I remember learning some about the canal construction in the 60's, but it wasn't much. Told mainly about reasons for it,that the French stared it,and that mosquitos transmitting malaria cause lots of deaths. Once they killed off mosquitos, they had less deaths. That's all I remember.

It was France, not the USA, who did all the planning and the earliest work, on the canal; 50,000+ French workers died during early construction, mostly due to mosquito borne diseases.. The French were obliged to abandon, and later, after anti malarial treatments had become available, the US workers got stuck in. I think over 25000 American workers were killed before it was complete

Actually most of the workers doing the building were Afro- Caribbeans who were impoverished due to a collapse in the sugar market. The US management of the construction body enticed them with promises of high pay and good housing but in reality they chronically underpaid workers through docking pay on spurious grounds, denied compensation for work injuries, and treated the Afro-Caribbeans as a second class race.

Im Panamenian. Its known that china controls two ports in each end of Canal. Those ports are inside whats part of the canal zone. The panamenian government gave 365 acers of land for free. They dont charge them for that. Maybe china does not control the locks.. But in a time of conflict china has a big advantage over U.S troops contoling borh ends on canal zone. And this was a concern of Souther Command. They just needed a Comander in Chef to make the call... Our politicians are some of rhe biggest crooks in Latin America...

One of the funny things in Panama - the day T came to open 'his' hotel and apartment tower it had rained good tropical rain for many hours. The road that passed infront of the tower was submerged and closed. We all laughed imagining all the rich women getting out of their cars into puddles. No doubt they took the limos into the car park level to decant people but even so.. .the tower was refinanced numerous times, was about 5 years late, did not sell enough units etc. What a disaster.

The Panama canal is dying by lack of rain feeding the upper part of the canal and its large and numerous locks. Yes this is strategic to the USA but it does not belong to them. It was some sort of colony and - as many others - property has been returned (decolonization). Trump is complaining about the rising costs of a passage but fact is the costs remain the same but the throughput is reduced so the prices have to go up to make the balance. I have some doubts that this is Trumps real reason. Yes China is investing in lots of places but with mitigated success. When I worked in California in the 90s half of yellow pages books were written in Japanese but since then it is gone.
