The price we pay for genuine talk from politicians is giving them the benefit of the doubt when they say things that aren't polished and vetted not to offend. We also need to stop tailoring foreign policy rhetoric for domestic consumption. It leaves our allies and enemies confused as to where we stand. Once the generation who experienced the horror of war pass away, there is no one left to rein in those who have never been to war that want to start one.
@pcdm43145Ай бұрын
I get where you're coming from with that sentiment, but that's never really been the case for any society. In the broadest possible sense, wars are started by people who have decided that organized violence is the only way to achieve their goal, usually to either take what someone else has, or protect what they have from someone trying to take it. True, the men who led the US into disastrous wars in Afghanistan & Iraq were cowards who skipped out on serving in the Vietnam War, as younger men. Maybe, if they had carried a rifle through the jungles and rice-paddies of Vietnam, they wouldn't have been so glib about sending soldiers out to die for a pointless cause. Then again, most Western people thought anyone who experienced the horrors of WW1 would never start another war. But WW2 was started by a maniacal WW1-vet. And the Vietnam War was started by men who served in WW2, and never questioned their own righteousness, despite the case of being the most advanced country in the world invading a very poor, backward country of rural peasants, to interfere in their minor civil war. Anyone who starts a war, does so because they believe they can win it; they can be a chicken-hawk, or a hardened veteran. Anyway, that's my two-cents-worth on the subject. All the best, my friend.

It was remarkable how you got Susskind to admit he ruined one of his own student's careers. I expect that happens more than these Professors would like to admit. As to Eric's ideas for colonising exoplanets, I don't think any of his strategies involving new physics are viable, and I believe UAPs are custodians of biodiversity which were sent across the Milky Way at sublight velocities millions of years ago, and the only reason dinosaurs don't roam the Earth is that they showed up too late to deflect the asteroid. I think that their behaviour is consistent with immortal AGI pilots that are programmed only to intervene in the event of a nuclear exchange. They will prevent a nuclear apocalypse, but not to save us, but to save biodiversity in general, as life itself is quite rare and their biological creators from a very far off star system valued life and nearly destroyed themselves with a nuclear war. This answers the Fermi Paradox and means we need not fear The Dark Forest. The downside is we will be stuck here in our solar system, and die out when the Sun becomes a red giant, unless we relocate to the outer planets and turn Jupiter into a second Sun. Humanity will never colonise exoplanets, but then their alien civilisations (which Eric is currently searching for evidence of with Harvard University's Galileo Project can't get to us either). There is no travel through Eric's Chimeric Fiber Bundle without Quantum Decoherence. There is no pinch to zoom whilst we are in the tablet (you would need to be outside of his Observerse to manipulate the geometry of spacetime and have the power of a demigod, so that isn't viable). Dark Matter as a source of energy is basically how the Planet Express ship from _Futurama_ is powered, but that is still stuck within sublight speeds. There is no FTL. No bypassing spacetime. No wormholes. No warp. No generational ships. Nothing I can think of to get us, humans out there. But we could send out immortal robots to build cities and spread our civilisation, but if they tried to colonised a planet which even had some microbes, then the UAPs would zap them for not respecting their Prime Directive to preserve biodiversity. So, therefore the UAPs would stop any invading alien robots seeking to colonise Earth. They are the space police / park rangers of designated habitats for rare life. This makes them benign, although I suspect they may be radioactive and bad to be in proximity to.

To be fair though, LS was saying in that interview that string theory is a bust and he wants the younger generation of quantum physicists to come up with something that describes our actual universe, so EW is not presenting the full truth of it. I do find he cherry picks a lot to make his point, while omitting salient info. It was the very intelligent yet despairing autopsy of a scientific theory by an old man who realises he got it wrong. But I'm glad CJ got the recognition, it's a phenomenal channel and I've learned so so much by listening to his discussions.

Hopefully Eric will actually read this comment, because the sincerity behind what he said about not feeling like he has inspired anyone...! I would like him to know that out of all the people I have seen in podcasts, Eric is the only one I have ever found so complete in how he speaks to the ideas and conversations he is involved with, that I absolutely have to watch the entire show for the sole purpose of learning how to communicate at a higher level than what I already know how to do! I cannot put to words the incredible difficulty that I have had in my attempts to convey the process in which my mind understands the positions of the people, places and circumstances of all sides of any topic of discussion. I have personally experienced so many situations that would, in my opinion, be so mentally destructive, that a full recovery of mental, emotional, financial and physical status would be near impossible. Although I don't consider myself to have recovered 100%, I would say that I have obtained enough potential for full recovery in part due to the inspiration I have received by watching Eric and the way he presents himself and the carefully structed words he uses during these conversations. Eric may often be misinterpreted, however for me I understand his complexity in his thought process completely. I just lack the skills in being able to convey that complexity in the same manner as he does. So, thank you Mr. Eric Weinstein for the many opportunities you have given me to watch how you conduct yourself in such a proper manner in front of the many different and difficult audiences you have placed yourself so consistently the same in front of!

No the D.C. geeks are not responsible for the problems in this country, that is such a bad misunderstanding of the people Eric was referring to. You obviously don't understand the concept of an interview. You see what typically happens is that the host or hosts have on one or more guests who they think will say interesting things for some sector of their audience. It is down to the host(s) to select what will be interesting guest(s), but more importantly than that, to have their channel only be an interview channel (not also how to unblock sinks, or make a bird feeder). If they do that then they will confuse their audience who have come for these interviews. As to the content of the interview they can't really control that. I would not want them to edit out what they don't think will appeal to their notion of their audience. It is better to present the whole conversation that took place. Now, the key thing is your role in all of this as a member of their audience. You don't have to be. Complaining about the guest has about a 0.0000000003% chance of changing their behaviour. Try it out with a friend when you are down the pub with them. When someone asks them about "Where are you planning to go on holiday?" or "Do you have any pictures of your new baby?" you really need to interrupt and say "What about the war in Ukraine! We could all be vaporised next week! Who cares about holidays we won't live to see and babies that won't grow up? We need to put our heads together and decide what we can do to stop Global Thermonuclear War!!!" See how that goes.

Like he said, we have an epidemic of certainty. People feeling certain when they shouldn't, or faking certainty, or trying to force certainty when they should accept that something is uncertain. I don't remember who, but there is a quote that does something like: "There is nothing people hate more than uncertainty." Most people just can't stand accepting "I don't know" for themselves. So we have a bunch of ignorant people stating things with certainty when they know that they know little because it is what we have been socially trained and instinctively want to do. Normally, not really a problem. But with geopolitics, the stakes are nukes, not getting a bit of trivia wrong.
@just_browsinАй бұрын
@@liarwithagunthis feels like it may be the only reasonable comment thread. Most of the comments are trashing him because he doesn't give a full throated endorsement of Trump. The first half of the video is Eric explaining that while change is definitely necessary there's a worry that things are pushed too far and there's a fear the upcoming administration breaks something that they didn't intend to break. Sounds reasonable to me. But the comments on this video make me feel like I'm in the minority. Endemic of certainty is a good way to put it. It feels like a lot of people have become sycophants and don't accept the slightest pushback on their views....either that or the comments are just bots astroturfing...what a time to be alive.

He thinks the establishment is much more critical than most people do, and that keep the international status quo is worth sacrificing a lot for. I disagree with him, but I see where he is coming from. In other words, we should let the FBI control social media, the internet, the news, and elections because whistleblowers and "trouble makers" (like Trump) could use it to destroy the Rules-Based-Internation-Order that the world has run on for the last 80 years. And that has a chance of causing nuclear war that drops us back into the stone ages, but this time everyone has cancer now. And it does look like Trump is trying to change the order that has been in place for the last 80 years. It's why I voted for him. Basically, he doesn't like the current system either, but he has a slight favor towards it over extreme radicals like Trump. But he isn't upset over Trump either, he'd just rather the status quo, or in the perfect world a less radical person who wants to restructure the government. The problem is that a less radical person is just not effective or able to actually do anything in such an ossified system (think RFK, Tulsi, etc. and how effective they were). That is just how things work. Slavery didn't slow or stop until the most radical stance was taken (Not allowed at all) as an easy example. The real dream is that Trump comes in, rips and tears, breaking down enough of the ossification of our government so that more moderate people can actually effect change that isn't just further cementing the ossified government.
