That was classic English arrogance that offended me so let me be a humourless German: We actually have laws in Germany, get time off, and would offer to go for a beer or ask if there is something we can do and then we would do it. Difference is we offer tea/beer when we truly care and not just because it's standard expectation. And when we want to give more we do, depending on how close we are to the person and our personality. Dont take it so by the letter. Its stereotypes usually and its kind of fun. But IRL germans are really nice online in games for example. @ReeN19952 жыл бұрын
@@daweiisgood2392 As a German I can tell you these stereotypes exist for a reason. I myself can see how people see us as stuck up sometimes. Germans don't really do small talk or fake niceness. Most Germans actually have really dark and self-depracating homour, it's somewhat of an inside joke among Germans to pretend not to understand jokes, especially in the comment section. I'm British. My Italian girlfriend sent me this video. The emotionless thing is very much a public façade the majority of the time. Goes hand in hand with the politeness thing. We live hard and fast by unspoken societal rules, and we don't like it if people break those rules or if we have to even imagine that someone doesn't know them. An example could be someone shouting loud obscenities in a public space. Almost everyone around will tut under their breath, maybe even go so far as to shake their head or raise their eyebrows at someone who catches their gaze. Long story short: at home, Italian her and British him both loud and emotional. In public, she's Italian (no explanation needed!) and I'm reserved and quiet.

Examples of really good British food include Chicken Korma (from Glasgow), Apple Crumble/Pie, Fish and Chips, Victoria Sponge, and Deep Fried Haggis (I've got fully Scottish heritage so maybe this is where that love may come from). I lived in Japan for ten years. I was really surprised about how tea is so important and gravitating in every day life. You come to visit someone, they welcome you with a "chawan" (cup) of tea. You're waiting for the service guy to finish the (free) car washing in a gas, station, they offer you ice tea. You just arrive into a new neighborhood or a buliding, you give your neighbors a package of tea. You go shopping to your local super market and sit to have a snack, you have free hot or ice tea from serving machines...... You go to a café Internet, well, the service includes a free drink bar with a huge variety of teas (earl grey, green, red, black, darjeeling,). And then, of course, you have the old traditional Tea Ceremony.... I think the UK and Japan are the greatest tea consumers in the World.
@geomatt77012 жыл бұрын
What you're saying about tea in Japan is actually the case for most of the Asian continent... we (the brits) got it from China originally and you will also find it heavily engrained in middle eastern cultures too. I was recently in Turkey and I honestly drank more tea there than I would in England.
@lucyfer44202 жыл бұрын
@@geomatt7701 RIGHT. Most Asian countries developed a "tea culture", however none of them compared to the (insanely) sophisticated manners Japanese people consider when it comes to Tea ceremony. 17 (seventeen) regulated steps from boiling water to the moment you sip the tea. Steps include angle allowed to turn the tea cup once on the palm of your hand, appreciation words for the seasonal fine china used, and so on....

I’m a female Brit (South Wales, 31 years old) and I drink very little alcohol personally, but the stereotype of British people drinking a lot is very true as a whole. We do have a problematic relationship with it as a culture I feel. One theory I’ve heard to explain it is that during the time when the UK was very religious, alcohol was very much frowned upon, even to drink in moderation, and combined with our Puritan past hundreds of years ago when anything remotely pleasurable (alcohol, sex, even dancing!) was considered sinful, this has led to a equal swing in the opposite direction. In contrast, in Mediterranean countries like Spain and Greece, people generally appear to consume alcohol frequently but not in the excessive quantities we Brits too. It is said they drink for pleasure, whereas Brits on the whole drink to get drunk. I personally have a Mediterranean sensibility on this subject. I like one, two glasses of alcohol at most and I stop there because after that point for me it is no longer pleasurable.
@SxVaNm3454 жыл бұрын
I think one of the main reasons why alcoholism is a minor issue in the Mediterranean compared to the rest of Europe, is because Southern European and Balkan countries mainly drink wine, while the rest of Europe drinks beer. Wine is 10x stronger then beer, especially if it hasn't been fermented properly, so people get drunk quicker with wine than they do with beer, so they try to limit the amount of wine they have or else their body can literally shut down.

Honestly the drinking stereotype is unbelievably true. I'm 15, been drunk more times than I can remember lollll
@lwaves5 жыл бұрын
It's not even close to be remotely true. It's fair to say that a lot of people go out and get drunk when they can, especially at weekends, but it is far from being close to the majority. The vast majority either control their drink to a certain amount, or don't go out all the time.
@lwaves5 жыл бұрын
@@miacaraxx3642 Jeez, you can really tell you're 15. FYI, I'm perfectly calm and not 'triggered' (lame). That's a typical, stereotyped response from someone of your age. I was hoping for better. You are overreacting to my reply that was simply pointing out your error. You don't have the experience or wisdom to see that yet but you will eventually. Yes, it is a stereotype and one that is not true. It's certainly not "unbelievably true" (your words), which is why I responded. The minimum drinking age is irrelevant and means nothing to this. You claim to be drinking when underage, don't you think people in other countries are doing exactly the same? So, if you're only talking about yourself then that doesn't make it a true stereotype, just because you do it. It's not all about you which is something else you'll learn. How exactly, is this "shit that has nothing to do with me?"
@lwaves5 жыл бұрын
@@miacaraxx3642 You posted on an open forum where everyone can respond if they want. That's how it works Your definition of why triggered is not lame is exactly why it is lame, especially when it's incorrectly used. I didn't expect better, I said I hoped for it. There's a difference. Please read what is written. The people in the video only represent the people in the video, nothing more. You can't accurately state that a large majority of viewers agree with the stereotype, you aren't them and don't know what they think. That's just making stuff up from nothing. I could easily state the opposite point of view and it would be just as meaningless. Yes, you did state an opinion and pointed out the flaws in it. That's all it needed to be, simple and easy, until you further responded with arrogance (which I don't appreciate) and thinking you know how I was reacting. You don't. I felt that a little condescension was deserved after that but not all of it was condescension. The comment about wisdom and experience wasn't condescension, it was a truth that is very applicable. Please learn to understand what you read (not condescension). I never commented about stereotypes being wrong, nor did I put your whole age group into one. I commented that ONE stereotype was wrong (it is) and I put YOU and you alone into a stereo type, nobody else. You're fitting that stereotype right now. Best leave it at that, this isn't going anywhere and in hindsight I should have just ignored your comment.

I have lived in Switzerland for over 20 years and in new York also over 20 years. New yorkers generally don't have any subtlety or bite in their humor (forget sarcasm its a foreign language), so the description in this video seems accurate. On camera, African American humor appeals to me best. Jewish humor always makes fun at cost of others never of themselves. As a matter-effect i just moved to New York I was invited to see a comedian with a few friends one was Jewish. The Jewish comedian started to make fun of his own culture which to sounded normal just as we make fun of our-self in Switzerland But our Jewish acquaintance went ballistic interfering during the show leaving visibly angry calling the comedian antisemitic. I have many mostly orthodox Jewish friends her in NY and i can confirm that behavior is normal in private as well. My favorite female comedian is Bavarian Barbara Schoneberger. Talk show host are as bad in Deutschland as in the US. Since Germany and Italy where the last nations to form in western Europe, one can still see and fell the the differences of the 1100+ municipalities and 300+ states of what is Germany today. All have a different dialect and mentality and humor. Unfortunately just like the person in this video we are bombarded with quotations of 2-dimensionla Anglosachsen shows. I personally think humor is best when its woven into daily life using material one knows and now and then including some stereotypes from other cultures. But there should be at least a 75% to 25% (i am making this up) balance between those two. "The difference between humor and prejudices is who one jokes about predominantly! Not only judge your friends by they treat you but observe how they treat others."

As a Yank, I represent that remark! (That's an American joke.) I thought the British kept all of the good tea for themselves, because we certainly didn't get any of it. Plus, our restaurants never know how to brew it except in the South where they make ice tea pretty well. We finally have Barry's, Yorkshire, and Tetley in the supermarket so I guess things improve over time. Benny Hill is no longer on television and neither is Dave Allen, so I don't think we ever see British humour to misunderstand. We do still get Tracy Ulman though.
