No offense, I'm sure it was just literary license, but I've been on several juries: no one ever "brow beats" other jurors into a position they don't believe.
@jabbermocky4520
@jabbermocky4520 4 ай бұрын
I sat on a jury where one person, the forewoman whose name was randomly drawn, DID attempt to brow beat fellow jurors. She wanted to get out of there fast. Before we had even settled into our chairs she attempted to throw in a new charge against the defendant, one that was NOT on trial. I asked for a bailiff to consult with the judge because I knew her game. When I was called to clarify what the forewoman had done in deliberately tainting the jury, the judge asked me if I'd prefer to be replaced by an alternate juror. The forewoman had personally attacked me in the jury room saying "I didn't like the looks of YOU the moment you showed up this morning!" So much for unbiased, eh? In the end I did get replaced and some lawyers applauded me as I left the court. 2 of them asked if they could buy me a drink. It was only 3 PM and I had to go home to my kids so I declined. But the defendant was ultimately acquitted because I asked for judicial clarification and didn't capitulate to a prejudiced bully. That's all that really matters.

Although outright gerrymandering is much less in the UK we have a similar problem with the Conservative party in our country having been taken over by those on the more extreme right (though of course that is relative and even the Conservative party in the UK is in many ways slightly to the left of the Democrats in the US). As in the US we use the FPTP system in elections and that creates a large number of safe seats where a donkey wearing the right rosette (party colours) would get in and hence the MPs are more afraid of their local party replacing them than they are of the opposition parties. In recent decades that effect has been boosted by the number of active members in the Conservative party shrinking and aging together with infiltration from more extreme minor parties such as UKIP.
@terrystewart1973
@terrystewart1973 4 ай бұрын
@@davidwebb4451 Yes, the Conservatives have been taken over by extremists, but here in the UK we don't have those gerrymandered constituencies and are about to face the wrath of the electorate in a way that would never happen in the USA. And to be fair, the Labour Party was similarly taken over by extremists, which led to electoral catastrophe, with people thinking Boris was a better bet. And that electoral catastrophe for Labour meant they made the effort to kick those extremists out. Maybe something similar will happen with the Tories in opposition, but if not they will disappear as a political force in the UK, similar to what happened in Canada.

He explained the primary process perfectly. One other point is that the Republicans are the smaller party and are getting smaller with each election. They will not discuss changing the voting process because they are afraid of losing seats. We are stuck with the Electoral College from the 18th century for the same reason. They do nothing electorally because they don’t want to address problems. They prefer, instead, to run on the problems they should be solving. The immigration on the southern border is something both parties can address but the Republicans will not discuss it rationally. Social Security, the main retirement pension, and Medicare, health insurance for retirees, are running out of money because the government won’t tax rich workers after the first $168,600 of income is reached. In they could do that, there would be no issue for decades.
