The whatabout check on a double standard is fine. But not when it's used as a deflection to avoid answering a direct question. Imagine you were in a court and someone asks you a direct question. It would be a dodge to answer with... What about that guy? How come you aren't asking him. Just acknowledge the answer, and then you can ask a counter question about the other side.
