I think she's so much better. When helping Gary to put the first layer of the roof on (last year), Mel was terrified! I was so stressed watching her, but Gary was patient and calm, guiding her through this. It was that video, when I subscribed to the channel.

Brilliant editing Melanie...this is how I get when my hubby goes on about motor racing. Love the dancing squirrel, that will have me chuckling the rest of the weekend. ....and great work on the deck guys. That will make such a difference when it rains again....and to keep the sun off the doors and windows downstairs when your summer starts.....just don't overdo it. Take your time and treat yourselves well, there's always tomorrow.

Mel, are y'all thinking about screening in the porch deck? you can put the screen on the inside of the railing, it would make it more comfortable in the summer with all the bugs...also may I suggest , you probably have already planned this but .....a couple of outdoor ceiling fans to make it more comfortable....my friend had some screen put all around the inside of her porch looked so nice and no bugs.......

Yay The board thingy is up. ( layman's term) Even with me having a lot of carpentry experience I was with you Melanie 😊 ( You did an awesome job with the special effects) A simple I'm going to notch the end of each post this many inches by this many inches would have sufficed for most ordinary people. But we know Gary is far from.ordinary and we like it that way 😊 Excited for you. Things are starting to take shape. Wishing you the best of success with the rest of the project

A couple of suggestions for the beams. First, check your boards at the store for wonkiness before purchase. If you have limited options make sure the crown is up on the beam so it will settle down over time. Second, you should not put both beams together in this application. You have a double joint that is a weak point in the greater beam. What should have been done is one full row with the second row coming in with the second joint midspan between posts. You should have applied a bead or three of constriction adhesive then, followed up with several rows of screws. The rule is a 2x4 should have 2 screws connecting, 2x6 3 and a 2x8 4. You will want a zig zag pattern (think W). Screws applied in a straight line have a bigger chance to split along the screw line. For wonky boards, nothing is beter than a nice set of clamps to pull them in line. Lastly, what kind of screws you use to bind the beam is important. There are screws designed for this specific application. using the regular DeckMate type screws is ok but it just means more are needed. Please don't forget to install a hurricane strap from the post to the beam on each post.

I noted that it looks like you cut more than 50% of the post in the notching. You have compromised the structure beyond the safe margin. You will want to use construction adhesive and thru bolts to secure it. You should also finish up with more blocking on all sides so the flooring has structural support on all sides.

I know you want to go for the expensive composite decking but consider this...I just replaced the wood on my family's home with a covered porch....the porch floor was almost 100yrs old and lasted that long because it was covered.....you might not need that high dollar composite since your porch will be covered. ...regular decking boards last a long time if you stain them good .

If I lived closer to y’all now I’m retired I’d help you build that whole house in no time! In one of my careers I built houses for a while. I also done brick masonry and concrete. I had my own roofing business for a second career for about 2 years. I also built furniture and I finished out my career as over the road Truck driver so I’m kinda a jack of all trades so to speak. If I lived closer I could show you how to and help you and we’d have that house built in no Time flat. It breaks my heart to see Gary struggling to figure things out and I can tell you’re just learning & trying to figure things out as you go. A carpenter knows when he’s watching something that’s not up to snuff so to speak and I tell you’re struggling in figuring things out. So I’m assuming this is the first house you guys have built and you’re trying your best. I could get on here and bad mouth ya but I won’t so I just say PROGRESS 😁👍🏼. Despite what people say to ya don’t let them get ya down. Just keep on pushing forward!!! Framing square walls and putting up pre fabricated roof trusses is all easy carpentry work. But doing add on’s and add on roofs that attach to existing roofs are a bit tricky because you have to figure out the angles and geometry and if someone has never done that it’s a struggle!!! Because lumber isn’t cheap especially screwing it up and having to redo something. Here’s my advice find you some KZbin videos on figuring out carpentry angles and the geometry of Framing up a porch or deck roof that’s marrys off of an existing house roof to get your perfect roof drainage pitch. But I can tell you right now my way which would be the proper way to attach that porch roof to the house if you’ll take my advice. First you will have to take some of that grace underlayment off as well as cut into the zip board on your house roof right at each Roof Truss and tie into all your trusses with your new porch trusses. If I was you I would only take a Skil saw and cut right along beside each one of the house trusses that you need to tie into and just cut a big enough piece of the zip board out right beside ea House roof truss to allow you to put your 2 x 6 and I would use 2 x 6 because you’re gonna have a long Spand and you don’t want to use 2x4’s. I would tie my 2x6 porch roof rafters going thru the zip board and attaching to each of the house trusses. This will make it strong and it will make it an actual part of the roof structure and not a add-on and it will be able to withstand winds and snow load. Where are you attach your rafters to your roof trusses need to be in a square line all the way across the house. Your end rafter coming from your last house Truss on ea end of the house will have to have Tie ins rafters that tie in to the sides of each 2 last rafters that you can actually tie to your last roof trusses on both sides of the house. Because your roof that goes over your deck has that extra 45° angle going away from the house. So when you get to the last trust that you can tie into and you run that rafter all the way down that will be the rafter that you have to tie off of with your angles To get out to finish the roof on the porch. You will also need a 4X4 post or 2 on each side of your deck in the center of both ends that can help hold that weight of your tie on rafters. Back to the roof where are you tied in to your trusses then put your Grace underlayment back over where you tied into them and when you put your metal roof on the house or shingle or whatever you’re going to use or you can cover it all up then because it’s all part of the same roof it’s all tied in together. I don’t know if this makes any sense to you but if I was in person I could show you what I’m talking about & make you understand it. But I would definitely tie into those roof trusses on the house with 2x6’s and make it a actual extension of the house roof. Because if you just try to get up there and nail it to the existing roof on top without going through the zip board and tying to the trusses the first real strong wind you have coming through there like straight line winds coming from a nearby tornado or winds from a hurricane still get strong 60-70 mph winds & it’s going to take the whole roof off that porch & Rip it off of the house roof also. So it definitely needs to be tied into the trusses on the house to do it proper & not nailed to the roof because that’s a disaster waiting to happen. But if I’m not mistaken the way your trusses was put on the house they go from front door to the back door which would be perfect for you to be able to cut into the roof and join your rafters to the trusses on the house. Had the trusses went from side to side on the house you would not be able to tie into them. But the way your roof Goes I’m pretty sure you can do as I’ve said and tie into each Truss with your rafters. If I was there helping U do the job I would pick 3 days of NO RAIN & make my cuts through all the grace and the zip board on the house for as high up as my rafters needed to tie in to my trusses and run down to my porch header and get my angle for water pitch & snow load. I’d get all my 2x6 rafters tied into all my house roof trusses and sit in place then I’d put my zip board on my house and my new rafters of my porch and zip taped and put my new Grace underlayment on all of it tying it all together. Then I’d do my wonky Tie ins to my sides of my porch. Look I hope my long book I wrote here has given you a clearer vision of what doing that roof right is all about. Also here’s another thing to consider the reason I said I would connect to the Trusses is this : Just me looking at it on your video looks like you’re going to have to go up a little ways on that house roof where are you’re gonna have to Tie in to give it the correct angle that you need for your roof pitch so in doing that you will also need to run vertical 2x6’s maybe 3’- 4’ Long from your 2x6 rafters back down to the roof trusses closer to the outer or soffit edge of your house to give you roof support in Case of a snow load and wind. So you will also have to make All your cuts thru the Grace and zip board for Vertical braces. Because you can’t just run a 20-24 foot span of 2 x 6 Rafter without some vertical supports if that is registering With you. As you notice the trusses come pre-built with vertical bracing for the same reason you have to have that vertical support also. I hope I have explained this to where it gives you a good understanding of what would be the best route to tie that roof in and make it actually a part of the house and not just a nail on job that can’t be blowed off with a real hard wind. Hey maybe I got thru to ya I think you can figure it out from what I’ve said. If I was standing there in front of you by your house I could pawn it out to you in five minutes you understand everything I said so I can’t do that I’m too far away but maybe you can understand it from what I wrote . Hey , peace ✌🏼And PROGRESS 😁👍🏼

I congratulate you both for your amazing project and content. About this particular one inhalation of posts, I wondered...it would be helpful if you could use cargo straps to manage pulling on the post for plumbing by tightening one end of the strap around the post ant the other around a floor joists. I hope this may be helpful for future projects. God bless
