Something I haven't heard anyone talk about as far as the impact of tariffs is that it doesn't just make foreign sourced goods more expensive in the country imposing tariffs, it soon makes domestically made goods more expensive too. Domestically manufacturers will quickly realize they can raise their prices to a new threshold that while still under the tariff amount gives them a greatly increased profit margin. The manufacturers benefit but the consumers lose out twice. And then there's the long term effects of tariffs. It makes manufacturers protected behind a tariff wall lazy and uninnovative. While manufacturers outside the tariff wall are forced to become more innovative and efficient in order to remain competitive. Long term result--tariff protected manufacturers can no longer compete on the international stage and their market shrinks to only their national economy.

The US is not self sufficient. It's probably technically possible eventually for the US to be self sufficient using crazy tariffs. But it would take decades, and the cost of living increase would be huge, like ridiculously huge. ie a short 2 hr flight in a plane would cost $1000s. Avocados would be $10 each. Eggs $5 each. The EU has been using trade sanctions and targeted agricultural regulations as ways to prevent the United States from being able to export agricultural goods to Europe for years. They also have used unfair subsidy practices to keep Boeing from being able to fairly compete against Airbus. That is why the WTO recently sided with a case brought by Boing. The reason for much of the Trade deficit between the United States and the EU, is because the EU has been playing the same game Trump is now playing for years. Anyone from the EU trying to act like it is unfair for Trump to put the United States first is a hypocrite. The EU has been putting their own self interests above their so called allies for decades now. They are just upset when other countries start treating them like they treat everyone else.
