What are you talking about?? I've literally seen that costume in many different styles, and have even worked on a production of Swan Lake myself. The way it's facing doesn't make a lick of difference, the way it specifically looks changes from production to production depending on the costume designer for that particular production. The important part is to make sure Odette has swan wings on the side of her head and Ron's version does. There's no design bible for Swan Lake that specifies which directiont the wings are supposed to face lol. What an utterly baffling nitpick that has no actual basis. I personally would have made female Diggerby a bit fatter or at least stayed the same as the male, because female rabbits have a dewlap, which is a chunk of fat by their neck they use to get fur, so it would make more sense for the female to have a bit more size to it, or at least the same as the male. And also, some of the choices you made to gender differences here are ones that don’t make much sense for an animal, like a doe doesn’t have a more feminine snout than a buck and hens don’t have smaller beaks then roosters. Otherwise great video and I like a lot of the designs, but I feel a lot of changes you made are more based on what we as humans see as feminine vs masculine rather than the evolutionary reasons why some animals have sexual dimorphism. And just so you know, this is more a critique than hating, again I like a lot of these designs, Lanturn and orangaru being favorites for sure!! something i always wished was for male combee to have an evolution where he becomes like a knight or something, and they could even have some fun with the way to evolve it like, K.o. two pokemon in a double battle with vespiqueen being on the field. like it would be so cool and match the royal theme
@stormylobby4 ай бұрын
The thing is, if they were going to have a Combee evolution based on a knight, it’d be biologically accurate to have it be female only as well. This is because female bees, or worker bees, take up all of the roles that keep the hive running. Meanwhile, male bees, or drones, are only useful for mating with the queen and ensuring that there’s a steady supply of future worker bees. Outside of that, drones do nothing other than sit around and eat all day. That being said, an idea for an evolution for male Combee that I think would be interesting, as well as accurate to bee biology, is a Bug/Ghost type evolution based on wraiths, as well as the role of “dark lords” that you’ll often see in fantasy, and maybe possibly even pull a bit of loose inspiration from the Asian Giant Hornet, that’s triggered after a male Combee takes so much damage from Ice Type moves (I’d say take chip damage from hail, but considering Gen 9 reworked it into snow, that wouldn’t work anymore) without fainting ala Basculegion. This is based on how, in the time leading up to winter, the worker bees will kick all of the male drones out of the hive in order to ensure that the rest of the hive will have enough honey in order to survive the cruel winter months, thus resulting in the drones slowly freezing to death. I imagine the explanation for this would be that, while most male Combee perish in the cold after being kicked out of their hive, a select few individuals that have the strongest of wills to keep on going, no matter what, will evolve into this hypothetical wraith bee-hornet (HWBH for short). After evolving, they’re filled with a burning desire for revenge against their former hive mates and will try to steal the honey that the female Combee make (thus the Asian Giant Hornet inspiration, as AGHs are infamous for attacking bee colonies, where they’ll kill bees via decapitation, eat their honey, and steal larvas and thoraxes of decapitated adults to feed to their own young), as well as try to take out the Vespiquen leading it. I’d imagine that this HWBH would have a new ability that acts like Levitate, but for Ice Type moves instead of Ground Type, as well as gets access to a fair few Ice Type moves itself. Embracing what caused it to perish to make it stronger, if you will. Maybe it could even have a new Ice Type move that acts like Freeze Dry that targets Bug Types instead of Water Types. Of course, one could argue that this wouldn’t make sense since most Combee are male, but I propose an easy solution to that issue. Have it stated in a Pokédex entry for Combee that researchers have recently discovered that there’s actually many more female Combee than males in the wild, however, females tend to stick in small groups to watch each other’s back to avoid predators, as well as humans. Males, meanwhile, don’t get anyone to look out for them due to being considered less important in the hive hierarchy, and are often forced to fend for themselves, especially in the months before winter. Not only would this explain the existence of HWBH, but also give an in-universe explanation for why there’s so many gosh dang male Combee in the wild in-game. Plus, it lets people choose whether they want an easy mon to find, but tough to evolve, or a tough mon to find, but easy to evolve.

I won't go into all of your designs (that would take forever) but I would argue that the biggest things that don't work in execution are the difference in overall size and the removal of parts (like the female heracross' horn). The games have been dabbling with adding size differences of individual Pokémon lately (Pokémon go being the biggest example), and the removal of body parts like horns would mean that they can't learn attack that involve those parts. I do think however that this is a good video, as you tend to think up of some interesting ideas. So I think this is at the very least a good taking point and thought exercise

Actually Nidoking and Nidoqueen are partially more similar, but also with the difference that Nidoking naturally learns Megahorn, while Nidoqueen gets Superpower. With these already existing Gender differences, there is no reason why the same Logic couldn't be applied on Heracross. Just remove Megahorn from the female's moveset, or replace it with another move that the male won't get. Besides... Gastly can learn the Elemental Punches. Primeape and Alakazam can learn Iron Tail. I'll be upfront with my critiques, but to give myself context I struggle a lot defining masculine vs feminine traits, and resonate with the idea that they're very arbitrary and loosely defined as an idea. Take that in mind with the thoughts I'd like to share. I think overall your ideas came out well and I personally want to bring up my own thoughts is all, as subjective as they are. I'd honestly love to see what you do in the future with this concept and see how you change as time goes on! As proof of concept, there's a lot here that is rather well in theory, but there are some that either really work in practice, or fumble on the execution of the idea and why the original differs from nature. Take Heracross versus Ariados. Heracross loses a key feature of its design philosophy, but Ariados adds to their own. If I had one complaint that I did wish to address, and I could entirely be missing the point of this video and I apologize if I am, the beliefs you express versus the designs on display don't always align themselves as fully as I think they should. What do I mean by this? Using your Milotic example at 4:54 of "Femininity isn't exclusive towards women" there are a few of your designs that really don't push that point further or rely too hard on the tropes of masculine vs feminine rather than properly explore that to a greater effect. A lot of your female Pokemon for example tend to subtly have too many smaller features, such as height and proportion and doesn't really come across as applying that logic to its fullest or challenges that belief (Excluding ones like Dewgong, Cyclizar, and Ursaring to name a few that have more poignant choices). There are some that work, very well such as Ursaring, and others like Alakazam where it feels unnecessary. Really out of all the designs you've done, I think a majority have merit. Cyclizar, Conkeldurr, Stantler, etc. most of the designs have a lot of redeeming and sometimes endearing qualities. I do however think you went a bit heavy handed on one of them. Your Delphox. It might just be me, but Delphox doesn't read as masculine or feminine in my opinion. They're an archetypical mage. Yes, they are based on Witches which are more commonly a title given to women in modern culture, but their origins were gender neutral (Wicca or Wicce). I think leaning really hard on the wizardry themes both changes way too much, and also showcases the antithesis of the more healthy gender differences you've done previously. A small bit of beard alone would've been fine, or messing with how the fur to lean harder into looking akin to a robe would be substantial enough (Though that's more a gut reaction of an idea rather than a suggestion, it'd be something worth workshopping further). Regardless, whether you take anything from this or not is fine, I'm just happy to share my thoughts and hope you enjoy reading this if you are, there's no animosity from me just my general subjective thoughts. Keep up the good work you do! 👍

I enjoy the colour variations and slight changes to a design, as like you said it makes the Pokémon feel more special. I really like the Lantern variation and the others that messed around with the body shape a bit more like Dewgong. The Sawsbuck design I feel was a big miss making them bright pink, as it just made it quite ugly and too overpowering. I feel you should of replicated the seasonal foliage on their front hair tuff instead, like winter Sawsbuck and have types of bushes for the seasons. Its a lot less subtle and achieves the same vibes as the male counter part. Also, the designs like Machamp just don't sit right with me and feel you've done the same thing you said others did, which was to give them an hourglass figure. Reducing the muscle mass has possibly done that. The pokemon is already too humaniod and so I feel something like smaller head crests and beaks for males as they are more prone to fighting or showing off and ware them down compared to the females, as to add more of the animalistic features into the creature design.

@@Cajun_Seasoning Depends. Lovely details in general are a big factor for making high quality games when they contribute anything for the experience while playing. e.g.: if they make you laugh, add information, help with worldbuilding or are just adorable. In my opinion, neither the specific Pokemon nor the game benefit from these and that's why they went on making fewer and more noticeable ones so that they actually have an impact.

I love the differences and how thought out they are but I’m kinda sad he didn’t get more creative with the bearded/mustached Pokémon then just removing the beard/stache on the female forms. Many female animals in nature are just as hairy as the males and also have beards (ex: goats) this seems just like kinda adding human sexual dimorphism onto animals imo. Overall I still love the video and think Ron did a great job

I like these, but a note is that female rabbits are larger than the males, so female diggersby should remain fat and if anything get fatter. Female rabbits also tend to have this pronounced pouch at the base of their neck? I have no idea what it’s called, but maybe more fluff could’ve alluded to that. Also, controversial, but I don’t think female Machamp should be slimmed down! I’m also just generally not a fan of Pokémon with human clothing, so I guess the unitard didn’t resonate with me either, but I do prefer it to, like, a sports bra, because why would a lizard have boobs?

Yeah, I feel like GF's female Heracross still wins out on this one; it still needs to be able to use Megahorn, after all, and those antennae aren't gonna cut it as substitutes. I'd like to see dimorphism for Greedent. The base form kinda reminds me of a male dwarf with that dark bushy beard pattern. Also, Bellossom leans pretty far into the hula girl look-a male form would be interesting to see for that one.

I didn't like some of them, but most of them were absolutely brilliant! I especially liked the subtle ones, but I think that Machamp might've been my favorite. Fun fact; it's easier (on average) for men to develop stronger arms, while woman tend to have stronger legs. Maybe the same would be true in Machamp?

I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not have a smaller male Lanturn seeing how it was such a huge difference in real life. Female Conkeldurr was giving off that granny vibe and I love the subtle purple in female Machamp that really suited it.

I think a staff and wizard’s beard should be reserved for a Mega Delphox design. Maybe the male has a beard and moustache combo, while the females have whiskers. Also, slap on a wizard hat for good measure, and maybe make it a witch hat for the female.

"It's more interesting to have a masculine female Pokémon and a feminine male Pokémon. Cause that's how real life is, it spices things up", thank you for making that clear. It's fun to experiment with different designs and I personally tend to like masculine looking Pokémon or masculine forms of feminine looking Pokémon more, but that doesn't mean feminine looking Pokémon need a masculine form. It's generally just nice to be able to choose. And it's even more fun when you use actual biology and zoology to make realistic changes that are sometimes subtle and sometimes more noticeable depending on the animal. What I like most about your changes is that you don't look to make the counter parts look super masculine or feminine, just different in a way that has the wished effect but don't change the Pokémon too much.

Ngl, I've never been a fan of when other fans' "gender variants" of humanoid Pokemon are just "make female look like hooman wooman". Anything that's based solely on stereotypical human gender roles throws me off, even when they cropped up in the official variants, cuz these aren't humans no matter their shape so it's a bit silly for designers to conform them to what our society thinks of as masculine or feminine. I like the ones that are more like the real animals a lot of the more animalistic Pokemon are based on myself, like your take on male Lanturn (though when I first glanced at the thumbnail I was Concerned you'd done the reverse with the way it was laid out lol). Honestly I like most of yours here way better than a lot of people's take on the concept, no surprise from all your previous vids but you clearly understand what GameFreak was going for with theirs. Like seriously, there's this rather infamous one where what they did with male Primarina was basically take everything that made him a Primarina and replaced it with haphazard spiky shapes. Ew. No. Why. That's a totally different Pokemon at that point.
@convalaria4 ай бұрын
Yeah, part of the thing that makes probopass, theivul and machamp charming to me is that the females still had moustaches and muscles. The animal based ones he made were really cool though, the male ariados particularly. The only human stereotype one i liked was squakabilly, but thats just because i like the female design more than the male in general
@PuppyLuver2564 ай бұрын
@@Lingeringhorrors Yeah, and on top of that a lot of human women aren't even automatically slimmer than a lot of human men either, even outside of the scope of bodybuilders and strongwomen. (I'm sure my position as a fat femme nb hasn't colored my perspective on this at allllll lol)
@PuppyLuver2564 ай бұрын
@@convalaria Honestly I think it's a relief that GameFreak themselves limited the gender stereotyping in their variants (outside of gender-exclusive evos, and even then there are still male Gardevoir and female Glalie) to such a small number. The only ones I can think of are Pikachu, which makes sense because mascot = cute, and Wobbuffet, which is just Amazing XD
@professoryeetus89554 ай бұрын
@@PuppyLuver256 i think a lot about how in human sexual dimorphism, more fat is a feminine trait even though socially it's come to be seen as less feminine somehow (and i'm a skinny masc nb who's tired of people equating skinniness with femininity -- on another note regardless of any of this different individuals are more predisposed to different body types so i'm also tired of people acting like ""healthy"" or ""natural"" in relation to body types is one size fits all :,)
