Oh my! Until today I had safely decided that understanding the different scales was beyond the ability of my little brain. I had watched your previous video of “modes” but somehow your extremely clear use of showing us the different modes on top of a Gm scale clicked. Learning is fun and great teachers like you deserve credit for making the seemingly complex very understandable. Sorry for all the words. I just want to say “thank you.” 😌🙏

The other day I was going back and forth between E major & D major thinking I was in the key of A when I realized the A-1,4,5 is the same as E blues. Chord progression was E & D major starting with the E major pentatonic scale (C# minor) then hitting the E minor pentatonic scale. The heavens opened up.

I am only half way through this video and I rarely feel the need to post anything to YT ... however, with this vid Mr Stich has really hit a great mix from explanation to visuals to ‘edited’ adding of loops and immediate implementation . Ref Sweet Home , thoroughly recommend al kooper’s ‘Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards’ where he references the recording of Sweet Home and specifically it’s key which Ed King stated was in G because the song ends on a G and as it ends there then it must be the root, according to Ed (according to Al). Al Kooper with a little more music theory behind him felt it was in D with the song ending on the 4th G. ref page 192-3 of Al’s book.
@StichMethodGuitar4 жыл бұрын
I hear ya, but there are two definitions of key in the musical world, one meaning landing chord, which really does nothing for you and the other... key indicating what Major Scale the chords come from... (Ed King’s) mindset.... the right one😬😂

I watched your other lessons about the mode many times and practiced them but this one was really even more brillant because without moving position everything changes. Super clear. I have one question left to rule them all : So, to play in a certain mode, the chord progression must start on the same note. Here for instance, in key of G for the Dorian start with a A chord (which makes it a Dorian progression if I get it right) and when we play the notes we insist on the A of the G scale. But, can we still insist on the A note of the G scale if the progression is a G major ? ( I am pretty sure we can, but what does that change ?)
@StichMethodGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Not really, if the progression is G Major the G note is going to have a massive gravity to be home BUT hitting the A once and a while will sound cool, but trying to force the A as home all the time really just won’t come to fruition because the G is home. Did they make sense?

Thanks for sharing the video, it is helpful. I have a question, when soloing with your backing track, let’s say in A minor progression, I know that I need to start in A note, then as chords progress, when should I land on A note again? Is it when you back to A minor chord? Or it doesn’t matter as long as I play G major scale?

So the key (no pun intended) is the starting chord in the progression? Eg when you start your progression with the natural minor, you use the aeolian mode or natural minor mode. And if, say, you introduce a chord into this progression that is outside the key then you tighten up the mode to fewer notes, like a pentatonic?

@StichMethodGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Watch my Althea video. It’s a Grateful Dead song that is in the Dorian mode with chord tones. Let me know what you think l. Also, it’s hard to change scales for each chord unless the song is very slow, or there are a lot of chords not in the key.
@jessemontano63994 жыл бұрын
Ionian : maj,min,min, maj,maj, min, dim7b5. Those are the chords u play in an ionian mode jam..Dorian is: min, min, maj,maj, min, dim7b5, major,..those are the chords u use for a Dorian jam..Pink Floyd does this .. Google chord scales for modes.... It's an amazing thing....I hope this helps bro. Take care. Also, the scale you play over a chord never changes...doesn't matter which chord number you play, the corresponding scale always follows the chords. Always. Hope it makes sense...

Question. If you are playing a progression in the key of G major, lets say G Em C D... now G C and D are major in the progression. Does that mean over the C chord I can play the standard C major Scale or should I be playing the C Lydian scale? Since C is the fourth interval I assume I should play the Lydian but some say you can play the Major scale whenever a major chord shows up but the C Major scale will have different notes than the C Lydian. which is correct? Thanks
@jaydreb4 жыл бұрын
WyZe There are no hard rules but generally you would play C Lydian in the example you give. Changing to C Major/Ionian will introduce an F natural note which may sound off depending on the other chords in the progression. If you’re confused you can safely play C Major Pentatonic over the C major chord as this scale removes the modal notes.

@charliejenkins1004 жыл бұрын
Your last line itself holds the answer bro. Forget the positions or scale shapes. They are just instruments to help you visualize the notes over the fretboard. Scale degrees. That's the key. Just remember, focusing on different scale degrees over corresponding progressions changes the sound and feel. Doesn't matter which scale shape or position you use. Think in terms of notes or scale degrees, not scale shapes or positions. For example, concentrating on the D in the G scale and treating it as home, over a suitable chord progression (or even a constant D drone) will make the Dmixolydian sound, or simply focusing on E gives you the E natural minor or Aeolian sound. Hope this helps..
