Don’t worry about it too much. I’m in the process of training my service dog - she’ll probably be fully trained in the next couple of months. The biggest problem is when you tell people about the proper way to interact with service dogs and they purposely ignore it because of their own wants. Now you know! Thanks for recognizing it but you really don’t need to stress too much about it long term. And now you also will know how to interact yourself and for your kid in the future :)

Yeah and it's so incredibly gross and concerning that Cody thinks there's any excuse for a FIVE year old to not know that rule yet! TWO is when children are capable of starting to comprehend that lesson. The kid in the video isn't anywhere near five but they are %1000 over the age where they should have learned not to do that. I know everyone is talking about the service dog,but I thought I’d add that the person is most likely angry because that happens. All. The. Time. And people are so mean when they’re told no. Eventually it becomes an automatic response to be frustrated when people start pushing you on it. If kid came up and started messing with your cane or wheelchair you’d be freaked out. If the mom came up and got mad at you for it, instead of parenting their child and explaining why they can’t do that, you’d be angry too.

Hard to tell on this one because apparently there were signs all over the place saying not to touch the dog. I would hope if the mom is getting this butthurt, it's because the owner was also pretty rude about it. But that's definitely not necessarily the case, either. Some parents get incredibly uptight about anything involving their children - so much so that if you told a kid not to lean too far over the Brooklyn Bridge guardrail, there's a solid chance that some Karen parent would admonish you to mind your own business and give you a "how dare you speak to MY CHILD" harangue long before worrying that little Porter was about to taste the East River.

The mom is setting a bad example for their child. Someone told you no and firmly set their boundaries. Instead of listening and abiding by those boundaries, she immediately argued with the person and tried to make them feel bad. This could teach the child to not respect consent and boundaries, which is awful.

I’ve worked with service animals and in certain states in the US it is illegal to pet a working service animal. Service dogs are trained to specifically alert and guide their owners with many different medical problems from blindness, heart problems, panic attacks to schizophrenic episodes and so on. Strangers interacting with them with their vest on can take them out of “work” mode and the distraction can be dangerous for the owner. Also this is aimed at the babies mother, obviously a little kid wouldn’t know that and it’s up to her to handle the situation appropriately. Just wanted to share why it’s important to not pet the working pups :)

Yes! I saw a man in a mall have a seizure and get hurt and need an ambulance because some absolute cretins brought their nasty brats (they were yelling at the man that he wasn't blind) up to his service dog to harass it. The dog was so distracted (trying to hide from being grabbed and shrieked at) that she didn't catch it and didn't alert him. Without that alert to tell him to get down he just fell right over in to a display rack. The metal pegs on it hurt him really bad and he got hurt when he hit the floor too. There was SO MUCH BLOOD. I watched the whole ordeal cause a nurse swooped in to help and asked me to sit with her baby. It was so horrible and the disgusting people who caused it immediately ran when he fell. Dude even picked up their smallest kid so they could get away faster. I don't know if they got apprehended.

Not sure if Cody reads comments, but I'm a service dog handler and heavily rely on ADA law to protect both me and my medical alert dog in public spaces. I always say "Sorry, you can't pet her right now because she's working" and that usually gets through to people, but if someone tried to argue with me the way that lady did I would 100% stand up for myself and my right to be in public with my medical aid. If my dog is being distracted by people touching her 24/7 she can very easily miss her alerts (it's happened before, and hospital trips are expensive and unnecessary when we could've just been left well enough alone).

I seriously hope that he reads these comments. I'm genuinely upset that he's spreading an opinion like this on a platform this large. The attitude he has about service dogs does real harm to people trying to live independent lives with the help of medical equipment that happens to be in the shape of a dog. I am so tired of dealing with these people every time I want to go out of my house. I want people to leave me and my dog alone.

Not yet. He apologized already sorta but it won't actually hit him until this follows him for a while. Which it will, because there is a big difference between a bad take that happened because of an innocent lack of understanding and making himself look like an airplane hanger sized ahole because he clearly has never considered disabled people's needs or wellbeing. it's EVERY adult's responsibility to NOT be completely oblivious to disabled people and their needs and rights and the law thankfully backs that up. "I didn't know" isn't a legal defense and judges find people who have takes like his to be abhorrent.

My understanding is that Cody was just saying to the little 4 year old girl, seeing a service dog is probably like seeing any other dog and that she'd want to pet it. Of course you should teach your kids to be cautious, but 90% of the time they don't listen. Little kids don't work the same as teenagers and adults, the mum could've turned around to grab something off the shelf for 2 seconds and the little girl would've 100% been able to slip by and run up to the service dog without her parent even noticing. Cody was just saying there wasn't enough context to know what had happened, and that if the situation was such that the little girl had run up to the dog to pet it without her mum knowing and gotten yelled at by the owner then it was understandable that the girl's mum would be upset. Any mother would be if a stranger had just shouted at your very young child, whatever the reason. I think I get what you're saying but I disagree, heaps of people talk about having service dogs and not only are they exhausted from the disability that they require the dog for they're exhausted from this happening constantly. Especially because by distracting the dog their own life is put at risk. It's completely reasonable to sternly state no in response to someone threatening virtually turning off your medical device and while it would be confusing for the child I think it's the parent's responsibility to use that opportunity to educate their child. Not to exhaust and argue with someone who may likely have a heart condition, seizures, etc.

People with service dogs, and the service dogs themselves, get harassed a lot, Cody. It’s not safe for a child to approach and touch any animal they don’t know, because that puts the child and animal at risk. Even more so for a service animal, because the animal is literally doing a job, and distracting the service animal puts its owner at risk because it impairs the animal from doing its job. I think it’d be the same as a kid trying to use a stranger’s wheelchair as a go-kart, or using someone’s inhaler as a kazoo. The kid might not know better, but they’re interfering with tools and accommodations meant to assist someone with a disability. It’s up to the parent to correct their child, not harass the service animal owner by saying they should let a small child interfere with the owner’s health and safety. I don’t blame the owner for getting heated at the mother’s ignorance and ableism. It’s likely not the first time she’s had to deal with people like that, and unfortunately won’t be the last.

The biggest thing to remember about service dogs is that when they are working, they are not considered pets, or even animals really. They are a piece of medical equipment. Petting or distracting a working service dog would kinda of be like grabbing someones cane as a joke, or pushing someones wheelchair in a random direction without being asked, or fiddling with the machinery in someones hospital room. Its incredibly invasive, scary, and can possibly have immediate consequences to the owners health. Pets are amazing, and its wonderful when your pet can make other people/kids happy, but a working service dog is not a pet. That mother should have used the opportunity to teach her kid about other peoples medical/health boundaries instead of scolding the service dog user.

You’re being ignorant and blaming someone for something they’re not doing, which you’d know if you actually tried to understand what they meant. And honestly, you’re the one who’s very off-putting by ignoring everything they’re saying just to misrepresent them and accuse them of something they’re not saying. Service dogs are living creatures with rights who deserve to be treated well the way any other living thing does. And, genuinely, nobody over the age of 5 should ever need to be told it's rude. 2 is the correct age to begin teaching kids that running at animals and petting them without permission is a big fat nope. A bit later on is when you add in additional lessons like that it's simply very rude to do certain things, no matter how much you want to. By 5 every child has experienced something that felt rude to them and they are capable of recalling how that felt when they are taught that something feels rude to others. Many children can grasp that part of it even earlier than 5.

Cody, I have a service dog. Under ADA law they are medical equipment, not pets. Therefore it is 100% illegal to mess with them in any way, even petting. It is life threatening to the handler when their dog is distracted. The thing is, we get takes like this all the time. And I really wish someone with this big of an audience and reach could make a small difference by explaining why it is so wrong to do something like the lady did in that video. It puts people like me in serious danger by preventing the dog from doing it's job. Even if it seems harmless, a service dog being distracted can easily lead to undetected panic attacks, seizures, blood sugar spikes, and a ton more issues that the handler will be unprepared for, which can lead to further issues (or even death for some handlers) It's not being overdramatic. It's people with disabilities trying to just exist as a normal person in this world without their life saving medical equipment being taken from them.

Part of me honestly hopes that the Karen did actually get in contact with a lawyer, and that they called her out for discrimination against someone with a disability and distracting a service dog, as well as pointing out that she would absolutely not have a leg to stand on in court. "You distracted a service animal" and "you verbally attacked a disabled person for their disability" ARE crimes, meanwhile "you were slightly rude to my child" is NOT a crime. A service animal being distracted by a child is potentially life threatening. A child not being able to pet ONE dog they saw is not life threatening. Still, I find this trash take to be really disappointing from someone like Cody.

Service dogs aren't pets, they're legally considered vital medical equipment. However, even if the dog wasn't a service dog, no one is entitled to pet your dog, and dog owners shouldn't have to drop what they're doing anytime someone wants to interact with their pet. Additionally, kids can be rough with dogs because they don't know better. If a parent isn't teaching their child to ask permission before petting a random dog, they're also probably not teaching other ways to respectfully and safely interact with an unknown animal. Dog owners aren't obligated to put their pet at risk for some random person's pleasure.

I know in most cases you can just tell but how wild some dogs are that it’s not, but in the case that somebody has a well trained dog that isn’t a service dog and is just dragging it around with them yanno? i don’t know if that makes sense but it’s a question i’ve had.

Therefore, like a wheelchair or any other medical device, it's very illegal to mess with it as it can prevent the dog from alerting to a handler's issue and result in injury or death to the handler.

Whenever I’m on a plane, I sit and wait until most people get off and I have time and space to gather my belongings. I HATE cramming myself along with other people in an already small space.

Yeah cody not with you on the service dog thing, it is illegal in many states. Its a working dog and shouldn't be distracted. Thatd be like pushing buttons on my insulin pump and potentially hurting me because "people light up when they push buttons" come on now

Jesus the amount of people outraged about the service dog clip is insane. He said they were both annoying that's a fair opinion, plus he corrected himself after the fact. It's an honest mistake and now we are all more informed thanks to this video. Calm down Karens.

@marniluvsstrawberries There is no excuse for you not to know that... Most of them are labeled "do not pet", which should be enough. It's good that you know now. I imagine UK is similar to the US in the respect that the law doesn't care at all if you didn't know. Here you can straight up get a prison sentence if you distracting a service dog leads to the dog failing to preform a necessary task which then results in injury or other medical emergency for the handler.

@@Lindseyisloony get off your high horse, no need to sound so snooty. While I personally know not to touch a service dog, I've never once paid any attention to the writing on their vests, and I assume most people don't either. It's fine to not know everything, but you can educate someone without sounding like a dick.

Some of these comments are SO brutal. Cody was absolutely wrong about the service dog video, but it comes from a place of being unaware of the work a service dog does. He isn't being willfully ignorant or trying to encourage the endangerment of children or people with service animals. He's equating service dogs to regular dogs which is clearly a sincere mistake on his end. Cut the dude some slack, he's only human. The barrage of comments has probably informed him plenty.

IKR!? Some people are just itching to say horrible things and hate on people I swear.. I’ve seen helpful, educational comments, but also people saying he’s a horrible father, out of touch with reality, does no work outside of sitting in front of a camera, and that people have lost all respect for him,… like whaaaaattt, yes he’s wrong but he’s not the embodiment of evil lol

You may and wanted to do a little googling before saying it’s okay to distract service dogs. They protect people and save lives, so they need to be on the job when they’re in their vest.

"What is harassing service dogs illegal?" ... yes bro ☠️
@Lindseyisloony
@Lindseyisloony 6 ай бұрын
Harassment in general is illegal. He must not realize that that's literally what it's considered to be by law, not just something dramatic someone said cause they didn't want their dog touched. Sadly even if that's the case it just speaks volumes and volumes about an adult person to 1) not know not to pet service dogs 2) think it's fine to not teach kids boundaries, manners, safety or common sense well before the age of 5. Being an adult and not knowing not to touch service dogs (without permission) requires an inherent lack of understanding of the basic idea of what a service dog is. It also sadly shows a pronounced obliviousness to the type of disabilities that benefit from a service dog. Like sorry but if someone thinks there isn't a problem with someone for instance making kissy sounds at a marked service dog going down the street then that tells me they haven't spent a minute of their life considering blind people. That's how Cody made himself look.
