Is this as detrimental to the lower lip as to the top lip? I play on the red of my bottom lip, and for a while now too. Does it affect consistency? One more Q: what if it feels like you don't have one clear aperture in the middle of your mouth and it sort of feels like two?

You're spot on about rolling the lips in. I always told my students to play on "the hard parts" of their lips and to try not to let the air push out the "mushy" parts. (I taught beginners through advanced players for 35 years so I had to dumb it down a bit for the 9 year olds.) Keep up the good work!

Xx_blank_x X anytime you make a change to your embouchure you are going to use muscles you haven’t used before. They will be weak. So yes, it’s normal to lose range and other skills. All changes should be done under the observation of a trumpet teacher.

I have 2-3 things to say about this video: 1. I'm just now getting back into playing my trumpet and I had trouble with my embouchure. I was wondering why I sounded so fuzzy and ig "airy" while I was playing. 2. I want to thank you for showing a close up visual of what I was doing wrong. I had issues arrise a few months ago from overplaying and they never went away. I had heard of this term before, but I was still able to play a really healthy range, so I never looked into it. That being said, while I am going to really have to practice this change in embouchure and almost rebuild my range ground up, already I feel much better. Thank you so much for this

Thank you! Sigmund Hering has a book for double and triple tonguing. It’s basically the section out of the Arban, which you can also use of course. Arban beginning studies #11-27 are great for articulation practice and so are all the syncopation studies. If you want to clean up tonguing you literally just use one note and practice articulation exactly the same every single time, then go down a half step. Good luck!

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I started playing the Cornet in 1977, and I played into 1984! I finally gave up and went onto other instruments because I couldn't play high notes and I was tired all the time! A week ago Friday, i found a Trumpet at a yard sale. They wanted $5 for it! I am SO glad I found this video, as that IS my problem. I learned incorrectly over 30yrs ago and also up until recently have been also playing on WAY too small a mouthpiece, sigh. How do you roll the top lip? I have to set-up by bringing my mouthpiece from top (head) down to my lips vs the other way. It helps me to remember it needs to be on top of lip vs red area. I just purchased a new mouthpiece as my old one was fatiguing me too quickly and my upper register was very difficult. My upper register has never been very good and the reason is too small a mouthpiece. I am making slow progress on the new mouthpiece, a Stork Vacchiano 1.5E.

Amy Frechette thanks for watching Amy! What you’re doing is helpful, to slide the mouthpiece down from the nose to make sure you’re not pulling your top lip back. Side note of your mouthpiece: that’s a very shallow piece. I wouldn’t not recommend it at all for someone who is making an embouchure change, a beginner or intermediate player.

@@TrumpetHeadquarters My Vacchiano 3B was making me exhausted to play on and I had No range, even back in high school I was never a high note player. I started off on stuff way TOO small so I am trying to correct the problem. I agree I think I am going to contact Stork about getting a deeper cup. I prefer a dark sound have always loved the flugel because of the deep and mellow sound you get. The mouthpiece I currently have was a starting point purchased direct from Stork and they said we could make changes as we go if need be. My final question is I own a Bach 7C Trombone (Euphonium) mouthpiece, do you think buzzing on it will help me w placement so my lips (mouth) aren't open? With this mouthpiece it covers your entire lip surface vs trumpet. Thanks Again.

This really helped! I had difficulty reaching the C5 before this, anything lower was fine. My teacher is a french horn player and he was stumped figuring out why I couldn't go any higher. I have been looking at youtube video's for some tips and it got me thinking that I never really trained my embouchure. Using a good embouchure my range went from C4-C5 to G4-G5. It feels way more comfortable too so I think I'm going in the right direction. I guess I now need to practice more using this embouchure and get the lower notes working again.

That's great! Yes, although the French horn is very similar in many ways, the embouchure setup is quite different. I recommend you focus a lot on long tones for at least 2 weeks to establish the new muscle set and get stronger. As you go down think "ahhh" and lower your tongue to get the notes with ease. Jerry Eisner the visualizer I have actually goes into the receiver, like a mouthpiece. The advantage is I can use it with the exact same amount of pressure and positioning I use when I play, it can also be used to buzz if needed, though I don’t do that. The extended holding arm has the advantage of an unobstructed view.

Soloing in any genre is the same basics. The MOST important aspect of improv is being familiar with the music. Can you sing improv a salsa solo? For me that’s step one. If you can’t do it off the horn then you should start there. Listen listen and listen and then emulate with your voice. Don’t think of what scales, that’s more of a jazz habit, in salsa the scales are very common, lots of minor forms. Instead of scales think of rhythm, syncopation, and articulation. Like I said, the best way to go is to listen to salsa and learn the lines you hear. Feel free to let me know how it goes!

Lower teeth should ideally be vertically aligned with the top teeth. This provides an even surface for the mouthpiece to rest, and avoid putting too much weight on the top or bottom lip. Wilson Diaz hi thanks for watching this video. I think the PETE is great for intermediate/advanced players who have a teacher. I don’t think it’s good for beginners, or for any level student to use on their own. It has potential to do more harm than good. With guidance though it IS a great tool to strengthen an embouchure that’s already well established, but not to form or develop one. FYI, I do own a PETE and I love it.

If you are not experiencing any significant problems just leave it alone. You may just need development to iron out your current problems. If after weeks of daily and correct practice you continue to have some problems I would consult a instructor with a private lesson.

Wilson Diaz ALWAYS start with the tongue!! Breath or air articulation is sometimes used but not for playing actually music. Sometimes we use it to correct problems in students. So ask your teacher. Have fun!

da11king thanks for watching the video. Yes, it’s possible to play in the red and sound ok or decent. If you are experiencing fatigue, unclear tonguing and flexibility issues your embouchure could be incorrect. It’s not easy to make an embouchure change because at first you will not sound good, but over time you will sound 100 times better than you did before. Feel free to check out my website at trumpetheadquarters.com. Maybe the lessons there could help you since you don’t have access to a teacher at the moment. Usually problems with range show up if the upper lip is a lot shorter than the front top teeth, which would also be the case with long front teeth. I can't advice you properly without actually seeing you play of course, like a doctor who can't diagnose your illness without seeing you in person, but many players have success by placing the mouthpiece lower on the lower lip. It may or may not work work you. The relationship between the teeth and lips is important for trumpet playing and a balance is ideal, but you can sometimes be successful. I recommend you find a very good trumpet instructor either in person or online to examine your case. Hope that helps!

How do I know if my mouthpiece is too big or too small? I notice that my lips get tired and shake when I’m playing high gs

You won't know if it's too big or small for your needs right now if you're beginner (aka playing for 0-3 years). Why? Because the first few years of playing create big changes and adjustments in our lips and embouchure. We strengthen new muscles sets we didn't use before and slowly acclimate our lips, facial muscles and even teeth to endure the weight of the trumpet. The best thing any beginner can do is to start with a standard mouthpiece size 7C or equivalent. This is comfortable for the large majority and playable for a wide variety of lip types and shapes. Some exceptions of course are for those with extreme overbites and things like that, but otherwise, focus on developing your embouchure on a standard mouthpiece and SLOWLY developing your range. High notes don't matter if your tone, rhythm and flexibility are lacking. Without those, the high note will always be difficult!

Haven't played in years. Just got my horn out again. Been listening a lot to Chet Baker who has a very airy sound. Most videos I've seen are about how to get rid of the air, but I'm wanting to immigrate Chet. any thoughts?

An airy tone is generally not done on purpose, it’s just how some play. You could open up the aperture a little and bring air into your tone, BUT it will very likely mess you up all over the place because it may not be your ideal playing position. Imitation as a beginner is very difficult. Instead you should focus on fundamentals and getting your tone, flexibility and control back. Then you will be more successful at imitation. Iowangal Smith if you’re an absolutely beginner I recommend you check out my course on www.trumpetheadquarters.com. I go over allll the basics of trumpet playing. Getting a book on your own can be problematic because there is high chance you could setup your embouchure wrong from the start. Start with the course and go from there. That’s my suggestion. @@rhice8829 ok so ...if the tone isn't a desired one then there could be an embouchure problem. If the tone is good though, then you've got no problem. If you're saying the actual notes are the same, like you can't play different notes, then again there is likely an issue at the embouchure. If you're interested, try my online course. My range was completely reset and I have to start from zero again. Is this normal because I’m kind of mad that I have to start over and form a better embouchure.

Ahhh frustration; the #1 step in an embouchure change. YES, IT IS NORMAL, but rest assured it’s not permanent. Think about it this way, you are using a new muscle set now, and they’re weak, so you will need to shape and strengthen them. Focus on LONG long tones in your attainable range to rebuild. Hold each note as long as possible. A couple times a day and that’s it. Good luck, doing an embouchure change without a teacher is difficult, but not impossible. Best of luck!

Been practicing for about 2 years now, recently I notice my lower lips curls around my bottom teeth and I get bruised inside my lip. I am trying this out but my lower lip still curls in, any advice on how to correct myself?

Ive been playing since i was 8 am now 37 just play for self enjoyment these days and i like to bugle for scouts. I am actually not able to play if i'm not in the red zone. my comfort zone is in the red zone.

So do I curl in my lips? Sorry, I’m currently a trumpet player, and I have a concert next month. I’m sucking at most of the songs and the way I’m playing makes 1. The trumpet sound muffled. 2. Makes weird noises. 3. Makes my notes sound weird in general.

Mmmm if the sound is muffled you probably 1) have you lips too close together 2) too tight in the center. The corners of the lips should be tight or “engaged” but the part in the mouthpiece has to be relaxed. And yes, there is a curl in for most. The thicker the lips, the bigger the curl. Hope that helps!
