When I was young, I followed the harvest in Canada started out picking tobacco, then went to Apples and potatoes. After that lived in the bunk houses with Jamaicans and Mexicans. I was 17 years old. I'm an activist and part of the Community Farmworker Alliance, an initiative by the CIW, the Coalition of Immokolee Workers, who struck for better piece rates and safer working conditions in the tomato plantations of Florida (IR: the tomato plantations that source tomatoes for almost all of the fast food chains). I also went to work as a farm hand a while back, to better understand what the working conditions are like. Trust me, farm work, especially the rush during harvest time, is very brutal and rigorous! And I was only farming on a small nonprofit farm on two acres! Americans, and especially MAGA, you folks have NO IDEA what it is like to be a farm worker. Literally no idea.

Amongst others: Meat-processing plants Which will depress demand for cattle, pigs, poultry etc. via reduced per-head prices Hospitality Janitorial Domestic workers (maids, housekeepers, nannies) Construction, home renovations and repairs Houses in the midst of construction, re-roofing etc. are likely going to be halted in their current states or greatly delayed as many workers flee or simply refuse to show up. Larger commercial and industrial projects are likely to experience impacts as well, but I expect less so than residential ones. Consequences for one’s actions. The same happened in the UK after Brexit. No seasonal pickers were allowed into the UK and crops rotted in the fields. Its changed the crops many farms grow and we now import more food than we did before Brexit and people still think we have taken back control. Wait until eggs are $8 per egg rather than a dozen then you will regret what has been done.

If we enforced labor laws fairly, we would have fair priced foods, and people working for fair wages. Neither side gets this. Iphones could be made in the U.S., and priced at $400. The difference would be that Apple would have a 100 billion dollar market cap instead of a 2 trillion dollar market cap. I'm ok with that.
