Just for interest, you might notice the heavy vegetation within the fenced areas in the background, exclusion of rabbits and deer is quite profound for nature to return.

Interesting mine. The arch is very reminiscent of the stone work in the north Pennine ore field mines, especially when driving through shale. I find the lack of stopes odd though, a lot of work driving roadways without intersecting any veins…

You should come to the Northern Pennine mines, those stone arches are in practically every one. Most are dressed stone, but we have a video in a few weeks time that shows one that is undressed, just like many of the stones in that one :)

Who manufactured the wire rope that was used in this mine? I know that wire rope was invented by German mining engineer Wilhelm Albert some time between 1831 and 1834. Scotsman Robert Stirling Newall improved the manufacturing process in 1840. John A. Roebling began manufacturing wire rope in the U.S. in 1941. Scotsman Andrew Smith had an early patent on wire rope, but I don't know where and when. The whole history of wire rope is confusing, I haven't been able to quite wrap my head around it all yet to figure the exact timeline of it all. --- I would love to hear Ioan's insights on this subject.

I tried to imagine how such an arch could be constructed without a frame of some kind supporting it until the arch is completed. But you're in a mine. I would love to know how they did that? Amazing skill.

Thank you so very much for this very interesting and informative video presentation, the people are absolutely delighted with the way you record this for future generations to see the work that went into opening these mines up. The stone arch is certainly a masterpiece of engineering and also a thing of great beauty, as well as a way of using waste rock. I take it that the water drains through the collapse to make its escape from the mine?

Any idea what they were mining here? Not sure how far from the original entrance the collapse is, but the government should dig it out and turn that arch in to a national monument. It would attract a ton of tourists if it were easy to reach and drained of water (I imagine it would drain if the entrance were open. Even back then they knew to start the shaft downhill and work up at a slight angle so the water drained).

the miners must've cut the stone that size on purpose for stacking the arch; less work than hauling it out

I have begun wondering how much fresh water these abandoned mines now hold. We are constantly being told how little fresh water is available to certain areas, yet, we have these hidden and forgotten mines that have become storage facilities of huge volumes of water! Is it possible we have an answer to some problems under our feet?

You definitely wouldn’t want to go drinking water out of an abandoned mine especially ones that are full of lead and zink
@Randrew
@Randrew 2 жыл бұрын
@@iaingwynne4675 True. And while Wales is NOT known for its lack of water, old metal mines are an active concern for waterway contamination. And concern for drinking water quality as well, I imagine.
@jeffreyyoung4104
@jeffreyyoung4104 2 жыл бұрын
@@iaingwynne4675 Lead and zinc are natural minerals in the ground, and water does not absorb them unless the water is acidic. Using water from mines is how some communities provided water to the people for over a century, and the lead, zinc, silver, and other heavy metals were never a problem. Many water pipes are galvanized, and they are zinc plated to prevent corrosion. And water pipes were also made from lead, or in the case of copper pipes, soldered with lead. I would worry more about coliform bacteria in the water!
