As an avid cruiser that gambles onboard I totally agree with your statement about being "trapped" in a casino! ha! On a 7 day we pick 2 days to gamble and always stick with a budget. The worst thing that has happened to the casino experience on cruises is that now you use your room key/ID in the slot and can access your credit limit right at the slot machine! Yikes!

Not only that but on a recent Holland America cruise, you don't receive a paper voucher anymore when you cash out. The funds are returned to a separate slot balance attached to your player's card/room key. You will have to then go to the cashier cage to get any balance paid out in cash -- I intentionally left less than a dollar on mine at the end of the cruise, it wasn't applied to my primary shipboard account, it just disappeared. That requires much more discipline and willpower to use a lockbox as you will have to get in (an often lengthy) line after each session to physically cash out without that slip of paper in hand to feed into a cash dispenser -- or, more importantly, visually remind you of how much cash is still inside the casino account.

We only spend $100 total on any cruise. And cash out if we even win a small amount! On our honeymoon cruise in 1997, we were raising 3 boys and had limited funds. Hubby played $10 in a slot machine and won $300 on the first pull. We cashed out and used the money to pay down our charges and had enough left over for a quick trip to PA for a friends wedding! Since many folks love to play slots for entertainment suggesting they only play for one day during their cruise might be a tough decision. I recently took an 11- day cruise on celebrity and had a great time. Their casino was great and they had some old school slots as well as a bunch of new ones. I love the old school machines since I know they are some of your favorites too. Anywho I gave myself a budget each day or night I played and stuck to it. Some days a left down and other days a left with a profit. Money management, which is a favorite topic of yours, is the key to having fun playing slots!

I returned from a Royal Carribean cruise 2 weeks ago. I went looking for Dragon Link machines after reading a post about a cruiser winning a Grand Jackpot. Everything you said is spot on from payback % to why some folks think cruise casinos are tighter. If you only play Dragon Link or Huff and Puff, you will not feel like cruise ship slots are any tighter than Vegas. I gamble a lot on both and actually had more success thus far on cruise ships. However because we enjoy cruising a lot more, we definitely feel like we get more value in comps from Cruise vs Vegas. 7 night comped cruise with Royal Caribbean is much more of a value than 4 comped nights at the Venetian (even with some dining credit etc). Especially since cruises are pretty much all inclusive. From experience it takes about the same amount of play to get both. So far we've taken 20 comped cruises with Royal Carribbean over the past 7 years. the amount of $$$ in losses I accrued to get the 20 comp'd cruises is only about 42% of the regular cruise fare had I booked the cruises myself without gambling. So its definitely a win win for us.

Amazing advice! I've been awarded many free cruises from Celebrity through my MGM loyalty membership. They know how to take advantage of captive players - not complaining! I've been upgraded to premium rooms, comped at upcharge dining facilities, and given entry into slot tournaments and much more all centered around the casino. Excellent presentation! I’m doing something similar on another channel about my play strategy. I have 10 comp cruises for 2024 and two more invites to add somehow by doing a back to back. For one year minimum this will be all I do. I personally gamble hard for first two days to establish myself with the casino hosts. I'm glad to know that the slots are the same as on land, but I agree with danwolf that the video poker machines are worse than on land. I have yet to see a 9/6 machine on a cruise ship, but the land-based casino about an hour and a half from me has a whole bank of them. One cruise I was on, I saw one 8/5 machine, and the rest were all 6/4. The 8/5 machine also had keno, so I rarely got to use it. I finally gave up and just play slots on the ship.

When I went into the cruise ship casino, I looked for a machine with a lower jackpot. That way I'd have a better chance of winning. If I went with a higher jackpot machine the max payout rate would be much less frequent. I wasn't after money from the slot machines, I was after the points because I wanted a comped cruise. I found it to cost me less money by going through the casino.

Yes, went on Victory Cruise out of Port Canaveral. I put in $100 and within minutes hit so I cashed out with $976. I still had 4 more hours on the boat. It was cold and raining so I ended up losing $300 of it at Roulette as there was no way to leave. I wish it would have been nice weather to sit on the top deck and stay away from the Roulette ! At least on land, you can leave and drive away. (I hit on the Double Diamond- $1 with 3 max).

Yes the slots adhere to Nevada gaming on cruise ships. That being said, not a single casino in Nevada actually has their paytables and payback percentages set even close to the state allowed minimums. Cruise ships absolutely do set their paytables and payback percentages closer to the state minimums. One can look at VP paytables to see that they are all set to the lower ends. Slot machine payback setting usually mirror. If a casino has crap VP paytables, then their payback percentage on slots will generally be on the lower end as well.

I was on the sky princess 3 weeks ago. I finished the 7 day cruise down, $150. This was my biggest loss i experienced on my last 4 cruises. ( over 5 year span). I was up $600 on day 2, but kept playing. I see more hand pays on a cruise than what i ever see on a land based casino. Each evening i would see at least 3-4 hand pays of $1,200 or more. Biggest win was a guy playing the piggie slot, he hit for $12,000. Plus, I get better offers from the cruise line for being a casino player.

Just got off Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady. While in the casino, the slot attendant was in the machine showing different screens so I stood behind him taking a video.. I can clearly see the payout screen. They were on Dragon link slot… here is what it said. Base Game RTP Range - 87.935% - 91.122% Total Game RTP Range (Base+Reset) - 89.268% - 92.455% Allowed Jurisdictional RTP Range 75% - 100% Base Variation Available …. This has 1 through 11 and each number has a payout with the lowest number having the lowest at 89.935% and then highest number 11 having 92.935% I will say this cruise was the first I left the ship with more money than I brought. Sounds like you have not been in a Carnival casino cruise that visit Grand Turk or Royal Caribbean that visit Cocoa Cay. The ship casino usually open while in port because these ports dont have a local land based casino on the island.

I know that you said that it’s a myth but It always seems that the slots are much looser in the beginning because of the cruise. Last cruise I made a ton of money with lots of strong bonuses on day one and two and then progressively lost some back the next 5 days. Didn’t see a lot of bonuses after the first couple of days. I have noticed that the machines have changed. Lots more of the high volatility games. Much fewer Triple Stars and games like that. So I do get up and leave. Saves me money.

We love our "free" Carnival cruises. Thirteen cruises and only paid for the first one, not including gambling loses of course. I've won and lost over the years. But as a video poker player I can't help but feel they have weighted the cards whether through a third party or whatever. I have enough land based experience and I'm certain of my myth that those machines on Carnival don't act the same. I don't play slots but I was watching my wife and others play and noticed that many of the mchines were running in demo mode on our last cruise. "Demo Mode" was in lights on multiple machines. Which of course only adds to my myth. It's good to hear they are not server based and can't control payouts or turn down the volume of payouts. That's one myth busted anyway....Love what you do trying to keep my mind right.

We love our free suites on Carnival as well. We sail with them 4-5 times/year. The comps are miles better than anything offered from land based casinos. After COVID the land based casinos seem to be much tighter than the cruise ships. We have decided to convert the majority of our recreational traveling to cruising. Moderation is truly they answer to most things. We will be on the Celebration 1/7-1/14/24 and again 3/17-3/24/24. Can't wait!!

The slot machines on the boat don’t have the extra bonus round the new ones have the bonus rounds at the Hard rock casino, Atlantic City Harrahs and I Las Vegas. There is no extra bonus round. When you get the three drums. Nothing happens. You just get paid regularly you don’t get the spinning in the extra rolls that’s how they do the slot machines they don’t give you the extra bonuses.

I won 2 K on a quarter poker machine on a cruise… I spent $300… I spent $400 on a 50 cent slot machine and won a jackpot of $500 on a double diamond. I then went to the crap table and broke even.. I don’t gamble on the ships anymore.

Also big reason from my experience - room charges for slots! That should be illegal. With land casinos, a lot of us know that you’re limited by cash advance limits per day, but there’s not the same limit with cruises. It’s a straight credit charge, which is super dangerous if you can’t control yourself.

Having Nevada gaming regulations in place mean nothing without enforcement. Who inspects the machines to ensure they are programmed correctly? What agency do they answer to when irregularities are discovered?

I just came off a royal cruise ship. At about 3 am I walked through the casino and strangely there were technicians changing out all the wiring and computer boxes on dozens of slot machines. This was on day 3 of the cruise. Why would they be doing that mid cruise? Made me somewhat suspicious of the legitimacy of the gaming
