I was a decidedly non-Trump supporter back in 2015-2016 when he first started running. I thought he was silly at best and incompetent at worst, and never thought he would actually win. My in-laws are all republicans and I watched them all, one by one, become Trumpers. Once I saw the horrific and unconscionable child separations and incarcerations I knew I could never support this man, not that I was planning on it anyway. But little by little, I lost respect for my in-laws that continued to defend this cruel man and his indefensible policies.

It is time for a new approach. I don't feel like most people are concerned about people wanting to come to America but if they want to be here so badly then show it. Learn OUR language and customers, stop trying to turn America into little Puerto Rico or Mexico 2.0. I'm sick and tired of TV commercials being ALL Spanish, I don't care if they add Hispanic subtitles or have both languages but gosh dang it WHY. I get mail that's all Spanish, email in all Spanish, I'm fucking over it. The very least you could do is learn the native language. My great grand parents were immigrants from Italy, they spoke Italian at home, their children ( my grandparents) learned English in school. They NEVER spoke Italian outside of the home because they were AMERICAN citizens. That's the problem, the people that come here now, they don't respect their new home enough
@annunciataparchesi1832Сағат бұрын
Did they stop speaking Italian outside the home because they wanted to, or because bigots harassed them when they did? My mother was punished for speaking Italian in school, even on the playground. That's not something to be proud of or something we want to pass on to another group. Spanish is as American as English or any other language we speak here. Why aren't we all speaking Dutch in New York or demanding everyone in Texas speak Spanish? Why aren't you speaking Ojibwe? Have you ever tried to have a real conversation in another language? Do you think if you went to a Spanish speaking country they'd shame you for speaking English in the streets?
@AnthonyCuozzo-dd4yj34 минут бұрын
@mszoomy: as an Italian American, I am amazed and embarrassed by your attitude. My parents were punished and belittled for speaking Italian in school and mocked for speaking it outside school. We aren't talking about just language here. Do you REALLY think Spanish speaking people, even US citizens (and by the way Puerto Rico is part of the US and they ARE citizens - whether you like it or not) should be detained by ICE because they look and sound different? Seriously? As someone who can resemble several unpopular ethnic groups, and depending on whatever the US crisis of the day was - especially post 9/11, I was repeatedly stopped, my briefcase searched and had insults hurled at me. Frightening. So get over yourself and the fact you think everyone should speak only English. And I have never seen TV commercials all in Spanish, at least here in the Northeast. A little compassion wouldn't hurt - this is bigger than just language. And as to your comments about "learning our customers" - I think you meant customs, why should they abandon their heritage? Did your family abandon their Italian customs just to show they are Americans? No one needs to justify anything to you - these people work, pay taxes etc.. so what's the big deal? Maybe you should open your mind and learn something about another, different culture. There's room for more than one culture and language here. At least there was until tRump won his second term...
