Four Nobel Prize laureates sat down for a panel discussion on one of our main themes of the summit: how can the scientific community generate more trust in science? Laureates Maria Ressa, Richard Roberts, Martin Chalfie and David MacMillan, discuss how the scientific community need to address the problems of science literacy and critical thinking and the strategies needed to help preserve facts. As laureate Martin Chalfie, advises, ‘We need to build on public trust. We need to work with the communities.’
About Nobel Prize Summit 2023:
How can we build trust in truth, facts and scientific evidence so that we can create a hopeful future for all?
Misinformation is eroding our trust in science and runs the risk of becoming one of the greatest threats to our society today.
This year’s Nobel Prize Summit which brought together laureates, leading experts and the public in a conversation on how we can combat misinformation, restore trust in science and create a hopeful future.

I would like to emphasize in the importance of organizing more Graduate Associations in all Universities as part of social media networks (thank you Rose Mary). This is vital today for credibility and to confront some media outlets whose only goal seems to be purely economical. Having a “degree” means that the person is generally more consistent, dedicated and professional in that particular area of knowledge than the average “blogger” that does not have gone through the same level of rigor and achievements. Graduate Associations could lead to match both, the resources with the ideas and solutions.

the weakest link is communicating effectively the application of science in our lives…and to make science VISIBLE in the day to day life. for example very few people i think realize that the science of measurement - metrology - has a big impact on their health, on the environment and could help protect both people and ecosystems if put to good use.

30:34 what if there was a scientific shared multidisciplinary work/social space and you ran it as your own think tank and then have a shared intellectual property department and you can sell what you want to who you want for whatever price is appropriate with a decent profit for yourselves and reinvest in your research.

People don't trust out of nothing. Honesty, respect and reliability comes first. Science results may be truth but if the environment where science is made and how it is applied is not done honestly and with the respect toward other people (ethically), scientist and thus science will not be trusted.

26:35 yeah do it like drug dealers - peddle science at the park kind of near the playground. Give out some free science on Saturdays or Sundays, get them hooked and they will be back for more!
