Hi Ted, have been watching your Part Three Build, with limited painting /spraying facilities I have built 'units' that are dry assembled that I can later remove and spray Prime (in the Garden) then paint brush. I have not fitted the 'cupboard' in the Head (to give more room and have left some doors off) I will leave the roof to slide in last (you don't need location lugs to fit every component) that would have solved your 'air duct' locating problems. I am enjoying your videos and refer back to them for assembly and painting.

You're correct about the captains bunk and some of the front bunks are for officers but there's also some for the radar and sonar operators. It doesn't show it but there are more bunks on the close side, hence the table with the sides down that seems to be just in the open there. (Radar is the aft section next to the hatch and sonar is the fore one. This way the sonar can immediately let the captain know if they have a contact. If you're looking for more WWII u-boat stuff there's a game called silent hunter (I prefer 5 the most but I've been told 4 is pretty good too, you can walk around the interior of the sub in 5 though.) Also on a side note while I don't know about battle stations lighting, at night the lights were dimmed to red to help keep the sailers internal clocks since they can't see outside.

1:31 that's the captains bed and quarter, he was the only one who had a bed for his own, every other member of a Type VII and also the Type IX's had to share beds. Two men, one bed.

Good evening: This is quite the model. What kind of coin dose this kit run? Thank you Forever in His service

Ted, they call it the "head" because in the days of British sailing vessels, the "Seats of Ease" for enlisted men were planks with openings in them that sat across the head timbers outside of the ships body. The product of these seats would go directly down into the sea. They were in the head end of the vessel and thus Head was the term used to describe them. Officers had their places on the wings that extended from the sides of the aft cabins. It must have been a hell of an experience to use them when the ship was making way and bow waves shooting up. It was probably the inspiration for the Bidet. Wonderful build. Don't like building German equipment. If Trumpeter would do a US boat that would be very cool. But where to put it?...

The enigma unit was located below the desk level in it's own compartment that hinged open in the desk itself, completely invisible unless in use. No need to torture yourself

on the subject of the single head, the HMS Alliance (a British submarine of the same era and preserved in the Gosport submarine museum) only has a single toilet aboard, also it looks like a horrifically complicated piece of kit , its a steel pan sitting atop a mess of pipes and valves. its worth a day out if your nearby that area for any reason

Why the overhead beams Brown? And didnt they have red lighting throughout the boat for when they were under attack?
@stevedrew6 жыл бұрын
The red lighting is not for when they were under attack. The red lighting is to ensure that immediately after they surface and the crew gets up into the sail or conning tower that their eyes can adjust to the dark conditions at sea at night. Some of the crew would be wearing goggles and almost totally blind and had to have their hands guided to the ladder so that their eyes would be completely adjusted to the night conditions. The very first thing once a submarine is surfaced is to do a COMPLETE scan of the surrounding ocean. That is paramount for the safety of the boat and the crew. The red lighting also assists if the normal lighting is extinguished by enemy action or malfunction aboard the sub, enabling crew to locate torches to quickly fix the fault.

Great work. So not knowing how the model goes together, is this officer section "module" (for lack of a better word) get placed in the outer shell so that the wires are hidden? And what is a great build without some swearing. :)
@skipperted7 жыл бұрын
Michael Snow yes all the modules come together to fit inside the hull.. hopefully leaving enough room to hide any wires
