Awesome, Peter. You have exhibited extreme patience in showing how to clean a circuit board. It gives great information for novices and a refresher course for ticketed hams. Many thanks for sharing this information for others to get benefit from.

Peter, As far as I am concerned your repair wins the beauty contest. But the real beauty is your superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. That is why your subscribers always look forward to seeing another video posted by you. Happy new year to you and your family and I look forward to another year of interesting videos from my mentor across the world.

Thank you so much Peter! I got a TS-850S recently as my first rig and have been enjoying it until it started acting up the other day. Someone recommended that I take a look at that board. I am glad I did! It is in much worse shape than the one you repair here. Your video was very useful in helping determine if this repair is something I want to tackle myself. Cheers!

Peter, based upon this video I bought the LCR meter and I am so glad I did. The meter is a great addition to my workbench (I'm an electronics engineer ) and also for my Ham radio use. I just got a TS-850SAT from a fellow ham friend and I plan to watch this video over so I can remember all the details to check out this rig. Thank you so much for all your wonderful and very educational videos. Now figure out how to get the software that came with the meter to work ...

THIS GUY IS AWESOME.. WATCHED SEVERAL OF HIS VIDEOS SOME SEVERAL TIMES. I OWN A TS-850S. MY AUDIO WAS SO VERY LOW COULD NOT HEAR. SO I REMOVED THE IF BOARD CHECKED MY C187 AND FOUND IT TO HAVE NO CAPACITANCE. MY METER SAID 0.00 SO I REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE EXACTLY 470UF AT 25V. NOW HAVE ROBUST AUDIO . THANK YOU PETER...

Nice video, Peter! NICE JOB OF SAVING THAT BOARD! You are a real pro! Your customers are lucky to have you! I see a lot of the lazy repairman's nip off old the leads and solder the new ones to them, use thru hole on SMD, and they don't ever clean up that corrosive caustic electrolyte mess either. I just got a TS690 and am hoping I do NOT find a corrosive mess like that, and I pray it's not encroaching into those unobtainium chips. We call changing all the electrolytic caps, "Shotgunning" the radio, or amplifier, television, compressor limiter, or whatever happens to be open and on the bench at the time. It like we use a shotgun to spray in ALL new electrolytic capacitors, to eliminate problems, just like you would with a sawed off shotgun, and a spray bunch of outlaws with lead. Once you have it open there is NO EXCUSE for NOT CHANGING THOSE AND GETTING RID OF THEM BEFORE THEY FURTHER DAMAGE THE BOARD. You have the radio open, the boards are exposes, the soldering iron is hot, the parts bin is right there, and there is JUST NO EXCUSE! I worked for a real shyster who used to tell me to "leave those questionable parts in there, so the customer will return in 2,3,4, 6, 8 weeks, and we can charge him another $150 bench fee." I have some old aggressive cleaners that take the corrosion off, when nothing else will, but usually the solder mask comes off too. It is a method of last resort. Fiber glass abrasive pens, or even the old very abrasive ink erasers, kind of work for scrubbing off the corrosion. Yes, we do call that solder braid. I have bare copper braid, and a tinned copper braid impregnated with flux. I also have PCB repair kits with foil, and catalyzed thermo-set two part epoxy adhesive. Chloronated brake parts cleaner will dissolve the solder mask, so you can get under that soldermask, but our EPA has taken chloronated solvents off the market. The stuff also takes the corrosion off too, but I can't buy it anymore. It is illegal now. I have a few tiny bits saved from small canisters, bottles, and spray cans. I poured it into silicon gasketed whiskey flasks, because it will evaporate from the original cans. I saved it for emergency uses, like this. I used to be able to drive down to Mexico and buy the stuff, but no more.

Great job on a very difficult problem. People overlook vintage radio capacitors. In audio equipment of vintage age they can be restored to their former glory with a few component replacements. Surface mount is not for the newbie or the faint of heart. Great video and tutorial. Excellent as usual.

WHEN I REPLACED THESE CAPACITORS MY SOLDERING WAS POOR. SO I ORDER RADIAL CAPS. I BOUGHT ABOUT 20 THEY WERE CHEAP. USED 25 VOLTS. CHECKED EACH CAPS AND USED THE ONES CLOSEST TO THE 10UF. I HAD TO DO SOME SOLDERING THAT WOULD MAKE PETER CRINGE IM SURE. BUT I CHECK EACH ONE IN THE CIRCUIT FOR SHORTS. I HAVE A WORKING CAR BOARD ALL NEW CAPS...THANKS PETER FOR GIVING ME CONFIDENCE...

Great video! Replacing electrolytic capacitors (even before they start leaking) is a good preventative measure in any old radio. I had a TS-450S on the bench that was doing "strange things" when transmitting... distorted audio, ALC issues. I replaced all the electrolytic capacitors with quality Rubicon 105 DegC and it was like a new radio!

Good job as aways . I have repaired a number of these and read up on some history of this , apparently Kewood got a bunch of counterfeit caps in there earlier production numbers , there was a ser. # where they found & used known to be good caps , that also coincided an upgraded chip set , as I remember 6632 new numbers . I now own 3 of the 850's , one early production & 2 later production , they sound so good on recv. & trans. that I resist selling for newer rig .

Thanks to this video, I took on this capacitor replacement project. Plenty of leakage, but the rig was still working. You should recognize that about 500 views of this video were me, as I gained confidence... 😉 I couldn't get my copper as shiny as yours, but the acid is gone and the board has been covered with solder resist again (looks like a two year old's coloring book unfortunately... 😬). The radio powered up again, so I'm optimistic it will continue for a while into the future! I'm wondering how you know which caps should be proactively replaced elsewhere in the radio? I asked this question in a more recent 850S video too - hopefully you will see one or the other! I wouldn't have attempted this without your KZbin help, so a big thank you!

Nice video as usually, little bit long :) but it's OK. My suggestion is to apply some sodium bicarbonate to this board to neutralize acid residue. After that clean it using IPA and after that soldering and apply plastic. Only to prevent that residue of acid from capacitor can still damage the copper on the PCB. I think mechanical cleaning using fiberglass brush is not enough.

Good video , I've also owned many 850's over the years , I've also got a similar video of replacing the caps on the carrier board , Recently I acquired another 850 I replaced the caps in that to , Carrier PCB, Display PCB and the couple around the audio amp as these can be problematic as well , I've only just had in a replacement carrier PCB for the 850 , It does away with the four DDS chips and has a single purpose programmes IC to do the job if the four DDS chips ... That's also in my site ... Regards de Gw0wvl 👍

How has your experience with been with that new replacement PCB carrier board for the TS-850S been? I see them for sale out of Ukraine and Italy but can not find any reviews on their performance. I think for my situation I would like to purchase one but would just like to know what some thoughts were on it. Thanks!

Nice job Peter! What did you finally use to get down to the copper level on the PCB? You mentioned sand paper so I'm just curious as the abrasive fiberglass pen can only go so far. BTW, you have to be careful with those pens as the fiberglass strands that come off of the pen can be really nasty if you happen to transfer some into your eye or get under the skin of your fingers as they can migrate under the skin's surface (not a good thing!). You can see the very tiny "whiskers" on the board in the video after you used the pen. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 73 - Dino KL0S

Very nicely done, sir! I'm glad you ended up replacing the bodged capacitor as well. Just one question: It appears that the replacement capacitors are 16v rated like the failed originals. Would it have been better to replace them with 25v capacitors to prevent this sort of damage from occurring again?
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 9 жыл бұрын
+DainBramage Hi Dain, thanks for feed-back! Well I don't think that this caps were failing due to a voltage overload as we are only dealing with 5V on the PCB it is rather more a production error so 16V is more than okay. 73 Peter
@N1RKW
@N1RKW 9 жыл бұрын
+TRXBench That makes sense. My mistake was assuming that it was a 13.8V circuit. I agree with you, 16V caps should be more than adequate for a 5V circuit, especially since you are using good quality replacements.

Peter, Excellent video. I subscribed about half year ago and have finally watched all your videos. I have learned a few techniques I can put to use in trouble shooting equipment. Also learned much from Paul Carlson's channel. I see how it is sometimes difficult to work on equipment. I'm surprised the electronics industry does not have a chemical to stop the corrosion from the electrolyte in electrolytic capacitors. You now have me worried. I am starting back into amateur radio after being off the air for 30 years. I recently upgraded to General. I have a elderly (1980) Yaesu FT-901DM that I have not used for 30 years. Do you know of any problems that may occur with that vintage radio before I apply power?
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 9 жыл бұрын
+Donald D'Egidio Hi Donald, thanks you very much for the kind words! Well the question is if the industry really is interested in a chemical most likely they are more interested in selling new products. Oh yes be careful taking old gear back into service after a long perido. Watch my video Tutorial -How to take a Cobra back into service after 25 years- for more details.. 73

+TRXBench Peter, Used the tutorial with the light bulbs and the FT901DM powers up. Receive functions seem to be OK, but when I try to transmit into dummy load I get no plate current meter reading and no PO meter reading. An external wattmeter does show power output. I do not have the equipment to perform any serious diagnostics. Don't know if I should spend any money getting it repaired. I have limited income and wish I could do it myself.

Peter, I have a Flex1500 that will be in use soon. Still collecting all the bits, but it is only 5 watts output. The 901DM was 100 watts. My triband beam is old and needs maintenance. Don't have any other antenna now. I have a ZS6BKW (G5RV variant) multi-band dipole to install, but I need help because of low back pain. I will eventually get it up and back on the air. :-)

Hello Again ! I wonder if it is possible, having the same values available, to replace those e-caps with tantalum caps, these will not leak ! What can you tell about that possibility ? 73!
@TRXLab
@TRXLab 8 жыл бұрын
+CT1ELP Hi Pedro, well this question is more complex as one think. In the past we had the rule of thump Tantal caps only for devices with batteries or in parts of a circuit with NO low impedance. Today Tantal caps have significantly improved but even in newer technical data and application sheets you find: It is important to ensure that the voltage across the terminals of the capacitor never exceeds the specified voltage rating. In the case of low impedance circuits, the capacitor is likely to be stressed by current surges. In circuits which undergo rapid charge or discharge a protective resistor of 1Ω/V is recommended. If this is impossible, a derating factor of up to 70% should be used. So you see it still has to be considered very carefully and the production costs increase if you put it in a low impedance portion of the circuit... Hope that helps as explanation. 73's
