I do not think anybody will ever get tired of the "soul brothers". That is one of the signature scenes in Airplane. I saw Airplane forty years ago, and I still enjoy it.

Still one of the best comedies ever made. They really made sure there was a gag in every scene and the writing was incredible. We are lightyears away today from this quality gag writing and acting. No wonder why movies like "Airplane" are still such fan favorites.

*Vintage movie scene.* We laughed our asses off because a lot of us watched channel 9 and channel 5 so we knew that was Mrs. Leave it To Beaver. This was around 1980-82 The civil rights stuff had calmed down and we were united as a nation for a few years thanks to movies and music.

And then came the liberal marxis SJW clowns and started to burn it all down to make people hate each other again, with victimization, forced diversity, Critical race theory propaganda becoming forced learning material in school and all that stuff that divided people again into their races and skincolors and ripping people away from each other >_< I swear.... this is why we can't have nice things.. I just wish we all could be just this cool again as we were in the early 80s.

It’s amazing what weird places this scene has gotten to. I’m a 90’s kid from Hungary, a country just trying to crawl out of communism back then. We probably had about 7 black people in the whole country (by now it must have risen up to at least 10!), so when dubbing the movie the translators had a hard time finding anything the people could associate this talk with. It ended up being some invented semi-hooligan, semi-street kid talk with a fair amount of gibberish. That’s all we got back then. And EVEN SO it worked, I grew up with this movie as well, we can (to this day) quote any line from Airplane with my siblings and basically continue quoting it to the last line of the movie. We know it all by heart. Now over 30, speaking English, understanding the context it’s twice as funny. As non-PC as these movies were, I would be a much poorer person without Airplane, Naked Gun, Jane Austen’s Mafia, Hot Shot, Loaded Weapon, etc. Ah, and Maya Rudolph must have been like my little sister on the playground telling other 5 year olds “looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking…”. I’ll send this video to her so that she knows she’s not alone. 😂

It is politically correct though... If it was just plain old racist, it wouldn't be funny. The joke is in the translation, both the subtitles, and the whitest of the white old lady who inexplicably is down with black culture. If a racist is sat at home laughing and thinking "don't black people sound funny!" then the absolute geniusness of the joke has completely gone over their head.

@ash_yt0

You must be really fun at parties. Do you not see any irony in whining about modern comedy while complaining that other people lack a sense of humour? The jive scene is perfectly fine the way it is for today's audience. If they kept the original script where it was written by white jewish guys then maybe not so much. It's very ahead of its time that they got actual black actors in who knew the lingo to rewrite the scene for them, and then it effectively turned it into a joke about white people's view of black people. The jive talk presented as a "language" and also contrasted with pearl-clutching "white" subtitles like "Golly!" is why the scene is still absolutely hysterical to this day.
