japan due to stuff like super sentai shows, so they're good against what's basically the villain type.)* Incineroar's characterization and design all really, really play into the heel thing, and it's extremely obvious once you know about it. It's so thorough that, while I could see the initial concept being Fighting, I'm pretty sure that the idea of it specifically being a wrestling heel came very early in the process and was the idea for most of its development, and given the above regarding Fighting and Dark's respective associations, that would entail being Dark rather than Fighting being the plan for a long time too. * Another thing that was changed in translation is Night Slash, on a tangent from the above; its Japanese name translates to "Crossroad Killing", something that has nothing to do with literal darkness, because rather than that it's a reference to how some samurai in feudal Japan would test new swords by waiting at a crossroads, before striking down a passing commoner by surprise to see how well the sword cuts. It's a reference that'd be lost on most audiences outside of Japan, so it being changed in localization is understandable, but I think it's also one of the clearest pieces of evidence for how, at least initially, Dark-type didn't actually have anything to do with darkness. That, and literally every Dark move prior to Gen IV being physical, with IV adding *one* special Dark move, Dark Pulse, the first *actual* darkness-themed Dark move. (Ironically, though, prior to Gen IV each type was coded as either physical or special, with no moves within them deviating from that, and despite all offensive its moves at the time explicitly being physical actions, Dark as a type was coded as special. Meaning that for Gens II and III, moves like Beat Up and *Bite* were special moves, only for literally all of them to be made physical once those categories started being assigned to individual moves rather than types as a whole, which is kind of funny. My theory is that it was probably something like them looking at type concepts and deciding that "Evil" would be a weird thing to make physical, but that decision was made independently of looking at the actual *moves* in the type, because, well, like I said. Once they actually could define moves individually, literally all of those moves that had been special by default were made physical.)

I feel like it's the execution of it really. No one hates infernape despite being a monkey, while I've heard the term "creepy gorilla man" thrown around a few times likely because Rillaboom's battle model is just standing upright and it does make it look more humanoid than it should.

I love Primarina design. It looks elegant and graceful compared to anything we had before from the final starter evaluations. Decidueye looks cool but I'll go with Primarina for being unique.

I think it is interesting that when it comes to character design, the frogs, snakes, lizards -- things that are cold-blooded, and presumably less-likeable than a mammal or something cute and cuddly, tend to be very loved character designs. You can make them exceptionally quirky, stupid cute, cold and collected, or scary and powerful looking, and they tend to be received well. Sobble's evolution seems to be the only outlier in the list in terms of popularity.

Team Tepig and Delphox here lmao Tepig is just adorable and is my favorite first stage starter. I feel rlly bad that it's opinion got weighed down by it's meh evolutions. Bulbasaur being the most popular Kanto starter and Torchic and Blaziken inexplicably being the least favorite Hoenn starters is a perfect example of how people like to be contrarians. People have begun to like Bulbasaur because it was unloved and people apparently don’t like Blaziken as much now because it’s been so iconic and popular. And that has literally nothing to do with their designs, that’s people making up their opinions based on the opinions of others. At least that’s what those results say to me. No hate if you genuinely like Bulbasur or dislike Torchic, I just thought that was kinda wild and just goes to show how volatile and crazy opinions can be sometimes haha

I actually think it has something to do with how well the lines flow into each other, since adults probably care more about that than kids. The Bulbasaur line doesn't really have any out of place or awkward evolutions, whereas the Blaziken line has Combusken.

I mean, it's a ninja frog, which has a lot of history behind it in Japan (and among weebs, as a result), and its stats and typing are solid. Plus, with those stats, Protean becomes freaking _broken,_ making Gren one of the strongest non-legendary Pokémon in existence. It being popular was an inevitability.

Can I say this now, I LOVE SNIVY. Bcs of nostalgia being the fact that the first pokemon game I played was pokepark2 which the starters you played as we're Oshawott, Snivy, and Tepig. Plus playing as Pikachu as well. This is still my favorite pokemon game and I always would play as Snivy even when it hindered me. That being said when playing Pokemon games where I get to choose between any of the starters I choose Snivy without question.

its an emperor penguin with blades for arms that occurs naturally in nature so it can navigate harsh ice terrain as shown in Pokémon ranger. it is absolutely an amazing starter and my favorite

the Popplio line has always been a favorite of mine since i picked him up in ultra moon, i named him Hideri after the character from the anime "Blend S" and that character cross-dresses and wanted to be an idol, which fits with the whole "male brionne" aesthetic, he is still one of my most memorable starters of recent memory, Popplio protection squad!!!!

I never pick fire types anymore since they are almost ALWAYS half fighting type, it's like you just expect it by now, lol Let's be honest, inceneroar and cinderace are basically fighting types without the fighting type label I think they knew people were tired of it so they just slapped dark on one and made the other pure fire even though we all know what game freak wanted to make them lol

Incineroar and Cinderace are also the worst offenders for bad final evolutions of great starter Pokémon, imo. Litten is one of the cutest starters ever and having it grow into a big, fire breathing lion would've been so cool (unlike the underwhelming Pyroar from Gen VI), but then it turns into a freaking *cereals mascot* and Scorbunny becomes a furry. I can't see either of them as animals, they just look like humans in costumes and nobody can change my mind! The only worse starter is Chesnaught though, because while I liked it's pre-evolutions most within its gen, the final form just doesn't fit in with the rest at all! It looks like a Digimon that my brother had a plushie of. Don't know its name though, I never cared about Digimon at all, I just saw it as a cheap knockoff, So looking like a Digimon is the worst thing that can happen to a Pokémon! Chesnaught might not be as outright hideous as some other Pokémons (eg: Incineroar, Jynx, Garbador), but literally no other Pokémon makes me feel like it comes from the wrong franchise!

I love fennekin and it’s line I thought a psychic fire type was a really cool way to break the fire fighting chain and the idea of making it a firefox was really well executed I think the reason why fennekins line didn’t get much credit is because of the stick he gets in the later two evolutions

It pains me to see my 3 favourites in low tiers: Emboar, Primarina and Inteleon. Emboar can hit like a truck while also having access to a huge range of moves, and an incredible shiny to top it off. I love the other two's concepts, with Primarina harnessing song and voice based powers (like the thing it's based off of) and Inteleon being a james bond style assassin, and don't even get me started on the incredible G-max form...

Blaziken has always been my favourite Pokemon since it's early introduction in the anime. Easily one of the most nostalgic moments from my childhood was seeing this unknown badass appear in the Johto League, and that battle against Ash was so cool, the design, the voice, the blaze kick. One moment in that battle I'll never forget was when Bayleef used vine whip, Blaziken grabs the vines with one hand, and then casually pulls in Bayleef, and then also later Blaze Kicks Ash's Charizard in the face. I'll never forget how emotional I got when May's Combusken FINALLY evolved, seeing someone from the group own a Blaziken was amazing... even if it was for only 2 episodes. As soon as the Gen 3 games came out, I grabbed Pokemon Ruby and chose Torchic without any hesitation. Blaziken is just such a fun Pokemon to use, so many awesome moves to run on it, one of my favourite Pokemon in game to this day is the event Blazikenite holding Blaziken (technically Torchic) I got in Pokemon X. My Mega Blaziken was Adamant nature, with Flare Blitz, Brave Bird, Close Combat and Thunder Punch, along with the Speed Boost ability, my Blaziken pretty much one shot everyone without even taking hits itself, I love Blaziken so much! 🔥

In generation 4 earthquake was OP so Torterra naturally learning the move was BIG, and fire types were rarer than legendary pokemon so Infernape was also a great choice for team balance. I'm not surprised that Empoleon came in last in those polls.

For middle evolutions I think the "loveable awkwardness," even if people say they like it, isn't actually a popular feature. I think the biggest thing is that they are a good pokemon in their own right (cute, cool, interesting) and: an element of suspense/tension/potential in the design that makes you excited for the resolution of the final evolution.

Yeah the awkward designs is definitely a feature I don't like. In a lot of cases they had cute first forms but then the second forms completely ruin them. Marshtomp, Pignite, Quilladin and Brionne are the ones that suffer most from this imo. In some cases the 3rd forms turn out great after this e.g. Primarina and Swampert, but others they're just as bad e.g. Emboar and Chesnaught. Or at least that's my opinion. I much prefer cool 2nd forms like Grovyle, Servine, Monferno etc.

Personally I find the colour pallet fantastic, and the proportion are completely deliberate, they put empathis on the arms, to make them and the pokemon appear bigger and therefore more powerful. It just has this gentle giant vibe, it looks wise. I also like emboar but mostly because of nostalgia.

Thank you for doing the starter Pokémon and their evolutions polls. I actually did the same thing on my own on reddit, but the mods deleted them. I can still see my own topics and results for myself though. Only about 100-1,500 people voted on each of my polls, compared to about 6,500 people who voted in each of yours. The results were mostly the same as yours, but with some differences. The Starter Pokémon and evolutions that won in each of my polls were, Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Charizard, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Typhlosion, Mudkip, Grovyle, Swampert, Piplup, Monferno, Torterra, Oshawott, Dewott, Serperior, Fennekin, Braixen, Greninja, Rowlet, Torracat, Decidueye, Scorbunny, Raboot and Rillaboom. For me, my favorite Pokémon starters are all the fire starters in each region.

Probably because in comparison to the other 2, the evolution line has the largest jump in designs. Had they given Chespin like a little Chestnut helmet or something in order to get people to think "Oh hes a little Knight!" I think he wouldve gone over a lot better. I do agree that Chestnaught looks cool, but I think its prevolitons do too little to set the tone.

Chesnaught is a pretty cool starter pokemon. While I choose Froakie´s line (and my second favorite from kalos is Fennekin´s line) I think that Chesnaught also has a great design. Maybe it got a bit overshadowed by the other two for being the only one that looks more different to its first stage. But I think Chesnaught would be way more popular if its shiny colors were the regular colors. It looks more similar to chespin, the colors look great and the shiny would be like a white knight if the regular colors where used as the shiny version.

But for some reason, when it became a Serperior, YO, I have never ever struggled LESS in my life against any Pokémon in any Pokémon game eveeer. She would randomly dodge moves like every other turn, just insanely frequently, and could 1-2 hit KO anything. She was a sweeper to say the least. I got through practically the whole game with my Serperior. There were many times I gave 0 shits about Fire types and never switched her out of battle, which I would never do with any other grass type.

I didn’t really like any starter after gen 4. My favorite was gen 1 but when these games first came out I always went for the fire one because that type was usually the most limited until they started to come out with more.

I'm still a huge fan of Ivysaur. It's so badass and cute at the same time, has perfect coloring and just a great design. Also it's a perfect transition between Bulbasaur and Venusaur. PS: I feel bad for Chikorita, it is so adorable.

Meganium is actually my favorite Pokémon. Chikorita was my first starter I ever picked in crystal as a kid because I thought it was cute. And it’s really not THAT bad it’s just because the gyms in johto. It gets a lot better when you get into kanto

It's terrible! The whole evolution line sticks out in a bad way with its disharmonic colors and weird patterns, but Croconaw is the worst. WHY DOES IT WEAR CAVEMAN CLOTHES?!! it's so random and incoherent with both it's pre-evolutions and it's evolution! Thank goodness Gen IX finally gave us a decent crocodile starter Pokémon.

Even for people who don't pay attention to things like battle prowess, it's impossible not to notice that Meganium is a Venusaur clone, without none of the things that makes Venusaur successful. It's not even useful -- it cannot learn Sleep Powder at all and Leech Seed only through breeding. It has good defenses, but its special attack is subpar, thus making its Grass moves weak, and no same-type attack bonus from Poison moves since it's not Poison type. It doesn't even get a relevant hidden ability, like Natural Cure. It was doomed to fail from the get-go, and Game Freak has never cared to fix it.

Combusken may be too phallus-shaped for many people. It does look kinda weird. It is fine though Torchic is mega cute and Blaziken looks absolutely ferocious, it just has the steepest competition of any Generation, with the Treecko line being perfect through and through and Mudkip line being close to perfect as well. Torchic doesn't quite stand out and Combusken looks a bit too odd in comparison, but it still would be everybody's favorite in a lot of other Generations.

Ive always leaned to grass starters. Probably because bulbasaur was the first started I beat a Pokémon game with. As I got older, the final evolution definitely holds more weight in my decision.

Being introduced to Pokemon with Black version I loved gen 5 and the whole Snivy line in particular. I also was never a fan of Tepig, but I'm surprised people claim to dislike this version of the starters the most considering Samurott has a cool appearance and Serperior's appearance is underrated and unique being one of the least human-like of the Starters.

I'm really surprised by Serperior's results in this poll, wow. My favorite alongside Venusaur and Greninja. They gave it an actual personality and theme, which is something you can't say about every starter? What exactly is Samurott's personality, for example? Many of them are a bit bland despite having okay looks, but it's definitely not the case with Serperior. Also, in terms of design, Serperior's design fits its personality perfectly, it's supposed to be like royalty, thus the details in the patterns and colors. To add to that, it has got a pretty cool shiny, which never hurts. Plus, it is way above average for the starters in terms of combat viability. Since many of the starters have evenly spread stats so as to be viable in your playthroughs, not many of them tend to shine in competitive, but Serperior back in gen 5 or 6 it was actually OU tier in the Smogon tier list, thanks to its Hidden Ability Contrary, which reverses stat changes. Use Leaf Storm with Serperior, and its SpA goes up 2 levels. Pair that with its highest stat, speed, and you've got yourself a very good sweeper. It lacks a little bit in type coverage due to a lackluster movepool, but no one is perfect. Give Serperior some love, people :(

Precisely my thoughts as well! Samurot always felt like it was straight out of left field for a final evolution, the quadrupedal design just ruins it for me. On the other hand, I'm always confused by Inteleon being disliked. I get why the gen 8 final forms are relatively unpopular, but is Inteleon really any worse than Cinderace? At least Inteleon's skinny-ness cuts back on the human feel it gives off, Cinderace's humanlike proportions are just plain creepy. Thoughts?

In a meta saturated with Talonflame, Volcarona and Heatran, Serperior gets hard walled. And there's Mega Pinsir and Mega Char Y. It may have it's spot in the OU tier in gen V but it is too much of an easy counter. I'd rather slap a choice band on my Reckless Emboar at least any potential switch ins will not be happy taking a hit from EMBEAST.

This is very interesting. I did calculations on all my starters to see how many were the least popular. I separated the evolutions into their own categories and determined each category's popularity, then I counted how many total evolutions were in the lowest rung. My results were: Evolution 1: 37.5% (3/8 starters) Low popularity Evolution 2: 25% (2/8 starters) Low popularity Evolution 3: 50% (4/8 starters) C 50% or lower All evolutions: 37.5% (9/24 evolutions) in the lowest rungs. Side note: I also found that I apparently have a knack for picking starters with the most popular middle evolutions. I got 50% clear winners, and 25% great popularity for the ones I chose (those being Ivysaur, Monferno, Torracat, Raboot, Bayleef, and Braixen,).
