I’m a 62 year young divorced woman. I taught in the US for 17 and was forced out of my position because I had standards and held kids accountable. I went and worked teaching internationally for 8 years, where my insurance was covered by my employer. In 2021 after the death of my mother I quit my job and returned to the US to be the caregiver for my father. I am recipient of ACA, which covers me since I am too young to receive my pension and too young for Social Security. Without ACA I would have NO medical coverage and would be paying out of pocket for routine exams. I am EVER so grateful that this program exists! NO ONE SHOULD EVER BE WITHOUT MEDICAL INSURANCE nor should they go bankrupt because of medical expenses! THIS SHOULD BE THE RIGHT OF ALL PERSONS!

One of my husband’s medications costs $45,000 every four weeks. Before he was old enough for Medicare, his private insurance said I had to pay for this “experimental” medication. I paid $585,000 to keep him alive for the year before Medicare. BTW our son was hospitalized for two months during this time (before ACA). Because he had just changed jobs & wasn’t invested in the company’s health plan, I paid those bills also. It required every dime I had. I was extremely lucky: not many women have the $1.5 million I needed for my loved ones’ lives. Every family has a similar story. Leigh, I always enjoy your clear and concise explanations of issues. Here's an interesting story: Some years before the ACA was passed I got a job at an electronics company and I befriended a woman who worked as an assembler there. I was surprised to find she lived in a rural area about 63 miles from the company. I asked her why she would drive so far for a job that pays less than $12.00 an hour. It turned out she and her husband were empty nesters who were fairly well off but too young to qualify for Medicare and she was working there for the health insurance. At that time it was cheaper for her to work at a company and get on their group health insurance plan than to try and get insurance on their own. I imagine that once she qualified for Medicare she quit, but if the ACA was repealed I can imagine many people in similar situations working just to get health insurance because it would either be too expensive or they wouldn't qualify otherwise.

why should we get healthcare from an insurance middleman?
@stephenspackman55732 ай бұрын
The insurance component itself is essential because, as with natural disasters, nobody _intends_ to get sick. Ideally the government would fulfil that function directly since (a) it has access to the largest pool of users (meaning that it can provide the most efficient insurance) and (b) it is answerable to those same users rather than to shareholders. But Americans-and most particularly, Republicans-are insane and often refuse to receive services from the government, even though that is literally the point of having a government. So … we're left with private insurance companies. And in that world, getting insurance from a regulated middleman is vastly better for the insured than getting it from an unregulated one, given that they are _legally obliged_ to maximise profits for shareholders.
@stephenspackman55732 ай бұрын
@TheMarcosvolta Except that it's for-profit and the profits-patient costs that otherwise would not even exist-go to the shareholders.

The ACA allowed me to have coverage such as allowing me to go to the ER after a serious injury. Without it I would have been denied insurance because my doctor put on my chart that I had COPD,which I didn't. He corrected his erroe, but it was briefly on my chart so I was labeled uninsurable.

I'm sorry to hear about your health and the insurance worries you have. I'm also in the same situation. Millions of our fellow Americans are blindly ignorant or uncaring of what dire consequences would result from repealing the ACA.

Oh god. Health insurance is very important for me to have now because I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis just last year in June 2023. I am scared that if Trump wins and successfully kills Obamacare, I'm going to be impacted in very negative way. This is the reason I voted for Harris because I don't trust Trump and the Republicans on what they're going to do with health insurance!

I got free insurance because of the ACA. I was poor and nearly homeless. It was a life saver. I'm much better now. Still broke, but not BROKE, lol. I have an apartment and a loving husband, and I would say we're pretty comfortable. The ACA saved my life figuratively, because I was able to get life saving preventative care for free, and it saved my 70 year old mother's life literally. Her medications are free, or nearly free. She has Lupus and Fibromyalgia, and she lives on Social Security. If Trump is elected, my mother will literally die on the streets. _Please..._ for the parents and grandparents that we love... be on the right side of history and vote for Kamala Harris. For our Moms, our daughters, granddaughters, sisters, aunts, and nieces. 💙💙💙💙
