I think this is right. In British politics, parties are expected to publish manifestos. This locks them in to specific policy positions. In the US, we don't have manifestos we have party platforms. A platform isn't a set of promises, it's a vision statement and a wish list. It's a set of slogans. It's basically meaningless. Because pols aren't required to talk specific positions, they can't. Because the moment they do, the opposition media will reframe even the most sensible position by its least desirable consequences. The reason project 2025 is tanking the Trump campaign is that Trump's biggest allies decided to publish a 900 page set of very specific proposals. Some of them are wildly unpopular on their face, and most of the others are unpopular once you unpack what they mean. Project 2025 is especially extreme, but it's an illustration of why even well intentioned politicians can't afford to talk about issues during an election.

Media scrutiny in the USA horrible at times. Synopsis here, "A reporter (non partisan, which is impossible since two companies own the majority of all of them.) asks a medium level difficulty question, the candidate offers a word salad of BS, then the reporter asks another question. It would be nice for media agencies to ask follow-up questions. The powers that be, try and maintain a sort of balance between the two parties. They the PTB, want discourse to some degree, and Trump is mentally failing at any sign of coherent speeches.
