It's probably not as dark or they have light coming from behind the camera that isn't being picked up

The cameras are calibrated for the bright studio lights, and cameras aren't capable of adjusting to different light levels the same way the human eye can without manual input, so while everyone's eyes can adjust quickly the camera would only see pitch black. (Technically, they are capable, but it's very imprecise and in professional filming environments no one would ever leave the automatic functions on). Getting more technical for a second, the human eye actually has a significantly larger range than cameras when it comes to brightness levels. That's why when using cameras in bright sunlight/in a dark room, you can see fine but parts of the image will be either washed out or pitch black. The human eye is still miles ahead of camera technology when it comes to versatility and quick adjustments.
