As usual another great video, with that I have to say I am highly disappointed in the dumbing down of amateur radio. I really can't believe some of the equipment these hams are sending you in for repair. these problems are common and something that every ham radio operator should be able to repair in their sleep. For example the icom 7000 that someone sent you in that had a blown fuse, a ham radio operator who can't diagnose a blown fuse and replace it just needs to turn in their ham radio license because they don't deserve it. likewise any ham radio operator with a general class license and above who can't perform a simple frequency alignment on their radio needs to turn in their ham radio license because they don't deserve it. Even though I have a complete electronics lab, with spectrum analyzers vector network analyzers and service monitors You don't need any of that equipment to bring your transceiver back on frequency. It's very simple on something like an FT847, you simply tune into WWV. And switch between upper side band and lower side band, the tone should remain the same. If the tone shifts then your radio is off frequency. simply tweak the reference oscillator adjustment a tiny bit while switching between upper side band and lower side band until the tone sounds the same between them. That will get you very close and is more than adequate for 99.99% of applications. of course I'm hesitant to mention this because some goofy ham will use a metal screwdriver to do this. You should be using a plastic diddle Stick when adjusting a reference oscillator while the equipment is powered on. anyhow good job.

I just got my 847 repaired. It had very bad HF reception, unusable. When I got it back the tech did some mods including the power switch. There was a short in the radio causing the poor HF reception. The volume is much louder too.

The 847 is bad designed. RX is not good blocking signals and there is no option for TCXO to get a stable transmitter for longer transmissions and heat up! Kuhne Elektronik have a mod with a heating element mounted on the reference Xtal. This helps a bit. 73s

I assume, that this XTAL is at least a temperature compensated one (TCXO). An oven controlled (OCXO) would be the best of course.

Got a question after watching this video on the FT847. I have an FT847, when observing WWV/WWVH on 10Mhz, or any of the other time frequencies, I notice when in SSB in order to match tones with WWV that my frequency readout displays 10.000.038 when matching between AM and SSB.Can I use WWV's signal to adjust the master oscillator since I do not have test equipment available such as your lab has?
