My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Thank you thank you thank you! My mower was only sitting without use for 2 weeks and I couldn’t get it to start. I thought it was the spark plug but after I replaced it, it still wouldn’t start. I was about to have a melt down thinking how am I going to get it in my car to have someone fix it and take a day off work because no one around here is open on weekends and the one mobile repair guy isn’t available until 2 weeks from now, meanwhile the grass is getting taller and I’m anticipating the HOA violation letter... Praise the universe I found your video, lifted it up and presto it started. Life saver! 😊

Great tip ! Worked perfectly. My B & S Tr110 sat all winter but in a garage. Used it in March and almost ran it out of gas. Put gas in and used it again in early May. Wouldn’t start. Let it sit for a while so the gas would seep in but still wouldn’t start. Nothing else was amiss (it’s fairly new) and I tried rocking it back and forth to free the float - no success. Then I viewed this video and tried the “secret tip” of tilting up the mower perpendicular to the ground and shaking it a little. Success ! Started right up and ran perfectly. So many thanks to the maker of this video !

6:58: I'm really glad you showed that because I was going to mention that trick if you didn't. Came' across that by accident when it wouldn't start one spring and we were tipping it to access stuff to check. When it started, we were like: "What changed?" Well, I remembered that we tipped it that other spring and tried that for kicks wondering if that may have done it, sure enough it got running! I didn't know "why" that worked (Well, at least until you explained it here, lol! Thank you!) as I don't know much about engines, but it was consistently working.

THANK-YOU. I have never ever had difficulty starting my mowers after leaving them over winter. Set the choke, set the throttle etc, pull, start... but last summer I had to get a new push mower and I opted for the new no choke easy pull ... and left it all winter like usual. When it wouldn't start I thought, "Crud! I got replace the fuel." I saw your video on treatment on a shut off valve - good to know - but, that didn't help.... But, before I headed out to drain the old fuel I saw this video. I ran out and tried it. I had to tip it up a few times.... it would start and then run out of gas... and finally it started flowing... and working. You are my hero!

You learn something every time you view this youtuber you really really do !!! My trick for whats its worth is easy start as we call it in the U.K. I just give it a few squirts and 99% of the time it will fire up.. If I have old fuel in I just lket it run untill the old fuel has gone !! Worked for me for over 40 years !! I also use top quality fuel Shell V power and if on a 2 stroke the best 2 stroke oil I can buy I have never ever had a problem starting my 2 stroke engines due to this !! Have passed on my thoughts to many of my friends but they just dont listen ??? I had an Echo chain saw in the shed for over 6 years and using this method it started on the 8th pull I still use this saw today and it was made in the 80's Never fails So in a nut shel Good oil good fuel and you are good to go and your very very expensive machine will out live you "FACT NOT FICTION" I will however do what Chickanic has advised before I go the easy start route this year and see what happens .. I find Lucas oils "MADE IN AMERICA " TO BE THE BEST FOR ME ?? Thanks again Chickanic for a great bit of advice !!!!!!!!!!!!

I always let them run until they shut off from running out of gas after the last mow of the season. I hook a bungie cord to the safety shut off handle and the cross bar below on the handle then leave it in my fenced in back yard to run out. I obviously don't put any extra gasoline in the tank than what's it's going to need to finish up the season. Lube everything up and replace the air filter before putting away for the winter. Then in the spring lube the cable again, put enough gasoline in it to do the first mow, then afterwards while the oil is still warm, I change it, fill it to the proper level, and the oil is good for the season. Then fill the gas tank full. A little maintenance goes a long way to keep them running good. I have a Troybilt 21" cut walk behind mower with a Honda Engine instead of the B&S. So much quieter and runs great every time!

You can teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for the tip about tilting it up n shaking it. Ive worked at Lowe's for many years and since we dont do on-site repairs im limited at what we can do. I typically spray carb cleaner to test the engine, if it runs n stops i know it fuel. I will spray it again then pack the end of a rag in and pull it. Most times it will start n contine to run. Ive also used this trick for neighbors when there is water in the carb. Put fresh gas in the tank, blocking the air increases suction on the fuel n pulls the water out of the carb letting fresh gas in. Love your videos ill keep watching.

I through my ignorance of lawn mowers and small engines somehow already discovered your trick by instinct. I always did that tip thing to get it started. I have been fixing dead and dying mowers now for years. I ended up working at a small engine repair shop part time for a few years. The owner was a certified Briggs and Tecumseh service person and taught me volumes. I also worked on Snowmobiles( what I was originally hired for) and learned every aspect of repair and service on pretty much everything small engine. I still have the local shops begging me every spring to come work for them but I have enough here at home to keep me occupied. I did have my own back yard shop for a while( part time) but due to Cancer had to back off. Now I do limited work and mostly just for friends or acquaintances.

@@scottfirmanBefore I restarted my motor mower after winter I put in some add-in liquid from the local gas station. The station told me this replaced add-ins to the petrol that would have evaporated. @scottfirman

@birzky I guess I am not sure about what you mean by " add ins". I recommend Recreation fuel for all the people I know and those whom I work on their mowers. I found you get a lot less popping of the engine and on my riding mower, I noticed a big increase in performance. The reality is most older equipment was never designed to run on today's fuel. I even like the smell of the exaust more. It's not leaded fuel, but no alchohol sure makes a HUGE difference. Over the years, I do what works best and recommend it to others.

What I did was put my foot in front of front wheel as brake an lift mower onto same front wheel! (Just too help my back!)

@@stevez340 Oh yes! My Mom once tipped her mower to the side to clear some stuck grass with a stick because she was too impatient to wait for me to come and cut her grass for her. I know to only tip it in the side of the oil fill/check area. She tipped it the other way and completely flooded the air filter! She was always 'helpful' that way and every repair job in her home had to be done twice: first to undo what she did and then actually repair it properly. We have always been complete opposites. To pick a present that she would love, all I had to do is pick the one I would hate to have.

I find your videos very useful. I had a brand new Caterpillar 12000 watt generator with a 25 hp predator engine that had less than 5 hours on it and the closest caterpillar shop was 7 hrs away so I ended up fixing it. Turns out the needle valve above the float was jammed. The housing it was in had been made incorrectly I guess and the needle valve was stuck. I had never seen anything like it. It was a major job getting to the carburetor. Love the channel. Just found you a month ago.

Stabil gas stabilizer is an awesome additive that you should keep always in your gas container. Keeps the fuel from varnishing. I also change oil before first using in the spring as moisture can condense in the oil throughout the winter.

Awesome video, a lot of consumers leave their mowers out in the rain and snow, that is such a bad idea. Always keep them in a garage or shed cause water and engines don’t combine plus it’ll rust your cables and important engine components.

I have a Webb 53cm mower with a B&S motor and I am overall quite pleased with it. Not perfect, but good. However, starting when cold is a real pain. Three strong pulls minimum and after the winter, about seven! Tried this hack lifting the back end and it started on 2nd pull. Brilliant, thank you.

As always, good tips that don't cost any money. I got one that I'll throw out there. I have a couple of riders that, if left sitting for a long time like a month or two don't want to start right away. From experience I know that the carb bowl is empty. Yes, I know the right thing to do but that takes time and I usually have a job to get done and not much time to do it. if you crank them long enough with the choke on they will start. SO instead of grinding away I will take off the gas cap and blow really hard into the gas tank and hold the pressure a few seconds. Usually starts up right away. Works on small mowers too. Most times it will start like it should until the next time I leave it sitting for long time.

I have a LawnBoy with a B&S engine. A couple of years back, I thought I was going to have a heart attack trying to start it while continuing to pull the cord, over and over again. Before I keeled over, I decided to start taking things apart and found that the fly wheel surface was rusted. I also found a couple of spots on the flywheel that looked different than the rest. I used sand paper to clean up all of the rust and make everything shiny. Then I paid attention to those two odd looking spots and realised that they matched an attachment on the side of the housing. So, I loosened that attachment and gave it a gentle rub with the sandpaper. The mower started up immediately after that. I figure those two spots are probably magnets and that attachment is some sort of dynamo. Two summers of flawless operation so far.

Mine sat in the cold barn all winter and started with the 1st pull this year!! Woo-hoo! I have an old Weedeater 22 inch, and it has the bulb that has to be pushed 4 or 5 times to get gas into the carb. I did notice that the grass guard across the back is completely gone now. It threw a good sized rock out of the back, and my knee now has a ding along with a bruise. This explains why it threw small rocks out at me at the end of last summer. I may try to improvise something to hang back there and keep those little, and occasionally big, rocks away from this old woman's body! Good video...I love to watch you show us how to keep these machines running! I am a 73 year old widow and need all the help I can get. But, I love doing this stuff myself, too. 😊

Nice! Here in Flint, we got 2.5 inches of snow and it might melt over the week as we warm a bit. Mower time here is still a month away. I should go try to get something ready to sell. Practice how it is going to work with my slightly modified hand. Good tip! Mine has gas in it too, I’m certain. Last year I never cut my yard with the same mower twice. When fuel sits in a carburetta for some time, what happens is the "volatiles" evaparate off and the fuel "gums" up the small holes in the carburetta. It is best to run the fuel out before storing. If not, stripping and cleaning the carb is often necessary. IF you can get it started, the new fuel flow through it will often clean out the small jets. Your trick probably mixes the stale fuel and allows enough "non-gummed" fuel into the jets to start it. The change in reves indicates the new fuel cleaing the jets. .......it is just a thought.......
