The way Burton is still kneeling in the dark as Zero Signal ends and Self Bias Resistor begins. It's as if he's trying to compose himself still from the emotional numb ending of the previous song. He walks off stage, finds himself, and he erupts into the upbeat spunk that's required for that specific vocal delivery. Also it takes balls to put yourself vulnerable out there like that. These are amazing people that do this for us.

Burton is a unique individual who is dedicated to his craft. You can easily tell when someone is clearly in it for the money. Burton poured his heart and soul into each song, even when he didn't have the energy or his voice was shot or when he was sick. He still persisted and maneuvered his way through these tough songs. These songs are truly hard to sing. Seriously. Burton and I have a simular Vocal pattern and speech pattern. And I sort of sound like him but my voice is a little deeper. Anyway, long story short, it's truly hard to sing Fear Factory songs. Even Replica for Crying out loud. Lol. I respect him a lot for getting through each show with all of the touring they did.

I had the pleasure of making music with Ray back in 1990. He was already in FF, but had some down time and said he could help our band get started before going on tour. I still have a cassette recording of us jamming, even messing around with some Cure. A month into it , he said his goodbyes and wished us luck. It was a pleasure. Yeah, his growling technique is very inefficient, even though it sounds so brutal. Modern vocalists use techniques that are 90% as powerful but put very little pressure on the vocal chords, not much more than speaking. Devin Townsend and Tatiana from Jinjer can growl all they want then hit high notes no problem, the trick is that they aren't asspounding their vocal chords. Burton's style is more like Pantera vocals, but Phil didn't need to sing afterwards :P
@Exgrmbl4 жыл бұрын

I´ve witnessed them during that tour in Cologne, Germany. BUT! Let´s not forget about John Bechdel! The guy behind the keyboard on stage has had an important role during FFs most succsessful years in the 90s. While he was not the one who created the electronic landscape on their records (like Rhys Fulber did in the studio), he was on stage triggering all the short samples, loops and playing the melodic synths live. And FF probably didn´t even play to a click track at all. Just like what he´s been doing with Ministry since over a decade now. Back then it was a common method of utilizing a "machinist" for that purpose. This got somehow lost due to click tracks, in-ear, backing tracks and automation (which is not a crime to do imho). This guy has been with bands like Killing Joke, Prong, FF and Ministry and is imho one of the underrated and least recognized musicians in the whole "industrialized" music genres. Thumbs up for the upload and thumbs up for John Bechdel. If you get the chance, stream and buy the brilliant documentary about him which is titled "Killing the Joke: The John Bechdel Story".
