Music’s Odyssey well that certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, medical advancement is always a good thing, also updating their scoring system of what is and isn't cause for concern would be great. But that mere fact that so many people are unaware of dangers/reactions/side effects of medications during pregnancy, it's scary how few know or think about the half life of some Meds that can stay in the system for months that can potentially cause major issues to unborn babies. And tragically not many think of the consequences of medications that may be desperately needed by the mother but "it's only 9 months you can go without" is a horridly often said thing, but it's not just 9 months it can take months or years to fall preggers. But as I originally stated that someone with a large (hell any) platform bought this issue to the public eye to open it for discussion is, imho something that can only be a good thing, the more people talk about it, the more information that is shared the more knowledge people gain and the more things can change as people find things that need to be worked on. And as a personal note to see someone talk about something I (and I know many other women are going through) am personally struggling with helps to make me feel a lottle less isolated and alone, because honestly and sadly not many talk about this issue so openly.

@@Sunnylyndis Yes! I’m a woman who has chronic pain and I want children one day. I have to take heavy pain medications and have an implant that chemically has given me a hysterectomy. I found this so funny as I’m currently pregnant and my fiancé doesn’t understand how much of your lifestyle changes during pregnancy, but then when Zach was in pain my hormonal ass started crying. I have migraines and they are worse during pregnancy for me and I know the frustration of having a crushing pain that debilitates you (given mine isn’t constant, it lasts hours to days) and not being able to take anything because you don’t know what is safe. I end up drinking a quarter cup of coffee and locking myself in my bedroom, lights off, blanket over my head, and try not to cry as I also try to fall asleep because tears make it worse. I really appreciate that Zach talked about how difficult it is for people who need to take medications or who are too sick to carry a baby, or who suffer physically and mentally through their pregnancies to benefit the baby. I am dependent, at this point in my life, on both opiate pain medications and antidepressants for my severe chronic pain, and because of both the pain and the medicines, I could not carry a child to term. It's a really difficult thing to know and accept, and we are often forgotten when people talk about pregnancy (and abortion). So thanks, Zach.
@tyblips6 жыл бұрын
I cant imagine what it would be like with the pain medication... But ive got adhd, and I highly doubt ANY doctors would let me take narcotics while im pregnant. Am I COMPLETELY dependant? Technically no... but I know that in combination with pregnancy I wouldn't be able to function very well, just as I am now theres a massive difference in my life the days I take them and the days I dont. Growing up before diagnosis and then being diagnosed but doctors in my small town refusing to give me these medications, fucked my schooling, I'm 23 and still havent finished high school because i just, couldn't do it due to lack of the proper resources. If i had to work while pregnant without my meds id be entirely screwed and absolutely miserable (I've had times i ran out and tried to go to work and it showed in my ability to get things done), not to mention the withdraw symptoms that would come if i were taking them consistently and had to stop due to becoming pregnant... My situation would be mild compared to others who have chronic issues that called for consistant medication. I'm damn lucky my situation is only as bad as it is, but i still worry that medication or not that im going to have sturggles when pregnant, if only for the fact ive been underweight most of my life and that alone would screw me over..

My husband and I decided to forego kids if we hadn't had any by the time I was 40. I'd been taking antidepressants and benzos, among other things, since I was 31. My psychiatrist helped me scale the meds down when I was 35, and suggested alternative therapies such as electroshock during pregnancy. Six weeks after I was fully off the meds, I started having panic attacks again and was dang-near suicidal. No choice - I had to go back on the meds. Pregnancy was contraindicated due to maternal health. I turned 40. We had no kids. It was OK: we had no burning desire to be parents, which was our biggest clue that we shouldn't be. We watched our nieces and nephews grow up and marry, and now we have greats!

Well that’s unfortunate. Did you know suicidal ideation and panic attacks are both very common antidepressant-withdrawal symptoms? I'm really happy the Zach, who suffers from a painful condition, did this because it points out how pregnancy can severely hurt a woman who has medical issues simply because of the restrictions and limitations of what she can do to decrease her suffering (not including the strain it puts on a body that's already in pain)
@SnowdropWood6 жыл бұрын
I have a particular form of migraine attacks. It's genetic, there is no cure, no preventative drugs, it can strike at any time, does so several times a month. It's clinically closer to a stroke than 'just a headache' as many ignorant people write it off as. And I am genuinely terrified about how to manage it if I ever want to bear a child. The head-splitting pain is so utterly agonising without a fast cocktail of strong painkillers, that people have actually killed themselves jumping through plate glass windows just trying to make the pain stop. It isn't a particularly rare form of disease, there are hundreds of thousands of people who have it, and it affects women more frequently than men. Yet still doctors are unconcerned and disinterested, and there is almost no information out there about alternative pain management options for it during pregnancy. Fortunately I don't want children for other reasons, but I feel for all those women affected by my disease and others like it, who come up against a wall.

Bernelle Pete I have the inverse disorder that Zach has. He had a connective tissue disorder that causes inflammation, arthritis and can cause stiffness and reduction of mobility overtime. I have Ehlers Danlos which is a connective tissue disorder that causes hypermobile and lax tissue which causes dislocations and pain. What he just outlined is the exact reason I’ll never get pregnant or carry a child. It’s just too hard on the bodies of chronically ill people. When you already feel sick or pregnant 24/7 it’s hard to justify throwing in another scenario that would cause more pain with even more limitations on treatment...

Zach, I was so thrilled you brought up the difficulty of being pregnant while having AS. I've done it twice (for real, not for a week... :) ) Thankfully it was before mine took off in earnest, and it was before I was on the injections, so I didn't have to give those up. I do, however, think you should have kept taking your meds through this experiment, the food/drink/exercise restrictions were enough to give you an idea of what it's like. You did get to feel a little of the pain of being pregnant with AS, but, if you really want to feel what it's like, carry 20lb around, hanging off your lower spine, for a couple of months. I'm pretty proud of you for giving this a good, honest, go, though. Thank you... I'd love to see Eugene try to go without alcohol for 40 weeks!.
@mayaosaka40766 жыл бұрын
asyoz I also was thrilled that he brought that up!! I don't have that condition but I do have another very rare disorder that causes pretty much constant pain as well as awful fatigue and general discomfort. I only recently read about the difficulties of these types of disorders during pregnancy and I was shocked at how horrible pregnancy can be with these conditions. I applaud women who endure it, as my condition is one reason why I do not wish to become pregnant. So I'm amazed by all the moms out there who power through it!!

I have AS as well and I was wondering what exactly did your doctor tell you your restrictions were when trying to get pregnant and while being pregnant and even for breastfeeding. I’m already taking the shots and have been for years so I don’t even know if I would be able to quit them for 9 months. It’s hard to deal with but I’m soooo incredibly happy you were able to have kids!! It kind of gives me a bit of hope I will one day too.
@asyoz6 жыл бұрын
I was pregnant pre-diagnosis. I knew I had a 'bad back' but didn't know I had AS (because no doctor would listen to just how BAD my damned back was)... Oh, and, I also have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome to complicate my AS (it's where your ligaments are basically falling apart as your spine fuses - good fun - not!). I've was on the shots (Humira, Simponi and Cosentyx, in that order, one after the other (never at the same time!!)). But I had an operation (unrelated) last December, but that pushed my CRP levels over my baseline so I can't get the injections anymore (I'm in Australia and there's a whole system for getting the injections paid for on our medicare system). Anyway, it means I've been off the injections since January and it's more painful, but OK. I have to say, if I were still in the early stages, as I was when I was pregnant, and I had to stop the injections for 12 months or so (I don't think you can take them while you breastfeed either, but check with your doc) I would definitely do it. Having a child would be worth the pain, in my opinion. One thing, though, I would seriously talk to your OBGYN about having a caesarian. There's NO way I'd go through labour with a fused (or partly fused) pelvis. If your OBGYN can't understand that - get a different one. Don't forget to get all your other meds checked, too. If you aren't 100% confident about your doctor's knowledge of meds being OK with pregnancy - ask for a consultant pharmacist's check. It just means a specialist pharmacist will have a look at what meds you're on and double-check whether they clash, and whether they're OK with pregnancy AND breast-feeding. One thing I will say - AS gets worse as it gets higher up your spine (until you're fully fused). If you are considering pregnancy - do it sooner rather than later if you can. Good luck with whatever you decide.

As someone who suffers from severe scoliosis and has to be on Advil pretty much all of the time, especially to sleep, and who is on anti depressants, if my medications don't change I will never be able to be pregnant. It just hurts to know that having basic needs to not be in pain either physical or mental can destroy your ability to have a baby. and it hurts to know that this will effect dating later in life. and it just straight up hurts. Thank you so much Zach for talking about this, because so few people do, and it was really wonderful of you to do this.

I don’t want to assume I know more about your pain and how to manage it than you do but over the counter pain medications aren’t for long term use. Ibuprofen is bad for the kidneys and acetaminophen/paracetamol is bad for the liver. Of course if you’re in pain and you need it then you have to weigh up the risks vs the benefits but if it’s daily use it might be better to see if your doctor can prescribe you something that’s safer/more effective. I’m not criticising, just trying to spread the knowledge to people who might not be aware.

Men can choose if they want to be around or not, so women should get to choose if they want to give birth or raise a baby at all. So get that shit opinion out of here.

I'm glad Zach was there to show the effects of pregnancy restrictions on people with health conditions. My best friend has narcolepsy and can't get back on her meds until she's done breastfeeding, so a few months to go still. She's so tired sometimes that it physically hurts because her body gives her no REM sleep. Meanwhile, a few years ago I went on the restrictions myself (my parter of 7 years at the time and I were trying to have kids and when you're planning, you try to get on the diet before you get pregnant) and had to go off my meds for hemiplegic migraines and change my anti depressant. I was under the supervision of a doctor too. Months later, I went into a depressive spiral that nearly cost me my life because and I was in pain almost all the time from one to two migraines a week. tl;dr: Pregnancy is hell on women with medical conditions and they deserve respect. They also deserve public and private support if they want to adopt instead of being discouraged because they have medial conditions (actually happened to me).

J Bluewind or support if they want to use a surrogate and can therefore not breastfeed. I guess they could use a breast milk bank if one is available

Deborah Karp Agreed! Surrogacy is a viable option that should be embraced as well as co parenting. And breastfeeding has health concerns to consider as well, so women who use donor milk or who use formula shouldn't be looked down on. :)

I'm 9 weeks pregnant and won't see a doctor till I'm 11 weeks, so I'm a Dr. Google patient right now, unfortunately. They probably googled a lot of the same things I have, lol.
