We may have praised North Korea to the skies, legitimized a brutal dictator in the eyes of the world, and promised to stop our army's practice strikes in the country all to reward Kim Jong Un for agreeing to meet with us, even though that is something he wanted to do anyway, but we didn't also lift sanctions on the country, so obviously the deal is much better than the one we made with Iran.

I also find it worth noting that Trump described the military exercises as "provocative" and "war games", seemingly legitimizing North Korea's take on the drills rather than the more neutral tone which the US has traditionally adhered to. But Trump's language always seems to favor dictators while deriding our previously held standards and allies. As relations with Kim are strengthened our ties to Canada are strained, not only with tariffs, but with personal attacks aimed at their Prime Minister. In fact, the bonds we've formed with many of our closest allies are being worn away with broken deals and mean spirited Tweets. Meanwhile, Trump lashes out more vehemently at American citizens who get on his bad side than murderers who have literally threatened the United States. Celebrities and football players are painted in a harsher light than genuine criminals, both at home and abroad. The reversal is astonishing, especially since his supporters seem to be in favor of this confounding behavior. That America would walk hand in hand with brutal regimes to the cheers of its people is profoundly disturbing.

For those wondering what Trump should have said, you can indicate a certain amount of respect and pleasantry without fully committing to licking ass. Something more neutral where he doesn't keep heaping the praise. Give a small compliment, maneuver (with words) out of questions about what Kim Jong Un has done domestically. This is a place where it pays to be diplomatic. Also it's strange that people voted on him for "telling it like it is", don't mind him heaping praise on a dictator they were happy to see him insult before?
