Finally, after watching toooooooooo many youtube videos, at last, I find a guitarist who explains clearly and demystifies modes. You are in a class alone.

This is so timely. Yesterday I was sitting in a cafe and they were playing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky". I've been working on your Patreon chord tone exercises and this sounded like a really cool progression to jam to so I I took a quick look online: it's in B Dorian with the progression Bm7, D, F#m7, E. When I got home I made a quick loop and started soloing with notes from the Amaj scale starting on the B. As I started to explore this scale on different parts of the neck, I found myself swapping between B Dorian and Bm pentatonic. Then I started trying to hit chord tones at the appropriate times. An hour later I emerged from what was almost a guitar trance. It sounded .... so .... good.

I was completely illiterate music theory wise until i found your videos a few years back Ian. Your lessons changed my life! I was trying to solo over an Em to A progression and noticed that the 6th didnt sound right unless it was sharp. After googling I figured out it was the dorian mode. After scratching my head for another hour I found this video which explained everything I need to know. Thank you so much! Ps - have you listened to any Michael Schenker before? The chord progression I mentioned is from UFOs Space Child. Amazing solo to check out if you havent already. Thanks again!

Great explanation! I'd like to add another way of thinking about Dorian which really helped me a lot. I like to relate the modes to either the major or minor scales. So when I think Dorian I think minor scale BUT with a major 6th. That's just one note different and that simplifies it for my underdeveloped brain. But the main reason why I think this is useful is because I (like most people) like to play out of the minor pentatonic a lot. So all I need to do is figure out where that major 6th falls inside my pentatonic shapes and Bob's your uncle, I'm playing in the Dorian mode. I tend to think of chord tones to target too which you mentioned but sometimes I like to rock the pentatonic and just add a flavor note like the 6th to spice it up. Hope that's a helpful alternative way to wrap your head around modes in general.

Mr Stitch: I want you to know how much I appreciate your efforts. I teach golf and watching you teach guitar (which I love) has helped me teach my craft. Your passion for what you do and the love you project in teaching guitar has helped me translate and speak better to my students. I found you one day while searching for a way to jam better to Phish and Jerry Garcia. I have studied and tried to copy for my own enjoyment at home for years how these two played and your simple language and communication style have helped me understand and connect those dots I was missing for years. I live In Florida also down in Charlotte County and if we ever cross paths I would love to buy you a pint and say thanks in person. til then ill do what I can to donate and buy your things provided that I can afford from your downloads and such. Have a blessed day and know that people like me can really really appreciate what style of teaching you bring to the table! so so much love. FGI

Thank you so much for explaining the modal system in the clearest most concise way I've ever seen it done by any guitar teacher!! I've spent years trying to get a proper handle on the Dorian mode and in the process I came to it from a different direction. I wrote a couple of instrumental guitar jam songs and soloed over the progressions using the chord tones of each chord to form arpeggios. In the key of D Dorian, I'd go up the ladder in the Dm chord tones, and down the ladder using the E major chord tones, often beginning on the sus4 tone of the E major to get the ball rolling. But that became boring, so I'd switch between the chord tones and the scale tones of the underlying chords in a two chord improv. I dunno if I'm making any sense here, but what I'm trying to say is that even though I have no formal music theory training and am entirely self-taught, right from my earliest beginnings as a guitarist, I still got to where your explanations on this video are leading. If I'd had this video for a reference back in 1973, think of all the time I coulda saved!!🙂

It's good that you reinforce the proper way of thinking (Dorian is the second mode, asking ok X is second note of which major scale.) I'm lazy so I just jam in the parent major scale using the major scale patterns, I haven't learned the 'modal' patterns yet so much. You're definitely in the top teachers on KZbin and I hope you drown in subscribers eventually.

Oye Como Va is one of the most Dorian songs I personally know. The Am7-D7 chord progression is solidly Dorian-the third of the D7 chord is the #6 of the A-Dorian scale (i.e. the F#), so it captures that “Dorian flavor."

Reine H idk enough of his stuff to know, honestly. I only know that song because-if memory serves-Stitch covered it once before. It was only in playing around with it that I realized the ii-V chord progression plays up that sharp-6 in the Dorian scale, giving us that flavor.

Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath is that same Em-D Vamp pretty much though the whole song. The end solo uses E Dorian pretty heavily for that cool jazzy sound. I'm sure there are some straight pentatonic lines in there too but you can definitely "feel the Dorian" I remember that being the first time I heard a "jazz" sounding solo that I liked.

For the main corresponding chords for Dorian, should it be the minor 1st and Major 4th? The Characteristic Chord Combinations Modal chord progressions almost always contain what is known as the characteristic chord combination. This is a combination of 2 distinct chords (one of which you are dictating as your tonal center) that lets you know for certain that it is, in fact, a modal progression. Dorian: i - IV
