Translation of the Māori Lyrics for you two fab gents: "A war party, a war party! Footsteps pound the sacred warpath Many heads are sought Many slaves are sought This is the work of Tūmatauenga. Behold The chisel of Mataora2 The strong back The base of the spine The buttock spirals The thigh The war belt The tattooed bodies of warriors These are the omens of war. A mighty battle to avenge us Our ancestors gather to assist us Our priests prepare the incantations This is the work of Tūmatauenga. Behold The chisel of Mataora The strong back The base of the spine The buttock spirals The thigh The war belt The tattooed bodies of warriors These are the omens of war. Of Tūmatauenga This is the work of Tūmatauenga. The cry of guns, the blows of the taiaha The sweet flesh of our enemies The ovens fill our bellies with revenge This is the work of Tūmatauenga. Behold The chisel of Mataora The strong back The base of the spine The buttock spirals The thigh The war belt The tattooed bodies of warriors These are the omens of war. Footsteps pound the sacred warpath Footsteps pound the sacred warpath Footsteps pound the sacred warpath Footsteps pound the sacred warpath."

This is essentially sepultura fused with Metallica. And rich it's pronounced Mowrie haha. And to do with the live part you mentioned. They opened a festival in Sydney a few years ago as teenagers and they slaughtered the crowd and the day peaked with them at 12pm. Incredible young fellas

I don't hear Sepultura or Metallica lol. Maybe Metallica more so, but not Sepultura. I think people just think Sepultura because they added a bunch of native Brazilian influence but they sound nothing alike, not instrumental or vocals.
@jonathanavalos533 жыл бұрын
Yeah these guys are so fucking sick, like a modern day revamped Sepultura. You may have already been filled in, but in case not, yes these kids are from New Zealand, but they are of indigenous descent, Māori to be specific, which is also what this song is sung in. I believe it tells the story of Hongi Hika, a Māori leader who waged a bloody war against his enemies. The album this is off of and their music in general deals a lot with their ancestral history, the persecution of indigenous peoples, etc. It’s super sick of them to share their culture in such an energetic and heavy way! Also these kids are only teenagers which is also insanely impressive. This is also one of their longer songs, but one of their most well received, shame yall didn’t like it too much. It’s very hard metal/rock/nu metal.

The Maori (MAO ((like the chinese dictator) REE) have a long history of warfare and feuding. The tatoos they wear embue them with magical properties. The showing of the tounge is a warning of what their victim will look like after being beheaded and the tounge distends from the mouth. If you should happen to encounter a group of Maori, they may approach you in a hostile manner. You may even get beat up a little. Do not fight back or show any aggression. Just smile back. This is their way of determining your true intentions amd whether you are friend or foe.

It's difficult to connect with a song when you don't understand the background and especially the language so I think the grades are very fair. Sure, they could have researched it more and in so doing, comprehend the message etc but as a "cold opening" reaction, you just have to take it at face value and judge purely on preferences rather than knowledge. And Māori culture is different to western/Anglo American culture - there's gonna be a few missteps in translating the actions and sounds being seen/heard. Give em a little slack. They did their job, they reacted. Ka pai bros (well done guys) :-)

Maybe that's the problem when reacting to something that has quite strong cultural links when you're ignorant of that culture. If you don't know much about it, it can be easy to overstep without realising.
@aryansigrid3 жыл бұрын
@@zerozeeros Being respectful is common sense you don't have to know a language to be aware when you're making comments for pure joke reasons, totally out of context whilst ignoring any sensitivities of our Kiwi culture here in New Zealand. Saying things like, I'm sure they're singing mother-fucker, etc, is pretty disrespectful, whether their small brains heard it or not. The basic problem here is Immaturity & Ignorance. If I were to do a Reaction Video to a band & song from another country & culture I would think twice about every comment I made so as to not tread on peoples cultural beliefs, customs & overall way of life. To boot!

The name of the song translate to people eater. Poking of the tongue is showing the opponent that they are going to eat them when they've been killed. Basically, if you talked smack about someone high up from.a different tribe, the chief and his tribesmen would go and wipe out that village (kill men, women and children) or make them slaves.
