a lot of people forget to mention the beautiful, soft, warm, almost lowpass filtered tone you get by setting tone and bridge pup to 0 and neck pup to 50-60% (then crank the volume on your amp and play softly slightly in front of the neck pup toward the neck).you get that nice "modern" booming sade/cherish the day tone... the jazz bass basically has a lowpass filter built into it that most people dont even seem to know about

I started to play two years ago with a P bass. Recently just bought a Jazz bass. If the knobs fully open the tone is a typical jazz bass growl. But turning down the knobs to about 50 percent I can get a warm tone. I didn’t like the neck tone with fully open tone knob. I thought these two knobs for volume.

I built a jazz bass from parts and added single coil lipstick tube pups with an Audere preamp.The range of tones is very good including the classic J bass sound.I'm pretty happy with it.

Actually, the Marcus Miller sound isn't cutting the mids like you did on your DI. He said himself in an interview with Sweetwater that he boosts the bass and Treble on his amps and doesn't cut the mids. This gives the impression of a mid scooped sound even though he hasn't actually cut any mids.

@trygd100 yes. Early in his career he had his 70s Fender Jazz Bass equipped with a Sadowsky 2 band preamp which he used to boost bas and treble.

Nice video! TQ My 78 J was recently restored with PV 74 pickups and Fender electronics with a 0.1 mF tone cap. I love the sound with round wounds. Witht e 0.1 cap, I can get from a reggae tone all the way to a more modern tone. Down side is when the tone is closed, it does have a bit of a muffled bass sound. My fav is neck fully opened and bridge very slightly rolled back.

Something you didn't mention, to get the Motown sound from a Jazz Bass with flatwounds and without a pre-amp....set both volume knobs on 8 and turn the tone to zero. I have done many KZbin bass videos featuring this tone. Otherwise, great video, Bro.

Yes, or the sixties pop vibe like Carol Kaye, with flatwounds and a felt pick. Makes for a crisp clean, even-handed performance in its own narrow frequency range that can be up in the mix without blasting out the other instruments with long wide booms.

I love playing in all kinds of the various possible tone settings, which enables a lot of personal expressiveness for my own enjoyment, however for the band I'm in I always end up with the bridge pup off and the neck pup cranked.

But I just don't want to watch your video where you recommend bass for beginners... and I'm just starting in this little world... Greetings from Argentina!!!

Or do what my uncle did: wire your pickups in series, and use a few effects to make your tone even fatter and darker, like chorus, slapback delay, a sub-octaver, a little pinch of overdrive, and etc

A little too much mute on the P sound. Lighter mute will nail it.

I’m hearing some smearing/modulation on your low E for the P Bass tone demo. This happens to me too when I turn my bass up on the EQ and wonder if anyone has developed some workarounds to get this tone without the pitch getting weird

Thanks Lazar. Absolutely for finger style, having both volume knobs at 50% and having the tone rolled back a little is a good general tone. The examples in this video were the more extreme settings.

I will always love the jazz bass but I always wanted the music man pickup on my jazz bass. Too bad it didn't quite work out that way. 🤕
@samu2655

I find I literally never touch the knobs on my basses. My jazz is always everything 100%. My P is always volume 100% and tone rolled back to the point all the unwanted HF content is gone. I find when searching for the right tone I get much better results by changing my strings, amp, playing style or set up. For me a bass there’s normally one setting a bass guitar sounds it’s best, getting the tone you want is then about adapting everything else around that.

There's a tone I really really want to nail. Sort of a 70s fusion thing, similar to Jaco's but darker and punchier, almost sounds like a synth bass. Listen to around minute 41 here, like what is this? Is there some chorus here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHS2iIqAmdSrkLM And just a minute each of these. These are both from a 1990 video game, but they are trying to replicate a certain sound with the bass, and I'd love to get somewhere near this somehow... kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6TIZJh9jquKfqM kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXumnpWfpcuhr6M

Sorry, but that's bullshit! The bridge pickup alone is useless otherwise you're Pastorious. The neck pickup is like a weak p. And both together are drowning in the mix. In other words. A Jazz bass is a useless bass. Get a P and you'll be heard!
