Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 100: Singer-songwriter-percussionist-producer Philip Bailey, who for has spent 47 years as a primary figure of the legendary funk, R&B and pop band Earth, Wind and Fire. Born and raised in Denver, Bailey’s early influences included Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughan and Dionne Warwick.
Famous for his four-octave vocal range and particularly for his show-stopping falsetto register, Bailey has recorded some 20 albums with Earth, Wind and Fire and another 10 as a solo artist. The Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has also collaborated with numerous other artists, and in the late 1970s produced the Kinsman Dazz band’s first two albums. That group later became the Dazz Band.
Here, TRUTH IN RHYTHM caught up with Bailey from the road between tour dates with the new band supporting his latest solo album called Love Will Find a Way. His first solo effort since 2002, which is primarily jazz-tinged cover tunes including the lead Curtis Mayfield-composed single “Billy Jack,” features upper echelon musicians like Chick Corea, Steve Gadd, Christian McBride, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, will.i.am and Bilal (buh-laal). Although this was taped prior, the album was released June 21 and so is available now from your favorite retail, download or streaming providers.
The real meat of the interview though is a discussion of Earth, Wind and Fire’s creative peak and funkiest period, spanning 1974-1977 and including the treasured works for the ages: Open Our Eyes, That’s the Way of the World, Gratitude, Spirit and All N All. Along the way are Bailey’s tributes to late EWF founder and figurehead Maurice White, his brother Verdine White and late composer, arranger and group mentor Charles Stepney.
You’ll have to forgive the technical shortcomings not uncommon when dealing with hotel connectivity. With that, let’s wish TRUTH IN RHYTHM a happy 100th episode and find out all the Reasons why Philip Bailey and Earth, Wind and Fire continue to be so Mighty, Mighty.

Yes, Charles Stepney is known as the DNA of EW&F. Bailey: he would tell Maurice to sh (listen) in the studio, and he would. That says it all.

This was posted on my birthday... Yet another sign of just how deeply EWF and Philip, Maurice and Verdine touched my life and basically played a MAJOR part in me being a professional bassist for the last 25 years. Thank you Mr. Bailey. Maurice, you and the band were moved by God to give his message of enlightenment and expansion of consciousness to the world. Thank you!!! Vincent/NYC

I used to lay on the floor and listen to shinning star at least 50 times before I went outside to play. I also did the same thing with Mighty Mighty the previous year. It wasn't until I grew up that I realized that Phillip Bailey sang the other whole lead vocals on Shinning Star. I enjoyed Phillips gospel songs too. In particular his writing and singing I've had enough. I could go on and on. Before I even knew that he wrote I might as well forget about loving you I also played that song over and over after school. Phillip and Phil Collins; WOW.. Faces was underrated as well. Big fan!!!

Yeah shout out to PB from Cleveland Ohio. I remember when he produced "Might As Well Forget about Loving You " by the then named The Kinsman Dazz whom later became the Dazz Band ...I lived down the street from Ike And Michael Wiley at the time as a young musician I noticed the Kinsman Dazz guitarist Michael Calhoun ' s guitar solo on the above song, to the Style of AL.McKay's /Johnny Graham. ...Only later did I find out that was because PB and Slick had produced The record. ..Just a bit of my connection to that

Indeed he was to'e up tired! The questions weren't very good by asking about emotions on a project from 40 years ago. Sounded like a Wayne's World interview, filled with sentiments of, "We're not worthy!" He made a pretty strong comment about Charles Stepney and SG's response sounded like he wasn't paying attention.

I watched the interview with Larry Dunn enjoyed his perspective on Earth Wind & Fire as the young genius music director, I loved of the interview however, when you interject your opinion on the following albums after "All and All", That's where I disagree with you I personally thought the "I Am" album was a next level album and consideration of the era and style of music of that time Not to mention the musicianship within the playing on the album. Al McKay's rhythm got stronger. The vocals got tighter. The instrumentation and horn section was tight. The writing was next level. The recording was amazing. Sounding. The ideal of the title for me spiritually was even next level. The song was nominated for song of the year against the Doobie Brothers and some other songs that I don't remember. But I know Doobie Brothers won for the song of the year. What a fool believes. But after the love is gone, was an amazing record. Structurally vocally the multiple key changes in the record. It stayed strong through all those keys changes. And the rest of the albums after "I Am", "Faces", "Raise", and "Power Light". I enjoyed all of those albums as well as a true study of all the contributions of this masterful band Earth Wind & Fire. I respect that you have your own opinion about the albums I just don't agree with your opinion about the rest of the bands album's, that's just my own opinion. Thanks for sharing these great interesting interviews with all of my favorite artists in this genre R&B.

Phillip Bailey's choice words "very fruitfull." Yeah it was a very fruitfull time for him. He was making babies with his wife Janet and Jeanette member of the group "The Emotions." He caused so much pain to his wife and family. And Jeanette's family had to be real proud of her having a baby with a married man that has a wife who was also pregnant at the same time mistress Jeanette Hutchison was pregnant. Yeah Phillip Bailey and Jeanette Hutchinson where really two to look up too and be inspired by. Women who like to sleep with other women husband's and men that cheat on their wives are not people I admire no matter how famous they are.

I read your comment and I have to agree, however in the music world it’s all too common, because there is so much temptation. That’s why Maurice never got married, he had also 3 children, by 3 women. But do you like the music or you dislike it for their private life’s?! I would argue that almost all celebrities have affairs while they are married. But it doesn’t make it right.

Yes, I was really disappointed after working long to get this set up and (as usual) doing much prep work ahead of time with the mission to make it as great as possible (as with ALL of these shows). In fairness, he was clearly wiped out doing it from a hotel room. Mainly to blame I think is his management, which did not take enough care to make sure he was well prepared and situated for the interview. Little wonder (behind the scenes TIR scuttlebutt) that manager wanted this interview taken down. I agreed only when a substitute interview could take place and he never saw to it. Dear Mr. Bailey, if this message ever reaches you, the offer stands when you are ready!
