Hi Wendy, don't know if you will get to see this. I was watching this video with you playing the 300 year old cello, my son, who is a typical 8 year old boy, was watching T.V. and playing video games (keeping busy during this lockdown) it got to the part where you started playing and my son paused everything and came over to me, "who and what is that Dad" he asked...I told him it was a cellist called Wendy Law who is playing a 300 year old cello, he then said "That is so beautiful, its making me cry happy tears inside". Just thought you would like to know that. Thanks Wendy, it gave me the chills too. Lots of love from Nova Scotia, Canada

If this is that old, it may be made with wood grown during the "mini ice age" in Europe. Back then the wood was denser because of slower growth and it affected the resonance of instruments.

I agree. There is something special about the sound of older instruments, this one took my breath away. I know in guitars, they say the finish and the glues they used make a difference as well as the wood. And of course in the case of a hand made instrument, so does the person that created it. Very special cello and a special arstist too.

Exactly, it sounds amazing and I'm telling the hi fi nuts to watch this for a audiophile test. I made my own speakers with radical acoustic stuff (I'll never go back to normal speakers). It's a 4" full range driver and 10" woofer, but acoustics are different (see my ch). I have been developing them for nearly a year and got to the stage where they continually blow me away (like hearing them the first time) and I admit that this video did make me get a bit misty. lol

Wendy you are so right talking about that amazing instrument, I am also endlessly fascinated by old instruments. Who made them? How did they make them? From what materials? Whose hands has that instrument passed through? What wonderful history caused those marks and patina? Where has it travelled? Where has it been played and to whom? How much of the instrument and finish is original? Etc. When I read about or watch clips of virtuosos like yourself I always long to know everything about the unique instrument being played. You are so lovely with such a pleasant engaging personality, and your skill and artistry seems so effortless! Thank you so much for posting and sharing your fun tour of London!

Dear Wendy, It's wonderful to see you introduce the Dodds-Jacqueline Du Pre's cello-bow to the audience - thank you! I often heard a Dodd violin bow at the Austrian Lockenhaus Festival with Gidon Kremer, where he most recently played with it on his Amati violin, which, like this cello, resonated quite sonorously in the lower registers - but the violin bow seemed to me to be of a lightweight construction - at least in the hands of Gidon Kremer. Should you ever meet at Gidon Kremer, you can ask him about it - he is always helpful in such matters - this also applies to Mischa Maisky or David Geringas, who all enjoyed playing there in Lockenhaus/Austria in the eighties and nineties - Boris Pergamenschikow was always there gladly there, but he is no longer; I remember a piece with him that was called "Snow Maiden"; it must have been composed from Sofia Gubaldulina; I also recommend the compositions by Lera Auerbach to you; mostly these are commissioned works by Gidon Kremer for KAMERATA BALTICA; much of it was published by Sikorski in Hamburg. You should also know the compositions of Alfred Schnittke - if you don't already know them - everything from the circle of Gidon Kremer. - Wish you a Happy New Year, lots of energy, and some interesting videos for us on KZbin. Best wishes from Vienna! Helmut

Always felt that way about wooden sail ships- put many trees together, add some brass and they get a soul of their own. Also, with similar age katanas and spears you don't have to think- once you hold one or even come near one you just know and (feel) it's history. Did not think wood can be as conductive. Sounds like a beautiful old instrument from a different era. Even on speakers. Thanks for sharing, nice clip.

4:28 "This is by Dodds" ... well, just 'Dodd' is fine haha. I assume it's a John "Kew" Dodd. He made bows very inconsistently. Some were absolute gems and others... handle like golf clubs. He also (as legend has it) was so poor that he worked for food, and in order to make the silver parts for the bow, stole silver spoons from houses he visited and had them melted down by a local jeweller. Quite the character! He is also one of very very very few makers (actually, the *only* maker I know of) to cut out the shape/curve of the bow without the need to bend it over a flame later, which is now standard practice.
