This was extremely clear and straightforward. I struggled with other tutorials that went faster than this one because they didn't lay out as may details as I needed as a beginner. Thank you so much for making this tutorial.

Love your videos, I watched all in your truenas list. Would you mind doing some more? I'd like to know use cases for "sync" datasets and how that works. You mention this a bit in your virtualization video but are there other use cases to use sync? I'd also like to know how you'd add a ftp server to existing pool/vdev? And last I'm still trying to understand what exactly are the differences between pool/vdev/datasets. Since you can create datasets within datasets. And I've not seen you create multiple pools or vdevs in one video. Thank you! Your videos have been so helpful in me understanding more about this system.

i have the same prob... theres some kind of limiter somewhere, both my truenas and windows pc are gig attached, but very clearly seem to hover consistently at ~95 or so mbits/sec. This is identical for read and write. I have disabled compression.

Thank you for this easy to follow setup guide! Can everyone login with the same user simultaneously or do I have to make separate user accounts for each user (the NAS is only going to be used by my family so I don't need the feature to lock out individual users or different permissions).
@TechworksOnline Жыл бұрын
You can have as many connections as you would like with the same account. Also, check this out if you have TrueNas Scale kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpfcfH6po6qCr8Usi=MxjeOh-uAtW-jsUh It enables webUI for the shares, making it easy for family that are no tech savvy

Doesn't work for me no idea. Shares work then don't. Change password. change permissions still not working. Windows asks for password regardless of disabling it or not. Something is screwed somewhere.

Quick question. For users or other groups not included in the permissions sections, is there a way to make the non-accessible folder not viewable when accessing ip in Windows Explorer?
@TechworksOnline Жыл бұрын
Yes, in the Share settings uncheck the "Browsable to network Clients" option. The "purpose" Field must be set to an SMB option to have that selectable and NOT set to "Default share parameters"

Server Message Block is adopted by Windows OS, but it's not Windows file sharing. IBM created Server Message Block for IBM mainframes long before little ole' Windows came along in the mid-1990s.

@Catalyph11 ай бұрын
Yes. Go to the console. (Keyboard and monitor) and select the option to reset truenas
@acemcgillicutty44207 күн бұрын
Followed step by step. Entered ip address. Can see the shared folder. Click on it, put in set password - Get "Access is denied". Guess I'll delete everything and try again. The only difference is I already have a dataset I want to copy off the nas so I don't have the setting you have when you added the data set and I can't find those settings to modify my current one.
@TechworksOnline7 күн бұрын
You might have a newer version that needs a different user access in truenas to the dataset.. I think it is the app user.

Nice tutorial. However, was the presenter / narrator even aware that by selecting Server Message Block type of share, his case sensitivity selection changed automatically to INSENSITIVE, after he talked so much about selecting it to be SENSITIVE case? Does he know???
@TechworksOnline Жыл бұрын
SMB is case sensitive. Dont mistake SMB with SAMBA which is case insensitive. Not sure if TrueNAS cares and changes the selection or not.
@richardbennett4365 Жыл бұрын
@@TechworksOnline, I appreciate your answering back, but did you see your video at that timestamp to know what I'm observing?
@richardbennett4365 Жыл бұрын
The "case insensitive" setting in Samba is only useful if the client supports case insensitive filename lookups. Windows does not, and it will have trouble if you have two files with the same name but a different case. Clients that do support case insensitivity include the SMB support in the Linux kernel and Samba's own "smbclient".

I don't understand why the man kept going when he selected Raidz1, and it told him the total available storage was 16 GB. He selected 4 8-TB disks, so he should have more than 16 TB storage. That sounds like a mirror configuration. 8*4/2 = 16.
@TechworksOnline Жыл бұрын
Each disk also requires 2GB swap. So another 8GB. When a typical disk you are adding is actually like 2TB disks, you won't notice the 2GB missing hehe.

What a ball-ache! Why does setting up an appliance OS have to be so darn opaque? What's the quote? "You had one job." Having installed TrueNAS as a VM on my ESXi server to test it out (yes, I'm fairly computer savvy) I couldn't work out how to get it to do it's most basic task... the usual frustrating look though on-line documentation and forum posts later and I'm non-the-wiser. So I followed this excellent video to the letter and... "You do not have permission to access..." I guess TrueNAS isn't for me.* *Bye, bye TrueNAS VM. I didn't know you long and you sharn't be missed. Back to my previous solution: A dietpi VM running CASAOS with some direct editing of config files and Docker running on top - Oh how I detest all forms of Linux and it's nonsense.
@TechworksOnline Жыл бұрын
If you get you do not have permission then you will want to make sure you use an Account that was created with the samba share option selected in the user settings (not admin user) and then make sure the permissions for that folder within TrueNAS allow that user or the users group to have access,

What??? His boot 👢🥾 disk is 5 times larger than his data storage disk? Gosh! He won't be able to store very much on this network attached storage server. It would be more usual to see four 8 TEBIBYTE devices, not four that are 1000 times smaller. 😮
