I always forget how many pokémon actually do have gender differentiation. I could not, for the longest time, figure out the difference between female and male Venusaur until recently when I noticed that the female Venusaur's flowering plant has a Pistil, which is the female reproductive part of a flower, while the male Venusaur does not. It crazy how minor the difference can be while still making complete sense ngl

7:24 i dont like the head feathwrs being flipped for the female swanna. The head feathers, and the shape of the chest feathers, are actually inspited by ballet, specifically Swan Lake. Odette in the ballet wears feathers on the side of her head in that style, so flipping those on the female actually takes away from that inspiration
@donovanfaust3227
@donovanfaust3227 Күн бұрын
What are you talking about?? I've literally seen that costume in many different styles, and have even worked on a production of Swan Lake myself. The way it's facing doesn't make a lick of difference, the way it specifically looks changes from production to production depending on the costume designer for that particular production. The important part is to make sure Odette has swan wings on the side of her head and Ron's version does. There's no design bible for Swan Lake that specifies which directiont the wings are supposed to face lol. What an utterly baffling nitpick that has no actual basis. Seriously where are you getting this from?

I personally would have made female Diggerby a bit fatter or at least stayed the same as the male, because female rabbits have a dewlap, which is a chunk of fat by their neck they use to get fur, so it would make more sense for the female to have a bit more size to it, or at least the same as the male. And also, some of the choices you made to gender differences here are ones that don’t make much sense for an animal, like a doe doesn’t have a more feminine snout than a buck and hens don’t have smaller beaks then roosters. Otherwise great video and I like a lot of the designs, but I feel a lot of changes you made are more based on what we as humans see as feminine vs masculine rather than the evolutionary reasons why some animals have sexual dimorphism. And just so you know, this is more a critique than hating, again I like a lot of these designs, Lanturn and orangaru being favorites for sure!! Just some opinions I have as an artist, science nerd, and Pokémon fan!!

I don't think that any Pokémon would benefit from small differences like your Oranguru. There is a reason why gamefreak left these small ones behind. They are not noticed by many players because they are not visible on first glance and just mean more work in upcomming generations. But I do love and wish for more of the big changes. Your Ariados, Lanturn or Sirfetch'd are the ones we need. They make people think twice about these Pokémon. Even Delphox and Probopass do a great job at that. Nice work! ps: It's funny seeing the like counter going up every few seconds while writing this comment

@jonasvetter1310
@jonasvetter1310 Күн бұрын
@@Cajun_Seasoning Depends. Lovely details in general are a big factor for making high quality games when they contribute anything for the experience while playing. e.g.: if they make you laugh, add information, help with worldbuilding or are just adorable. If you look at Pikachu, the female has a heart-like shape at the end of its tail, which is just adorable and sweet. When it evolves it only has a little blunt spot compared to male Raichu and I don't think anyone benefits from that and certainly noone will change their opinion of Raichu based on that difference. And that is something that is true for very many of the pre gen. 5 differences. In my opinion, neither the specific Pokemon nor the game benefit from these and that's why they went on making fewer and more noticeable ones so that they actually have an impact.

I won't go into all of your designs (that would take forever) but I would argue that the biggest things that don't work in execution are the difference in overall size and the removal of parts (like the female heracross' horn). The games have been dabbling with adding size differences of individual Pokémon lately (Pokémon go being the biggest example), and the removal of body parts like horns would mean that they can't learn attack that involve those parts. I do think however that this is a good video, as you tend to think up of some interesting ideas. So I think this is at the very least a good taking point and thought exercise

I enjoy the colour variations and slight changes to a design, as like you said it makes the Pokémon feel more special. I really like the Lantern variation and the others that messed around with the body shape a bit more like Dewgong. The Sawsbuck design I feel was a big miss making them bright pink, as it just made it quite ugly and too overpowering. I feel you should of replicated the seasonal foliage on their front hair tuff instead, like winter Sawsbuck and have types of bushes for the seasons. Its a lot less subtle and achieves the same vibes as the male counter part. Also, the designs like Machamp just don't sit right with me and feel you've done the same thing you said others did, which was to give them an hourglass figure. Reducing the muscle mass has possibly done that. The pokemon is already too humaniod and so I feel something like smaller head crests and beaks for males as they are more prone to fighting or showing off and ware them down compared to the females, as to add more of the animalistic features into the creature design.

I'll be upfront with my critiques, but to give myself context I struggle a lot defining masculine vs feminine traits, and resonate with the idea that they're very arbitrary and loosely defined as an idea. Take that in mind with the thoughts I'd like to share. I think overall your ideas came out well and I personally want to bring up my own thoughts is all, as subjective as they are. I'd honestly love to see what you do in the future with this concept and see how you change as time goes on! As proof of concept, there's a lot here that is rather well in theory, but there are some that either really work in practice, or fumble on the execution of the idea and why the original differs from nature. Take Heracross versus Ariados. Heracross loses a key feature of its design philosophy, but Ariados adds to their own. If I had one complaint that I did wish to address, and I could entirely be missing the point of this video and I apologize if I am, the beliefs you express versus the designs on display don't always align themselves as fully as I think they should. What do I mean by this? Using your Milotic example at 4:54 of "Femininity isn't exclusive towards women" there are a few of your designs that really don't push that point further or rely too hard on the tropes of masculine vs feminine rather than properly explore that to a greater effect. A lot of your female Pokemon for example tend to subtly have too many smaller features, such as height and proportion and doesn't really come across as applying that logic to its fullest or challenges that belief (Excluding ones like Dewgong, Cyclizar, and Ursaring to name a few that have more poignant choices). There are some that work, very well such as Ursaring, and others like Alakazam where it feels unnecessary. Really out of all the designs you've done, I think a majority have merit. Cyclizar, Conkeldurr, Stantler, etc. most of the designs have a lot of redeeming and sometimes endearing qualities. I do however think you went a bit heavy handed on one of them. Your Delphox. It might just be me, but Delphox doesn't read as masculine or feminine in my opinion. They're an archetypical mage. Yes, they are based on Witches which are more commonly a title given to women in modern culture, but their origins were gender neutral (Wicca or Wicce). I think leaning really hard on the wizardry themes both changes way too much, and also showcases the antithesis of the more healthy gender differences you've done previously. A small bit of beard alone would've been fine, or messing with how the fur to lean harder into looking akin to a robe would be substantial enough (Though that's more a gut reaction of an idea rather than a suggestion, it'd be something worth workshopping further). Regardless, whether you take anything from this or not is fine, I'm just happy to share my thoughts and hope you enjoy reading this if you are, there's no animosity from me just my general subjective thoughts. Keep up the good work you do! 👍

I had ideas for more gender differences: Male Clefairy, Clefable, and Cleffa would not only be blue, but their designs would be nearly similar to the former’s earliest beta sprite. Male Alolan Dugtrio would have shorter hair in the shape of a shaved head for the rear head, a bowl cut for the right head, and curly hair with a receeding hairline for the left head (Can you guess the reference?). Female Salamence would have smaller wings and have two white shell-like plates on its upper torso resembling a bra. Male Leavanny would resemble a male daycare worker while retaining aspects of the female. Female Beartic would lack the ice beard, and instead have icicles resembling spiky hair, as well as being less bulky and having a more yellowish color like some real-world polar bears. Female Cinderace would have a more feminine body shape, as well as having the ears resemble a ponytail and having a pattern resembling a female soccer a.k.a. European football player. Female Lucario would have a more feminine body shape, as well as a black patch across the upper torso and longer “dreadlocks”. Male Druddigon would have a more violet-colored body, larger vestigal wings, and the “fangs” on the edges of its upper jaw would be longer, while Female Druddigon would have shorter spikes around its face and a white underbelly. Female Greninja would have a more feminine body shape and look more like a kunoichi than a regular ninja, while also keeping the tongue in the mouth instead of wearinf it like a scarf. Female Charizard would have a more pinkish color, as well as shorter horns and shorter wing spikes. Female Snorlax would be noticably skinnier and have a more feminine body shape while still being plump and sleepy (think TPCI’s answer to a cake-eating character from an underrated PS3 game from 2009). Male Lapras would be a darker shade of blue, have visible fangs, and be larger and slightly bulkier. Female Pinsir would have much smaller horns that lack spikes, similar to female stag beetles in real life. Like the above, Female Vikavolt would have smaller mandibles that look more like wire cutters. Male Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, and Igglybuff would be more of a cloudy white, and the hair curls are more pompadour-like in shape. Female Machoke would follow the same design you gave Female Machamp, since you already mentioned how different your Female Kadabra would be. Female Drowzee would have the brown part extended to reach the neck, making it look like it’s wearing a brown unitard. Female Meowth and Female Persian would have brown markings over their noses and mouths and on their front and hind paws to look more like siamese cats, while Male Meowth and Male Persian lack the markings on the hind paws and ears, with the latter having a larger forehead gem and brown spots all over its body to resemble a leopard. Male Lopunny would have a more masculine shape, meaner-looking eyes, and larger fluff around its paws that look like boxing gloves. Female Shroomish would have a green head with tan spots, shorter flaps, a tan underside with tan feet, and a less dour expression with tan lipstick-like markings. Female Tentacruel would have a shorter “beak”. Female Fearow would have a smaller crest, duller colors, and would be a smaller size with a shorter beak.

What if Gen 1 introduced genders and gender-variants? While merging both Nidoran lines into one. Also if Gallade existed sooner in Gen 3 as Gardevoir's male variant(with the same Dex entry), and give Kirlia the same treatment. Heck, give Lopunny's male counterpart a Bugs Bunny-esque design(as the current feminine design looked like Lola Bunny). Had there not been any limitations.

I swear I've wanted to draw gender differnces for pokemon,but like everything else,I seem to give up way too damn easily and I end up watching a youtuber (you,cause your my favorite youtuber and your the only one that does everything ♥) do it much faster with plenty of motivation while I suffer artblock 95% of the time causing my motivation to die in 5 minutes,artblock sucks yall

hornless Heracross looks so bald. My favourite is definitely the Lanturn design. I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not have a smaller male Lanturn seeing how it was such a huge difference in real life. Female Conkeldurr was giving off that granny vibe and I love the subtle purple in female Machamp that really suited it.

I like a lot of these designs. They feel way more thought out than some other designs I've seen for gender differences in Pokemon, a lot of which basically amounted to giving the female Pokemon hair, eyelashes, and bra-like patterns (as a woman I just generally find that off-putting). I like how you drew inspiration from real-life animals! Male Lanturn and female Machamp are my favorites. I'm also usually not a big fan of male Pokemon getting beards or big mustaches as gender differences, but you made male Delphox work well - The beard doesn't feel too distracting and flows well with the rest of the design and its inspiration.

Fun fact about axolotls: They actually dont reach true maturity as they are a salamander they usually perform a sort of metamorphosis tto lose their gills and become terrestrial. However these are rare as axolotls are basically in a constant juvenile state and most go their whole life without reaching this state as its only achievable if certain conditions are met or it is forced, The stage has several health problems and loses their regeneration Anyways just fun fact as i seen axolotls be mentioned in the video

Okay, the female Conkeldurr is actually a huge improvement. Usually I hate the whole line. Conkeldurr's nasty head boil thing looks so squishy and like it'd wiggle and sway a lot and it just makes me feel all kinds of grossed out. It just reminds me of that one kid's face boil from Fairly Odd Parents. But you turning it into concrete hair on the female one made it so much better. Now it's not nasty anymore, it's a cute "hair" bun. :)

My head canon is that they do not implement these size differences and different horns so that there is not as much work in calculating their dimensions. Especially after moves started to be affect by weight.

Probopass doesn't work at all. Maybe having the two mini faces have the mustache instead (make it look more like jewelry even i stead of hair), but your change makes it look like a dad and his son. You made your female Probopass into kid-aged Dan Avidan.

while I agree with the Dewgong change to give males larger horns, I would have also made female Dewgong's fins and tail longer/wider. actual dugongs were thought to be what inspired the alluring sirens/mermaids tricking sailors to their doom so the long fins and tail could look like a flowing dress/sleeves

I definitely agree with you on all of these especially the machamp I personally think a unitard styled pattern would definitely feel appropriate for matchamp’s whole line for a gender difference I definitely think a similar thing could be done for the hitmon line with maybe hitmonlee have more of a slimmer build and be somewhat based of uma Thurman from kill bill which her outfit was based on Bruce lee’s iconic yellow suit, with hitmonchan I think smaller gloves with maybe a pinkish tone a female work out clothes inspired patterns, hitmontop maybe hav it legs and whole stature be a bit smaller than the males and maybe have the tip of the head that it spins on more like a bun shape
