President Trump suggested that Europe should buy US oil and gas to address trade deficits and strengthen alliances. I have a few qualms with this.

I used to watch his videos every day, thinking he knew what he was talking about because of his confidence. Gradually, I realized that his analysis is based on doubling down rather than having the humility to learn from his mistakes. No one can always be right, but this guy is seldom right. I also noticed he removed many of his videos where his predictions were so off that he looks foolish. I clicked on his video to read the comments, and lo and behold, more and more people have started realizing that this person speaks with confidence but lacks substance.

You are forgetting an important thing in relation to Europe's energy needs and its solution: Renewable energy is playing a bigger and bigger role in Europe, and in some countries the electricity production is covered by between 50-80% and still increasing. In other words, if Europe continues that expansion, the need for American oil/gas will become less and less.

This is correct. And as Trump is an extremely unreliable person, why would any country willingly enter into long term supply contracts/infrastructure to further enable is own personal agenda? Canada and Mexico (just) signed an update to NAFTA that Trump already appears to want to repudiate. Europe can't and won't seriously entertain wholesale changes to their individual energy policies in order to pacify Trump. It just can't happen.

Given that he clearly never expected to win in 2016 and was subsequently a deer in the headlights - I think he hadn't had any time whatsoever to consider appointments and postings especially as he had no hands-on experience in that area and they say Washington is wildly different to New York in terms of how you assess someone coming to be your friend all of a sudden. This time around I'd envisage he's quite a bit differently prepared and that they will hit the ground running with actual plans and agendas completely unlike the first term; there will a LOT of shock and upheaval from that, I actually think you might see immense civil service strikes and industrial action in the first instance. How that's going to end up going - it's REALLY hard to say. You're witnessing the end of the former Establishment Epoch so all the rhetoric, allegiance statements, alignment displays and belief compliance will suddenly not only be completely worthless but could actually be a giant negative for anyone continuing with it; when fashion politics is the order of the day then one has to be ready for the fashion to change awfully quickly and overnight lets they be swept away by it. Trump is the tip of the spear of the new epoch but whether he's also the cornerstone it's hard to say - I'd wager he may not be longer term, who that will be is REALLY hard to say. We just need you lot to sort that out chop chop because we over in the UK are going to be copying your homework rather furiously as we have absolutely ZERO direction whatsoever here.

Interesting thoughts from across the pond. I hope Trump doesn't threaten a UK invasion....I really like the Brits. But seriously, you are right, very difficult to say how this Trump v2.0 will pan out....my guess? In a word, "short-lived"....he's in mental decline, accelerated by the emboldenment of re-election. His delusions are expanding into, e.g., global conquests. Watch him closely.....if the shrinks are right, his rhetoric will become increasingly unhinged, probably culminating in a serious event requiring hospitalization or possibly institutionalization....that's how these mental issues tend to progress when not treated (and his medication is clearly not working).
@virtualobject

Really useful and well presented argument, and equally thought-provoking as Peter's Video. Would not be surprised if Trump succeeds in decimating the talent in the system that is actually running the country in his vain attempt to shake things up and make his Big impact. It then remains to be seen if what's left of the administration can deliver on realistic objectives, never mind proposed outlandish fantasy policy used to attract his voter demographic. @davocc2405 The crucial factor with Trump that most overlook is his deteriorating mental state. From a shrinks perspective, the prognosis is not good. Totally disagree with your thoughts. Need someone that understands economics. Not lifelong politicians. The U.S. used tariffs, not taxes in the mid late 1800’s to support a much smaller government and minimal people on the hand out. Regarding oil, a majority of oil produced in the U.S. is light. Many refineries cannot use light oil by itself to produce necessary products. This is why the U.S. is importing heavier oil.

Oil and gas is a world market. The Europeans can buy from Middle East, Latin America or whereever. If the US delivers to Europe, the Saudis will sell less and give it to Japan - its just re-routing. Europe is still much more industrialised than the US actually - that explains why they have a positive trade balance despite having no natural resources. They are only less wasteful with energy, since they have to buy it (and they somehow try to save the planet although its useless since the others are consuming more at the same time). For example the average Russian uses 2,5 time more energy than the average German - because the Germans sit it cold houses in the winter and use 1 liter hot water per shower trying to save energy and the Russians regulate the hot temperature in their houses by opening the windows and use 100 liter hot water.

I liked Peter, but started to notice his rather arrogant condescension towards Trump when he discussed his picks a few weeks ago. The look on his face on this thumbnail pretty well says it all. I don't mind someone with his apparent skill sets having opinions, indeed that's his job, but I have not noticed the same attention applied to Biden's quite hapless appointees or his desire to start WW3 before Trump (who was elected to withdraw the relentless support of the MIC/Ukraine) is inaugurated. If I was in California or North Carolina, I would be a bit miffed. To be taken seriously as an analyst, surely you need to apply the same logic to all scenarios irrespective of personal political convictions. I accept that I may have missed his analysis of the Biden administration.

Peter has always been arrogant and condescending about everything. The only prediction he ever got right was Russia invading Ukraine. (But Russia had already invaded Crimea so that wasn't a shock). I used to used to think he was well informed, but over time observed how his greatest skill is simply sounding supremely confident in everything that he says so regular people believe his predictions. His knowledge is a mile wide but only an inch deep on most of the subjects he discusses. His only areas of actual competence are demographics and petroleum. Outside of those areas he should be taken with a grain of salt.

Sucks. I didn't know hippie Zeihan was an anti-Trumper. Guess I'm not gonna listen to him anymore, just like I will no longer watch anything involving Mark Cuban..

He's always hated Trump. He also predicted Trump had no chance of getting re-elected.

Hey Peter, common man,.don't alienate your audience by bashing trump as you have done a few times. Then you mention Obama to soften things up? Silly trick. It is the vibe in your voice. Can't hide that.

Peter, thanks for confirming that we haven’t had any foreign strategy in over 20 years. I totally agree. South America and Africa should be our trading partners.

Read his book. Trump always opens with exaggerated statements to start the negotiations so high that his trade partners wind up being happy to pay the "lower" price, which was twice as high as anyone else would have got for us. Negotiations go much faster that way. Unfortunately for the old establishment that feeds zeihan his information, they won't be taking a cut this time. Their time is over.

I'd like to hear you discuss the geopolitics of fossil fuels in the context of global warming. And also the longer term picture; what happens when the oil and gas gets lots more expensive as recoverable reserves start declining.

Isn’t Peter getting long in the tooth for a man bun and grayish scraggy face fur? But on to important policies, point out Biden’s competent cabinet members who ran the country while insisting the president was sharp as a tack and fit as a fiddle.

@ Dave, I started listening Zeihan many years ago when he was paid big bucks to speak to investors. I buy his books and much of what he says is spot on; some isn’t. As an investor, a man bun is just hard to take seriously and he’s been styling that look since he moved out of Austin.
