I must admit... Watching Trump "fail" like this puts a big smile on my face. And why? Because his skills are equally as amazing as they are intimidating. I am quite the -below average- Hearthstone player, and going 0-3 in arena happens rather often to me. Sometimes I feel there is no hope to ever get better. But seeing Trump lose puts some of the faith back into me. Even he, the almighty Trump, is only a mortal who draws the short one every now and then. Reminds me that Hearthstone is still about fun, not just competitive struggles.

I've noticed this problem with arena since GvG came out - a lot of decks end up very light on late game. It's gotten to the point where I start looking at war golems a lot more fondly, just to have anything at all with a cost higher than 4.

I really think Trump should start valuing Antique Healbot a lot more in arena, especially on classes that have weapons and no sustain like Shaman and Rogue. He even picked a DoomHammer and an Axe this run and he knew there was gonna be a lot of face damage as a result. It also helps a lot when playing vs mages that usually just drop you to 10-15 hp, then lose board control and rely on fireballs and pyroblasts to kill you. Healbot can completely ruin their plan. I know Trump keeps saying that arena isn't about hp, it's about value, but especially since GvG with all the sticky minions, many games come down to who runs out of hp faster.

Generally I think antique healbot is terrible. But with doomhammer/a stormforged/the possibility of picking up a 3rd weapon, or more card draw, I would have taken it there. He was kinda high on 2s, too, and did end up getting flooded slightly.

He lost game two because he decided to keep two fours in his opening hand when he is playing a deck with no late game and his deck is built around getting early board control and then rolling people over (like the first game). Trump - why do you have to be SOOO greedy?!!?! It is super painful to watch sometimes - I shout at my monitor so very often lol.

You weren't paying attention I guess. He had something to play on curve every turn, so keeping two 4 drops didn't hurt at all. He lost the game because for some reason on turn 5 he decided to give up his tempo advantage to play Mana Tide Totem + hero power even though his hand was already top tier and he didn't need the card draw yet. Even Trump agrees that arena is all about tempo, so I'm still baffled as to why he'd do that.

Harry Potter I'm not sure when Trump agreed that arena is all about tempo. I think he would agree that it is about striking a balance between tempo and card advantage, which changes between situations. Although I'm not convinced by his play either

Harry Potter Yeah, it was definitely the Mana Tide totem play that did him in. If he hadn't done that, it might have gone very differently. Not to say he definitely would have won, but that clearly shifted the battle in his opponent's favor.

Ted Wallace You aren't very convinced probably because he's playing a Midrange Shaman type deck, where's it's ALL about the mid-game tempo swing towards Shaman's favor. Instead, like others have noted, he plays Mana tide + Hero power instead of his 5 drop allowing his opponent to play a 6 drop unanswered.

2nd game, there was no reason to play mana tide so early when you could develop powerful 4 drop minions fueled by Flametongue. You just reduce your own power on the board for 'value' when you already value!

In that last game, I don't feel like Trump's logic made all that much sense. He did one more damage with the Spider Tank to the Mage than he would have with just the Axe: he essentially took 3 more damage just to do 1 more damage. Maybe if that Spider Tank was something else, like, his Force Tank MAX, then yeah I'd agree with the logic maybe...

It's what a lot of pro players do. They claim certain cards "actually are good! I swear!" in order to be hipster and different. Very rarely does it amount to much more than a gimmick deck that is mostly for fun, a highlight or two, or just forgetting about it after a week of defending it. If it looks like shit, smells like shit, and plays like shit (no one can make it work in a deck), it's probably shit.

He didn't lose game 2 because of mana tide + hero power. He lost because he didn't get good draws from mana tide. Getting a 5/6 and flametongue on turn 5 wouldn't make it easier to clear the sunwalker. In fact getting a 2/2 healing totem was unexpectedly good for breaking the shield, and the fen creeper that he played on turn 6 could trade perfectly well with the sunwalker. Trump lost because his opponent got the perfect removal. First the gorehowl, then the whirlwind + execute + berserker buff. The mana tide play was not necessarily inferior than the fen creeper play as he did have a taunt to play in the following turn to protect the totems.

I'll be honest...this was the first run I ever predicted to crash and burn quickly even with trump behind the wheel. Not enough strong spells for removal with a lot of early cards and weak late game cards. It's a sad day when you have to rely on MAX to be your big guy xD

My guess is Trump was not really into it during this run. He made some bad decisions that he usually doesnt make like missing a clear set up for multi-shot, then not seeming to realize his Spider Tank would get healed out of fire blast range just to do one more point of damage (with doom hammer in hand no reason not to hit face with the equipped weapon). That isn't even a small thing since he likely wins the last game if he doesnt go to 5.

I thought I was the only one thinking a multishot was coming. I'm a piss poor player compared to trump to and I watch him for his insight that I don't have. He made a few careless and silly mistakes that he's not used to. The mana tide totem on turn 5 when he had a fen creeper, the time he used his face to hit the minion in the last game instead of making the safe trade because the opponent may have had fireball. He's smarter than that. There is no guarantee, with GVG that anyone even gets fireball anymore. I ran a mage and got 0 fireballs/frostbolts/ flame strikes. He just wasn't thinking this time.

It's an exaggeration that he likely wins the game, but. Definitely wrong to not kill it for free with the spider tank, cause not only do you add frostbolt to the list of things you die to, you also add just - boardflood. Now you can only expect to kill 2-3 minions the following turn, so it's almost impossible your opponent can't kill you somehow.

Nathan Parker Well, if he plays doom hammer and the 1 drop instead of totem his opponent is at 20 health, he's at 8 and what does the opponent do in that situation? Imperfect information, but if he bolts the 4/2, pings the shield off the 1/1 Trump can clear with the tank plus a hit from doom hammer, drop the 7/7. Or drop totem, use the tank to clear and hit for 9 making it 11 life to 8, Trump with complete board control and who knows what in the mages hand. Sure if he can clear the flame tongue totem Trump's in bad shape, but if he had the damage for that he could have killed Trump the turn before. I think he wins from there, but without knowing the Mage's cards it is hard to know for sure.

tkell31 What does opponent do if trump plays doomhammer instead of totem? A good bet is he plays taz'dingo, since that's what he actually does next turn. If he plays 4 more toughness of stats trump's board doesn't trade evenly without doomhammer (and if I'm him I do that and hold the frostbolt, so he has to basically make the same gambit he just made) and then the mage wins. But lets say no frostbolt. Same situation, pass. Trump is overloaded for 2, has to take same (similar) gambit, go to 5. His option of force-tank max or whatever he draws + totem on an empty board (healing, spell damage totem, likely squire). Either way, if the opponent can play 3 creatures the following turn, 1 is getting in (force-tank will take care of 1, lets say trump wins the 50/50 on taunt totem following turn to take care of 1), lets imagine for just 3, +ping puts trump in the same position, granted it takes more turns. I agree with the totem play over doomhammer to avoid overloading and pretty much guarantee a 1/1 and a taunt over the next turns, I'd just also hold weapon to maximize potential against board flood.

Nathan Parker The 4/2 could take out another 4 toughness minions and Tank+Totem takes out the Tazdingo. If the opponent doesnt frost bolt he has five mana. Not even sure why you are arguing it. It is indisputable he would be better off with a 3/2 tank, a developed doom hammer and 8 health v a 3/4 tank, another totem and 5 health.

Fel Reaver is only good in aggressive rush down decks, and since it was your first pick it would be a horrible card to pick. Good thing you didn't listen to yourself and choose wisely.

Fel Reaver could be ok in constructed, but it's terrible in arena 95% of the time. You can't reliably rush your opponent down, and sooner than later, you're left without cards.

guys, think of fel reaver this way. similar to a flame imp that gives the best stats for 1 mana but takes 3 life to play, fel reaver is the best stats card for 5 mana but kills your deck size every turn (every card opponent plays). no one values card deck size until the game goes til fatigue. think about that. when have you ever thought, "hmm i better limit my card draw cards because i will die faster when fatigue hits" there is NO advantage gained by having a larger deck in the early and mid game. but the thing about fel reaver compared to flame imp is that it's a mid game card. there is no such deck that focuses on mid game, actually maybe control hunter. but other than that, there is no deck that aims to win in the mid game. its like asking why yeti isnt put in constructed decks even though it looks pretty good. its because it has no synergy with any playstyle right now. its not "good enough" but still a pretty good card, especially in arena as good as a yeti can be for 4 drops. better than a venture co on turn 5 because again, deck size doesnt matter for most games.

Well said. Another argument I've seen against Fel Reaver is once it's burned one of your cards, you can't draw it (duh, but still). Like if your deck requires Antonidas (just for example. I don't think that would be a very strong deck, anyway :P), and Fel Reaver burns it, that may as well be a lost game. However, that Antonidas could have been at the bottom of the deck then it's the exact same thing.

That mentality would be correct for both of you were this a game like MTG with 60+ card decks. To start with a Fel Reaver is likely to burn your entire deck in 3-4 turns and that's if you draw it for your turn 5. After that you only have what's in your hand to win the game. GrandDracolich If you burn your late game you screw yourself. 30 Card decks don't run enough of it to take that risk which is why the only type of deck it fits into is full on aggro or zoo where it doesn't matter what individual cards you burn. If you don't win off of a Fel Reaver the disadvantage will almost always make you lose.

i5m1thy well, still 8/8 on board for 3-4 turns will end up killing opponent if it is left on board. It must be dealt with in at most two turns or you risk yourself pretty bad. Even a 30 card deck can hold that long.

2starkiller An 8/8 on turn 5 isn't that difficult to deal with in constructed. People are used to meeting a turn 4 4/9 twilight drake followed by a turn 5 8/8 giant anyway. In arena taunts are very common. If you meet a mage with frostbolt or a paladin with aldor peacekeeper you just lose. It will win you some games but do you want to rely on that rng?

I find that it is significantly harder for me to get twelve wins with Shamans now, and I don't really know what exactly GvG changed specifically for this to be the case. On EU I pick Shaman basically whenever he's offered, and since GvG, I've had a lot of disappointing runs where I go 2-5 wins. Even with my incredibly good decks that have 2+ Fire Elementals (or a crazy deck I got that had a bunch of 1 mana spells and Gazlowe), I could only get those decks to 8-10 wins. In contrast, I've already hit twelve with Paladin three times. QQ Shaman, don't know what I'm doing wrong with you or if you really did get worse.

gvg arenas are alot faster than before, so unless you draw your storm or two or atleast some high quality/sticky early minions like golem, tank or shredder, you are just gonna lose the board in a couple of turns and then its hard to recover as a class thats supposed to be the one controlling the board. Fire ele doesnt seem so good anymore either, gvg brough some new sticky or 4hp+ minions that arent free food for fire ele and shaman didnt really get any other really good arena cards, both epics suck, vitality totem is junk, ogre is junk, zapomatic, crackle and weapon are okay, but hardly noteworthy, unless you manage like coin zapomatic into annoytron into flametognue rockbiter or smth. there just arent any cards that ca carry you, unlike, say, floating watcher, that card is absolute beast in arena, carried me to 12 wins on walrock twice, while i never managed to break 7 pre gvg on warlock...

Robert Matys Warlock definitely got a lot better, actually mainly just because the neutral card pool is quality and low curve, so warlock's weaker class cards matter less and warlock can outcard the opponent consistently. You're definitely wrong saying the powermace is not noteworthy, it's kind of a 8/8 charge, immune to spells and attacks, weak to ooze, battlecry deal 5ish to your hero, for 3 mana. It may be the single best pickup for any class in GvG. I understand that this type of valuation makes all weapons seem good, but for the most part, all weapons are good. And I'm completely happy to fire ele a piloted shredder, fire ele's still good. Shaman over all got slightly weaker, but it's still top half of the card, I find.

Yeh, I love Powermace, though my only problem is that I sometimes wind up not drawing a mech for a long time and thus don't want to use the last charge of the weapon. I've had to take that stupid 2/5 Murloc several times already, and in a deck with zero murlocs besides him, he's the worst card to see. Sometimes he buffs Unbound Elemental though, so that's decent. I also have had to take Dunemaul Shaman several times, and I hate him too. 5/4 stats leaves an inability to get favorable trades with, and you don't even get to choose what it hits because of his ability, so you can't just burst the opponent down for ten damage unless you get lucky. Crackle is good, but I hate having to rely on the 50/50 to kill a Yeti so often, or even the 25/75 to kill a 4 health minion. Often I'm in a position where if I whiff, I probably lose, and I never want to be in such a position.

Yeah, deck looks like a 12 win midrange Shaman deck. If trump played it right. I think Trump overvalues playing the "value game". He makes favorable trades, and ends up ahead in card value from his opponent. But, he loses BOARD CONTROL and TEMPO. You could see this in the game against the Warrior where he loses absolutely because he plays the Mana tide totem instead of the Fen Creeper. Even in the final game, he loses the game because he doesn't make the safe 3/4 trade into the Senjin. As an infinite arena player myself, it's really frustrating watching someone pilot a 12 win deck to the grave. Trump, I think you are severely undervaluing the importance of temp in the GvG arena.
