I’m in your age group and when I was 7 I swiped a single piece of candy from the grocery store we were shopping in. I got in the car after shopping and pulled the candy out of my pocket and popped it in my mouth. My father instantly knew that I stole it. He gave me a quarter and made me go back in the grocery store by myself and find the manager and tell him that I stole a piece of candy and I needed to pay for it. I was absolutely terrified. The store manager knew my father well and understood that my father was trying to teach me a lesson. The manager gave me a stern “talking to “ and gave me 15 cents change back and told me that I could leave. I have never forgot that experience.

I’m from North Minneapolis. A friend has been a community activist for a number of years and has led prayers at many shooting locations. In May of 2021 his 6 year old granddaughter was in the back seat of her moms car eating her happy meal. They, unfortunately drove into cross fire between gang combatants and sweet Aniya lost her life. I’m praying black churches can get the support to fight against violence.

Thank you for reminding us to be grateful for what we have Van. I am the wife of a wounded warrior and his full time caregiver and mom of 3. We are about to be homeless because we can’t afford our rent, food and basics, fuel and registration and insurance fees for our 1 vehicle to get him to his appointments, and his medical care in excess of our insurance any longer. It’s been too hard to find a handicapped accessible home for our family let alone one we can afford, but we have each other. We are both former professionals in the medical field and recently started a small handcrafted soap and body care business that we have started to build, and we are hoping that can hopefully help us stay in the home we are renting. I may not have any money to spare on anything beyond extreme basics, but I have an amazing love and beautiful children so I’m blessed.❤❤❤

Dear Van - I am a 76 year old “white woman” that was so thrilled when we got a black president because I thought that would prove how far we had come. I am a conservative Christian but was still thrilled. Then the reality hit. Obama brought race relations to a new LOW not high. All of a sudden skin color was everything. Now, I know I am reading that I am not allowed to have my opinion because I am white. Well, screw that. I, of course, notice people’s color - BUT I do not care what color someone is if they are good people. How did we get to this? It is tearing our country apart.
