Probably some kind of sensor in the cord that measures resistance when you complete the circuit then sends a signal to a relay to activate the light, or it could be someone hiding in the closet with a remote xD but the first one would be better as it assures when the mark messes with it it will always work. Not too mention it could be done fairly easily with some electronic parts and a entire production crew who could just hire a electrician.
