Yes. The mad world is causing these bad dreams. That's not my fault: I reject the mad (as in MAD - this was 1982, remember) world. It's internalised childhood terror of nuclear annihilation. They got it before anyone else did - but WE (i.e.: English 11-years old boys at the time) - grasped the mood and meaning entirely. Still do ;)

It was hastened by the pandemic, but exacerbated by prior economic policy & continuation. The song is about a mad world of course but about loneliness and suicide. Though its upbeat but also dark sounding. It talks about child sadness. in the line "Children wait for the day the feel good". It also talks about life in general.

This is NEW WAVE for sure. I grew up with this as a teen. Black trench coats, bi level hair cuts, black eyeliner and clove cigarettes at the club! New Age is a spiritual movement. I really enjoyed that, loving the 80's music you're doing. Got my mam to get her old 80's records out the loft recently for me. Some suggestions to check out are five star, erasure, Kim Wilde and don't go by Yazoo, I think you'll like that one Lex, so 80's. They're all Brit so you guys may not have heard their stuff. I think Kim Wilde 'kids in America' is well known because I've definitely heard it before.

Bands like Tears for Fears, The FIXX, Bronskie Beat, Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, Siouxsee & the Banshees, New Order and many other bands of that time have an Avante Garde sentiment and just plain coolness that New Wave music represented.

I always put it down to everyone gets along by seeing only what is on the outside, the image we put on. All whilst on the inside we are tormented looking out at the world go by realising that you are not really attached to any of it. is a great analogy for depression.

@@Theutus2 It's not about Donnie Darko. Gary Jules made this version especially for that movie. You may prefer that but the original had a different goal. "It's a bizarre viewpoint to watch people go about their daily routine, having to work for a living when you're sitting in a flat, unemployed," In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Orzabal said of the timeless nature of the song: "'Mad World' hasn't dated because it's expressive of a period I call the teenage menopause, where your hormones are going crazy as you're leaving childhood. Your fingers are on the cliff and you're about to drop off, but somehow you cling on."

It's a very depressing, lyric-wise, song. I imagine Ronnie outside dancing it off is kind of like what Curt Smith inside what's to be, but can't. This song was remade for the movie, Donnie Darko, by Gary Jules and it's incredibly darker in the tone of the music and delivery.

It is a Pop song but with a glimpse of New Wave vibes.. You have to understand the notion of the New Wave movement back then in the late 70ties - mid 80ties = people who were into New Wave music and into New Wave life style/fashion (which was originally just a niche) back then hated every kind of Pop music they simply couldn´t stand Pop music/mainstream music at all. But to be fair many of those NW songs became as popular as like a mainstream pop song. Which was then so to say "a funny contradiction" to the movement in the aftermath becoming that what was hated themselves. AND because NW gained on popularity some groups did then a mixture of Pop and Wave or better said transformed/metamorphed from being originally a New Wave group into a mainstream Pop music group based on the fact that they got contracts from big music labels and the label´s interests was to have big record sales.. and Tears for Fears was one of those groups..and so was Duran Duran and in a very extremly way the group Spandau Ballet who shifted from "leather jacket wearing + coloured hair style New Wave Punk" very rapidly into "tuxedo wearing + straight hair style love ballade singers" to name just a few...those were all "New Wave groups" who transformed into "mainstream pop groups"

The song was written by Roland about being bipolar, which is why the mood's hard to nail down. Lex did a good job figuring it out! The better-known Gary Jules cover is missing half of the experience - it's all depression and no manic.

I would class this as 80's Brit Pop.... which morphed out of early 80's New Wave, which had morphed out late 70's punk, which had morphed out of early 70's Glam Rock.... if you like this, you will probably really like a song called "Enola Gay" by a band called "Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark", which is also in the New Wave/Brit Pop category, but a little more New Wave
