There was a press conference yesterday, where the Greenlandic and Danish PM's said that Denmark is going to invest more in the Greenlandic infrastructure, and Greenland will be invited more to sit at the table when Arctic and other important matters are discussed. The Greenlandic PM said that > “Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic .. We have a desire for independence, a desire to be the master of our own house, this is something everyone should respect. But that doesn’t mean we are cutting all ties, all cooperation and all relations with Denmark,” He also mentioned the heritage and cultural ties with Denmark and that Greenland agree more with Denmark than they disagree with. We should not forget that a large part of the Inuit population also have Danish ancestry, so it's kind of a mixed culture.

@@freespiritable As it is now, there are 30 areas where Greenland could rule on their own but cannot afford to whiteout Denmark paying for it, like something as simple as having their own police and prison system. As it is, 60% of the Greenlandic government budget and spending's, including their new luxurious prison in Nuuk and expensive infrastructure, free health care, free day care, paid sick leave, 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave, free University college and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU that is a subsidy by the Danish Government. According to both the Danish PM and the Greenlandic PM, the discussion is not about Greenland cutting their ties to Denmark, but getting more independence, in they sense that they want to go from being more of a territory ruled by Denmark, to a real independent country within the realm of a United Kingdom of Denmark. With this small a population, Greenland would never be more than a territory under a US wing, so this goes against everything the Greenlandic people want. In any case, Denmark is subsidizing them with around $12,000 per citizen, while the state that receives highest funding from US fed gov is Alaska at $8,000 per citizen which is very high compared to other states, and again, Greenland would only be considered a territory and not a state. But it's crystal clear that this is never going to happen. The Greenlandic PM just want to make sure that Trump understand and respect this, and he will grant the USA the rights to patrol the waters as much as they want, and build a base more if they want, which is actually old news, because this possibility has already been agreed upon by the USA, Denmark and Greenland.

But, the supposed leader of free world making fun of the same order that maintains its leadership. That's dumb. Im panamenian and I can surely say that the canal is not managed in any way by the Chinese. That's a lie he has been making for distraction and also it has been creating confrontations between Panamanians and American maga followers here. The Panama Canal is managed by the ACP ( Panama Canal Authority ); most employers are panamenian. Lastly, since his first comment on taking back the canal, which was done after December 20 ( a national morning day for panamenians because on dic 20,1989 we had the US invasion and several panamenian civilians died and others disappeared), trump made this comment. It's like Irak saying they will invade and take NY on September 12, a day after a national morning day for Americans. Because we have a complicated relationship with the US we even have in school a subject called " relaciones de Panama con estados unidos " (Panamanian and USA relations ). All because of the events since the canal construction and the several historical events between americans and panamenians during the 20th century. To put things into perspective, for many decades the USA not only had military bases in Panama but schools, hospitals, and a full city with USA laws and no panamenian could cross that part of Panama because it was like a colony on Panamanian soil under US control. And because of this exact reason, we have morning days like January 9 (Martyrs Day) because, on that day in 1964, there was a full riot between panamenian high school students and US Balboa high school students. After all, the panamenian teens wanted to put the panamenian flag next to the American one. 4 students died and the panamenian flag with the fight was shattered. I'm sure Trump is doing such rants as a distraction from the actual issues he is facing in this term. I wish people were curious enough to search for the details when it comes to the Panama Canal and not just speculations Trump and his congressmen have been doing

Trump doesn't care about history. What he does care about is a potential conflict with China, and how economical interest might aid block building in such a case. As the Ukraine war shows, most countries that are not directly affected by the war will still side with their own economic interests, regardless of who the agressor is. Again, ignoring that in the international game of poker, where everyone is cheating, ignore what your opponents say, and instead focus upon what they do. If i were Zelensky, I'd be writing proposals that include building a 200 foot statue of trump in downtown Kyiv and a 100 story trump tower in exchange for unfettered access to the entire US military conventional weapons inventory. Its just a thought.

Zelensky understands what his discussions with Trump were to be serious, from Notre Dame, and to be honest I think Zelensky is the only person who should actually seriously worry about Trump committing to the discussion he had with Zelensky. I say "worry", only because everything is fun and games until you get to office. Zelensky is likely prepared to go on without Trump, but Zelensky has seemingly negotiated with Trump quite well to have Trump back him. We will simply have to see if it comes to fruition come 9 days from now.

@@Eric-sy1xu Check the news. Trump has walked back his ending the conflict in a day promise. Now it's 100 days. So much for his chest beating that the bloodshed had to stop immediately. Almost for sure Ukraine will not get US aid in those 100 days, which would favour Russia very strongly. I suspect that Zelensky's efforts were in vain and Trump is planning to throw Ukraine under the bus no matter what.

Not sure where else to put this ... Vlad, thank you for all you do with educating others on Geopolitics and philosophy. I have learned so much from watching and following you. It is always fascinating and interesting to hear your perspective and knowledge on the subject. However, I now am trying to seek advice on how to disengage. Ive become so wrapped up in these issues, Russia's invasion, NATO, China, the future of Europe, the path the US, my home is going, etc, and its consumed me. Ive always been interested in history and geopolitics but now I just want to stop thinking about it. The war in Ukraine made me believe that incredibly important history, like what i read about in decades past, was unfolding before my very eyes, and that I could somehow take part. But I cant. Ive read so many things, stayed up late watching air raid maps, listened to people like you and Tim Snyder, made donations, tried to talk with and educate others, and a myriad of other things. But it doesn't matter. The wheels of the world will continue to turn, no matter what we wish for. The truth I've been struggling to accept is that the world will always be ruled by murderers, rapists, thieves, liars, and con-men. The powers that be are either too weak, too divided, or too compromised to effectively counter brutal dictators like Putin. I can't change that, I can't even move the needle on that, and its maddening. I don't have the connections, experience, or job situation to go over and volunteer. I dont have adequate funds to make a real difference. And I can't even change people's minds by a small margin. No matter how much I read I cannot improve my social IQ or my argumentation skills. It feels as though everything i have learned has been utterly useless. I wonder if I tried to explain to someone why the earth is round, whether they would walk away believing it is flat. I know this isn't your problem, but I want to know your thoughts on what people like me should do. I want to stop caring, I want to stop thinking about it, I wish I could forget any of this ever happened. But I can't. Is it right for some of us to embrace being "apolitical" or apathetic, like you often discuss with Russia's population, if our vote has already been cast and there is nothing more we can do?

My intuition is kind of strange in this case. Trump being ao childish, reminds me of my puberty. We used to compare penis sizes. I remember the wish of having the biggest one. I can see Trump looking at the map and seeing how big Russia is, and wanting america to be bigger. With Canada and Greenland (Which I suspect he doesn't know much about), the US would be of similar size... It's too childish and silly, it couldn't be... Right?

There is. Trump is realist. He understands people like Putin because he's cut of the same cloth. Trumps rhetoric is probably his idea to dabble a bit in imperialism himself. I just doubt it can work. Panama is a bit too far away for the U.S. to create facts too fast for the international community to react. And while aquiring Greenland would somewhat extend the American resource base, a lot of it is in easy middle distance rocket reach from Russia. So even if Trump could bully the world into compliance somehow, I doubt he gains what he expects out of it.
@Stikkelsbær15 күн бұрын
Given what you say here about words being action, when spoken by political leaders, the recent public statements on this matter by the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador strike closer to the heart of how many Canadians feel on this issue. Dr. Andrew Furey noted that Canadians value their sovereignty and that sovereignty is paid for in 'blood'. This strikes a far more serious tone than we have heard from Canadians so far. Canada has a latent nationalism constructed around sacrifices made in WW1 that often disturbs international visitors and immigrants when they are exposed to Remembrance Day celebrations, particularly in rural regions. Trump may awaken that sleeping latent side. In the 1950s there was talk of Canada acquiring nuclear weapons, before the post-war consensus fully settled in. Recently, there has been talk in conservative circles here of instituting a national service. I didn't think the idea had any chance here until the last week or so.

The EU should break up with the USA economically and diplomatically. Then create a separate mutual defence agreement outside of NATO with Canada, Panama, and Mexico to deter Trump from invading. Ramp up military spending and if Trump does invade any of those places then the EU needs to treat that like Hitlers invasion of Poland and declare war on the USA. The USA stopped fascist imperialism in Europe and now it is their turn to stop fascist imperialism here.

Apparently the US already had to pressure Denmark once to prevent Greenlanders from selling out to China. Denmark was effectively gifted Greenland in 1933 but lets it sit unprotected and undeveloped. Granting it independence would be even worse if that means that 56K people get to decide about a huge area of land that they cannot possibly control. Threatening an invasion isn't helpful, but Denmark, Greenland and the US should get together and come up with a plan.
