Kiln elements build up an oxide layer when they heat up. This helps fortify the elements and protect them during subsequent firings. If you were to fire new elements with pottery inside the kiln, your elements would be competing with your ceramic for the oxygen and cause the oxide layer to be uneven, potentially causing weak points during future fires.

that is so kind of you to share! I think that's what I'm worried about investing in a bigger kiln-- I'd keep the smaller for when I can't fill it, and the bigger one will sit unused 360 days out of the year 🤷♀️

I was flipping through a book with my daughters about ancient civilization and there was a cup with marks like the ones from your shredding tool. So I told my daughter that I could tell that they had a wheel to make that cup. It could've just been trimmed on a turn table, like you do here, but the lines were too parallel to have been done another way.

Can i stop holding my breath now, oh my, what a ride that was. I too love my shredding tool, early in when my pots were heavy and thick, i could trim away, however i now see that its a lazy way, for me, to throw, so now stuff is getting thinner, ive gone through a few bottoms and or walls. the original turn over was heart stopping and also getting stuck in the kiln, i like the shape pre beating with a wooden form, still looks good, great 'spark' moment for changing elements, bonus section for all kiln owners. Nice size garden for your dog and growing veggies. Like the dark colour of your cooked head, Stool, sorry were past Halloween now. great job and in proportion to the stool size the nose was perfect x

Hi Mia, ...I learned from Miroslav Tichy how to build simple cameras myself. Bill Ritchie's (Seattle/USA) ideas and small printing presses inspired me to build micro and nano hand printing presses myself. Since my childhood (bricks, fresh from the press of a brickworks) and in the 70s, in our community, with a lump of clay in my hands, following group discussions, your sincere and lively way of dealing with the medium of clay has made me want to do this to get a "beginner's pottery" with a turntable and a 3 liter kiln. So thank you for that and let's see how it goes, e.g. on my channel here ;-)

Kiln elements oxidize to form an alumina oxide layer around the core, which helps protect the element and make it last longer. The goal is to create a uniform, dense oxide layer that’s well bonded to the base metal. I looked it up, as I didn’t know, either. 😘🙃
@colormeinfluenced699729 күн бұрын
I’m not a potter so forgive me if this is a silly idea but could you make a cardboard template of the octagon top of your kiln and then you wouldn’t have to lift the heavy/oversized items into the kiln to see if they fit, you could just lower the cardboard template over the item on your table. Thinking about it…you could cut eight strips of cardboard the length of the depth of the kiln and tape them together (making a cardboard sleeve version of the inside of your kiln) and slip it over the project and then you’d know if the piece was too tall for the kiln.

Instead of doing a traditional atachment o the nose, carve a shallow creese and fire it unattached. Then cement the nose in after all fireing is done.

With a few modifications he would've actually made an excellent slug trap, or a hedgehog home! For a slug trap you'd just need some small one inch openings around the base and then pop a low dish full of dark beer in there overnight. The slugs will seek out the beer and drown themselves in it (what a way to go!) and they will like it being dark and moist underneath the pot as well. For a hedghog home you'd need a bigger opening obviously (they like longer, narrow, tube-like openings) and then stuff some straw in there.
