Don’t worry about it too much. I’m in the process of training my service dog - she’ll probably be fully trained in the next couple of months. The biggest problem is when you tell people about the proper way to interact with service dogs and they purposely ignore it because of their own wants. Now you know! Thanks for recognizing it but you really don’t need to stress too much about it long term. And now you also will know how to interact yourself and for your kid in the future :)

I know everyone is talking about the service dog,but I thought I’d add that the person is most likely angry because that happens. All. The. Time. And people are so mean when they’re told no. Eventually it becomes an automatic response to be frustrated when people start pushing you on it. If kid came up and started messing with your cane or wheelchair you’d be freaked out. If the mom came up and got mad at you for it, instead of parenting their child and explaining why they can’t do that, you’d be angry too.

Hard to tell on this one because apparently there were signs all over the place saying not to touch the dog. I would hope if the mom is getting this butthurt, it's because the owner was also pretty rude about it. But that's definitely not necessarily the case, either. Some parents get incredibly uptight about anything involving their children - so much so that if you told a kid not to lean too far over the Brooklyn Bridge guardrail, there's a solid chance that some Karen parent would admonish you to mind your own business and give you a "how dare you speak to MY CHILD" harangue long before worrying that little Porter was about to taste the East River.

I’ve worked with service animals and in certain states in the US it is illegal to pet a working service animal. Service dogs are trained to specifically alert and guide their owners with many different medical problems from blindness, heart problems, panic attacks to schizophrenic episodes and so on. Strangers interacting with them with their vest on can take them out of “work” mode and the distraction can be dangerous for the owner. Also this is aimed at the babies mother, obviously a little kid wouldn’t know that and it’s up to her to handle the situation appropriately. Just wanted to share why it’s important to not pet the working pups :)

Not sure if Cody reads comments, but I'm a service dog handler and heavily rely on ADA law to protect both me and my medical alert dog in public spaces. I always say "Sorry, you can't pet her right now because she's working" and that usually gets through to people, but if someone tried to argue with me the way that lady did I would 100% stand up for myself and my right to be in public with my medical aid. If my dog is being distracted by people touching her 24/7 she can very easily miss her alerts (it's happened before, and hospital trips are expensive and unnecessary when we could've just been left well enough alone).

I seriously hope that he reads these comments. I'm genuinely upset that he's spreading an opinion like this on a platform this large. The attitude he has about service dogs does real harm to people trying to live independent lives with the help of medical equipment that happens to be in the shape of a dog. I am so tired of dealing with these people every time I want to go out of my house. I want people to leave me and my dog alone.

Yes! I saw a man in a mall have a seizure and get hurt and need an ambulance because some absolute cretins brought their nasty brats (they were yelling at the man that he wasn't blind) up to his service dog to harass it. The dog was so distracted (trying to hide from being grabbed and shrieked at) that she didn't catch it and didn't alert him. Without that alert to tell him to get down he just fell right over in to a display rack. The metal pegs on it hurt him really bad and he got hurt when he hit the floor too. There was SO MUCH BLOOD. I watched the whole ordeal cause a nurse swooped in to help and asked me to sit with her baby. It was so horrible and the disgusting people who caused it immediately ran when he fell. Dude even picked up their smallest kid so they could get away faster. I don't know if they got apprehended.

No one’s blaming the kid. Here is how the interaction could of and should of went: Kid runs up and tries to pet service animal. Handler says “no.” Parent comes to collect their kid and apologizes. “I’m sorry, we’re still learning.” Parent reinforces that you need to ask to pet and that service dogs are working and they have a job, they aren’t like regular dogs. Parent and kid leave. There. No screaming. Just take the L with grace and make it a learning experience for your kid. Bad take for several reasons, Cody

My understanding is that Cody was just saying to the little 4 year old girl, seeing a service dog is probably like seeing any other dog and that she'd want to pet it. Of course you should teach your kids to be cautious, but 90% of the time they don't listen. Little kids don't work the same as teenagers and adults, the mum could've turned around to grab something off the shelf for 2 seconds and the little girl would've 100% been able to slip by and run up to the service dog without her parent even noticing. Cody was just saying there wasn't enough context to know what had happened, and that if the situation was such that the little girl had run up to the dog to pet it without her mum knowing and gotten yelled at by the owner then it was understandable that the girl's mum would be upset. Any mother would be if a stranger had just shouted at your very young child, whatever the reason. He also clearly stated that if the situation was such that the mother had gone up to the owner and ask permission to pet her service dog and the owner refused and the mother then doubled-down and got upset at the owner, then the mother would be completely in the wrong.

Especially because by distracting the dog their own life is put at risk. It's completely reasonable to sternly state no in response to someone threatening virtually turning off your medical device and while it would be confusing for the child I think it's the parent's responsibility to use that opportunity to educate their child. Not to exhaust and argue with someone who may likely have a heart condition, seizures, etc.

The biggest thing to remember about service dogs is that when they are working, they are not considered pets, or even animals really. They are a piece of medical equipment. Petting or distracting a working service dog would kinda of be like grabbing someones cane as a joke, or pushing someones wheelchair in a random direction without being asked, or fiddling with the machinery in someones hospital room. Its incredibly invasive, scary, and can possibly have immediate consequences to the owners health. Pets are amazing, and its wonderful when your pet can make other people/kids happy, but a working service dog is not a pet. That mother should have used the opportunity to teach her kid about other peoples medical/health boundaries instead of scolding the service dog user.

People with service dogs, and the service dogs themselves, get harassed a lot, Cody. It’s not safe for a child to approach and touch any animal they don’t know, because that puts the child and animal at risk. Even more so for a service animal, because the animal is literally doing a job, and distracting the service animal puts its owner at risk because it impairs the animal from doing its job. I think it’d be the same as a kid trying to use a stranger’s wheelchair as a go-kart, or using someone’s inhaler as a kazoo. The kid might not know better, but they’re interfering with tools and accommodations meant to assist someone with a disability. It’s up to the parent to correct their child, not harass the service animal owner by saying they should let a small child interfere with the owner’s health and safety. ESAs can literally just be your cat. a hamster. anything. not regulated, not allowed in public spaces (where animals aren't allowed but SDs are), don't perform life saving functions, etc. they are completely different things and he seriously needs to educate himself.

The ADA gov website in the US has all the legality posted there. NEVER pet a service dog, distracting a service dog can be a misdemeanor in many states. It distracts them from their job (medical alert) which can lead to the owner being injured or dying in some cases. Service dogs aren't pets, they're legally considered vital medical equipment. However, even if the dog wasn't a service dog, no one is entitled to pet your dog, and dog owners shouldn't have to drop what they're doing anytime someone wants to interact with their pet. Additionally, kids can be rough with dogs because they don't know better. If a parent isn't teaching their child to ask permission before petting a random dog, they're also probably not teaching other ways to respectfully and safely interact with an unknown animal. Dog owners aren't obligated to put their pet at risk for some random person's pleasure.

Cody, I have a service dog. Under ADA law they are medical equipment, not pets. Therefore it is 100% illegal to mess with them in any way, even petting. It is life threatening to the handler when their dog is distracted. The thing is, we get takes like this all the time. And I really wish someone with this big of an audience and reach could make a small difference by explaining why it is so wrong to do something like the lady did in that video. It puts people like me in serious danger by preventing the dog from doing it's job. Even if it seems harmless, a service dog being distracted can easily lead to undetected panic attacks, seizures, blood sugar spikes, and a ton more issues that the handler will be unprepared for, which can lead to further issues (or even death for some handlers) It's not being overdramatic. It's people with disabilities trying to just exist as a normal person in this world without their life saving medical equipment being taken from them.
@madeleine61509

Part of me honestly hopes that the Karen did actually get in contact with a lawyer, and that they called her out for discrimination against someone with a disability and distracting a service dog, as well as pointing out that she would absolutely not have a leg to stand on in court. "You distracted a service animal" and "you verbally attacked a disabled person for their disability" ARE crimes, meanwhile "you were slightly rude to my child" is NOT a crime. A service animal being distracted by a child is potentially life threatening. A child not being able to pet ONE dog they saw is not life threatening. Still, I find this trash take to be really disappointing from someone like Cody.

And, genuinely, nobody over the age of 5 should ever need to be told it's rude. 2 is the correct age to begin teaching kids that running at animals and petting them without permission is a big fat nope. A bit later on is when you add in additional lessons like that it's simply very rude to do certain things, no matter how much you want to. By 5 every child has experienced something that felt rude to them and they are capable of recalling how that felt when they are taught that something feels rude to others. Many children can grasp that part of it even earlier than 5.

Lol. Pharmacies are soooo incredibly shady and unreliable so I can't feel bad for you tbh. The gaslighting is unreal. People get treated like they are unreasonable just for expecting the pharmacy to actually fill their prescriptions in a timely manner. The Walgreens pharmacy I go to has multiple lawsuits against it currently (no, none from me) for their misconduct. Walgreens in particular was publicly in trouble for *allowing* their pharmacy employees to lie and withhold birth control pills from their customers. Look it up. That happened to me back when it was on the news and STILL periodically happens to me now both at Walgreens and CVS so don't act like pharmacies are innocent. A LOT of the complaints are about actual misconduct and are completely valid.

@@Lindseyisloony I work at a pharmacy that does not withhold medications from people and we fill fairly fast… so I rarely if ever hear of those types of complaints. In my experience, people would become upset when we could not fill medications because they are on backorder (manufacturer is at fault) or because of problems they have with their own insurance. I don’t agree that a customer should ever act this way towards pharmacy employees… or even act that way towards another human. Also, I would consider looking for a different pharmacy that does not have lawsuits against them!
