Truly the End of an Era: OS/2 Warp 4 Installed on the IBM ThinkPad T43

Tivoli originally was an enterprise management package, but in time came to encompass more and more things and more things became "Tivoli this" or "Tivoli that", that clouded what Tivoli was actually supposed to be - an endpoint monitoring and inventory tool. Anyway, this brings back memories. I bought OS/2 2.x for Windows on a special deal from my university when I was an undergrad when it first came out. IBM should have priced it like that for everyone. I then upgraded through to the Warp 3.0 days before moving to NT 3.51 (mainly due to my job). I keep an OS/2 4.52 (whatever it is that you're running here) as a VM for giggles at conferences because it confuses people when they first see my screen on the projector.

I have running T43 with OS/2 4.52 too ! :) The problem of long boot time is caused by dhcp in this case, not the Broadcom driver itself. Using of fixed IP and eliminate the line "dhcpstrt -i lan0" from c:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd will reduce boot time significantly. And there's alternative network driver for T43 which name is 'GenMAC wrapper'. You can drive both Broadcom ethernet and intel wifi (2200 or 2915) on T43 together with GenMAC. IMHO, GenMAC and xwlan are essential for T43 networking :)

Book "Showstopper" occurs as David Cutler brought his VAX/irmx11 team to Microsoft to develop N10 (i860, WinNT). IBM F'd up by insisting on 286 compatibility in Presentation Manager where 286 protected mode was grossly inferior to i386 virtual 8086 mode. After WOW it was obvious IBM chose to tank OS/2. Attempts to win back market share with Warp was way too late.

My best advice is to try different versions of the driver. That may help sometimes.

Just picked up an IBM Thinkpad 570 with an ultradock. It was designed to run Windows 98. I was going do a downgrade to 95 and just use for naitive DOS but now I am tempted to go with OS/2. Good idea for DOS gaming or not? I've got an x60s running Windows 7 for later 9x games as tend to get laptops a generation faster than the games I want to run.

I am only about halfway through at the moment, so apologies if I jump the gun and you work it out too later in the video. Long boots are sometimes indicative of a lot of swapping. How much memory is in that thing? I'd suggest maxing it out. Also some form of solid-state drive IDE emulation might improve things, but the limiting factor on that age of IDE interfaces is the interface itself. I remember working on the Linux kernel on my dual PPro 200 back in the mid 1990's, and there was things you could do to improve performance and free up the CPU through using hdparm to enable UDMA, but I have no idea if OS/2 supported UDMA or not.

2GB of memory. I believe it's the highest spec T43 other than the T43P. In terms of boot times, the Broadcom Ethernet Driver is the root of the long boot times, no big deal but a little annoying. Other than that OS/2 runs extremely well on the T43

Broke my install fixing my video drivers. Oh sweet merciful IBM Kami in the sky all I had to do was a quick format. It let me keep my old table. edit: I am boot looped. Cant get to CD :(

I've had it happen too. Just keep reinstalling eventually it will become easy. Find the drivers is hard enough for some of these computers. I've had to delve to old 90's sites for some of the drivers. It really is an adventure

What's the point of running OS/2? This channel is the first time I've even heard about this OS. I suspect you can't run it as a daily driver. Is it like a hobby thing? Do you actually use these machines on semi daily basis and for what?

Mainly a hobby thing. My main OS right now is Win8.1. I install it because most of the IBM Thinkpads and Aptiva can run it natively which is appealing, plus I think it's better than Win95. OS/2 still technically lives on ARCA OS which can be used as a daily driver. I'm always working on computers, trying to find new software etc.

As a historical reference - I bought and installed OS2 2.1 waaaaay back in '94 before windows 95 or NT were a thing. The main reason was that many folks - like myself - were delving into Linux and multitasking and wanted that true multitasking environment. OS2 has had that from the start. The thought back then of having a terminal window on my PC logged into my university mainframe while simultaneously running word and excel was simply mind boggling - That was what OS/2 offered. In reality - it never really delivered as the Windows compatibility layer never worked very well, and I didn't have enough $$ for the ram and HDD space required. This was in the days of $50-$100/meg of ram and 75-100mhz pre-pentium CPU's..
