As a newer and hobbyist soaper, I really love the different suppliers' premixed oils. Ive seen lots of soapers online make fun of them, but they are so convenient and easy for someone that just dabbles. Nurture Soap's and the two I've tried from Brambleberry all made wonderful bars. 🤷♂️

in lab when we mix lye solution, we place the container in some ice. that too helps it not get so warm (using room temperature water is more accurate since ice is less dense than water). and most importantly: water first

When I first decided to make CP soap, I bought a Brambleberry kit. That kit included a scale and PPE, plus a top quality loaf mold and far more lye and FO than I needed for the kit. The kit was not cheap, but a) they offer free shipping on kits; b) everything cost less than if I made separate purchases, The soap was a complete success! I've moved on to cosmetics formulation, but I still make the occasional loaf of soap - using my kit equipment.

Curious, because I allways thought that cold proces soap was a cheap hobby to try. The first time I did it, i just used the cleaning lye, the kitchen scale and used kitchen oil (filtred with cheese cloth). Tupperware as molds. Of course that gives you a colourless and odourless bar, but good enough to check if you like it. After that you start picking new oils, essential oils, molds... And maybe a kit, to have it all together. I'm not shaming this kit, just saying that, just to try if you like doing cold processed soap, maybe you dont need to purchase anything. That step is just for upgrading your soaps. Sunflower oil soaps (the oil that we use to fry in south europe), makes creamy soaps. Not a lot of foam, but really nice texture.

The salt looks like tiny crystals because it is a crystal! It is the mineral halite (NaCl) and is usually found in evaporite deposits.
@rachaelbroomfield907211 ай бұрын
Hiya, a chemist here! When adding your sodium hydroxide to water I would add it in small portions at a time, fully letting it dissolve and then adding the next portion to be a little safer! It may take a bit longer but should minimise the impact of rising temperatures which may be useful for those who are (and should be!) cautious around it. Bases burn but are safe to handle as long as you respect them and do things in small scales 😊 I love your videos - they are so satisfying!

Definetely check your gloves if they are resident to NaOH if working with lye solution. If not, it can be worse than without gloves as they can melt into your skin. Without gloves you usually realize it quickly and can rinse it off. So be close to a sink as well.

Pretty nice kit! The one thing I'd like to see different would be for them to send pre-measured packages of lye. That would save folks the expense of buying a scale if they just want to try CP soapmaking to see if they'd like to pursue it as a hobby. Plus, what are you going to do with that massive bottle of lye if you decide CP soapmaking isn't for you?

I’m honestly surprised they don’t have to add a substantial upcharge for shipping the sodium hydroxide. I work in hazardous chemical waste management and the shipping regulations and fees for corrosives can get a lil bonkers sometimes. If there is a cost and they’re just absorbing the brunt of it, good on brambleberry for doing that for their customers tbh
@jonnysetzler585911 ай бұрын
Also fun sodium hydroxide moments from chemistry major undergrad labs: the pellets are very hydroscopic, as in they absorb moisture from the air very readily, so when I dropped one of the pellets on the bench of my fume hood and didn’t realize it, it sucked water out of the air, started sweating, and melted in its own sweat into a highly corrosive NaOH goo. Which I then almost put my hand into 😅 so yeah lye safety is v important, keep an eye out for any stray pellets that fall onto the work surface

To anyone outside of the states considering a cold process brambleberry kit… don’t. They do NOT ship lye internationally, but do charge the same crazy high price even though you’re missing one of the most important ingredients. Quality of the kits is amazing, and if you live in the states I highly recommend them! If you aren’t it’s a waste of money and a completely shameless ripoff though. They should NOT be charging the same price for international customers. You are paying for a key ingredient they don’t send, it’s stupid. I would love to buy their kits, but I just can’t justify it when they’re charging international customers the same price for something we can’t receive. A thing of lye where I live is about $30, I’m not paying that after spending over $100CAD with shipping for a soap kit, that’s ridiculous. It’s awful that they don’t adjust the price.

Another thing I’d like to note is.. these kits aren’t meant to be used to make stock to sell. I have heard of people buying bramble berry kits and using them to make soaps they intend to sell. Oh BOY is that a waste of money! They kits have the convenience of being all put together and with instructions. You pay a premium for that. And for $6 a bar for the the cost to make the bars…it’s so inefficient. These should be used for fun, practice, or to make gifts. Not to make stock to sell.

I notice you said "when you put lye water in deionized water" As a chemist, you SHOULD NEVER put lye water in normal water, but the contrari, acids ALWAYS into bases, not the other way around. In this case water acts as the acid (low pH) and lye as the base (high pH), because if you put base onto acid, the EXTREMELY exothermic reaction will end up in splashes of chemical compounds all over the place, and the poring MUST be slowly and, ideally, little by little every time, giving the solution time to cold down a bit.
@fancyfilly811 ай бұрын
Would you still consider it an expensive hobby after the start up costs? I really have no frame of reference for costs of various oils and lye etc

Ive been soaping since the late '80's - early '90s..... Its more expensive now but the oil options are SO much better.
