edit 5/29: *BEFORE COMMENTING ABOUT THE COMMENTARY/CRITICISM I TALKED ABOUT* : I recommend watching this video about vintage fashion in general where we can wear certain eras of clothing without being associated with their dark past, but should still *acknowledge* that past especially with the oppression surrounding it. The saying "vintage fashion, not vintage values" I think applies here 👉🏼 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGaqcn2ilNuLrqs I decided to do this themed mystery box video a little different than the last because I wanted to fully explain what the aesthetic is + criticism surrounding it so let me know if you like this type of format! I know it's a little bit longer than my usual thrift store mystery boxes, but I had so much to say 😅

I loved it! Thank you for doing so fr ❤️ I really like cottagecore but I remember once, while looking at the comments in a video about it, someone pointed out the lack of variety in the pictures shown and a girl honest to God replied that it's okay that there's not much poc representation in the aesthetic because "cottagecore was invented by white people" and not everyone should participate ._.

i'm really glad you discussed the criticisms around the aesthetic! i'm from uganda where a majority of people do live a very cottagecore life but somehow we get labelled "backward", so there's kind of a double standard with the romanticisation of this lifestyle. but annyywwaaayyy i was happy as always to style you 😊 and i'm glad some of the pieces worked out 💛💛

That is such an interesting point, half my family are from North Africa and they also live simply like this but it is not as romanticised, it is seen as being more of a peasant than anything else. I don't think I would have thought of that if you hadn't brought it up lol. *TW for meat eating animal farming stuff* : A big part of this lifestyle if you have a farm and eat meat is slaughtering animals as well, in Morocco some of my family lived in the city and some had a farm in the country. And even in the city back when I was a kid at least, they would buy live animals at the local market and butcher them themselves. Once when I was 5 I made friends with a sheep for a few days and one day we had dinner and I wanted to see my sheep friend and they told me after that I had eaten him. I was devastated LOL, but that's the reality of living a "simple" life for a lot of people right there.

I’ve noticed that too with this aesthetic! I’m half Cuban and half Salvadoran and both sides of my family come from rural areas of their respective countries. They’re everyday lives are what would be classified as Cottagecore and would be considered trendy if westerners were doing them but instead they’re also seen as backwards.

I don't get some of the criticism. If it's based on an English countryside kind of living then how does that match the indigenous lands criticism? English people in England on their land? Maybe it's more the American take on it but I'm Scottish & so that's not as much of a thing here

I love that you addressed the issues around this in such a sensible and balanced way. I've seen some people properly go off about it being all bad, but mostly that relates to the colonialism issues, and honestly who thinks it's a good idea to romanticise that?! Certainly as a Brit, I'm not at all proud of my colonial past. But there are some amazing aspects of cottagecore that take us back to a time where we were skilled at things like cooking and sewing and more sustainable ways of living, that until recently had made way for consumerism and capitalism. I often forget that to someone in the US, romanticised countryside living pulls so close to the Anne of Green Gables aesthetic that it can be problematic in that sense, but here in the UK we see the countryside very differently, and it's more about your great great grandmother living in a cottage in the woods, and not a huge colonial home. It's important that we still understand though, that the reason there are very few black people in rural areas like mine is because the countryside here can be a very closed minded place. A lot of British people will tell you we don't have racism here. Most of those people live in all white communities.
@HopeWren
@HopeWren 2 жыл бұрын
I would generally agree with you on this one. I'm British/Scottish & so for me it has nothing to do with colonialism. I do however acknowledge that it might take on a different setting/meaning in different countries

I think the appeal about cottage core is more about the simpler times before technology. The thought of just going outside and walking through a meadow of grass with the wind gently blowing and then returning home to the smell of a freshly baked loaf of bread. A time before huge cities and the chaos of everyone going everywhere. A time where a community would work together and be there for each other. Now there are so many people who don't even know their neighbor despite being so close that in some cases only a wall is between you.

Tbh, my 2 cents on the polemic surrounding cottage core is just that... Why does every single aspect of anything have to be problematic these days? I mean, I'd understand if there was a huge amount of people romanticizing the social assets of the colonialism era and saying "cottagecore is bringing women back to the kitchen yay!"... But the fact is that, all I've seen is women happily choosing this style as inspiration to take some hobbies like cooking or sewing, I know they're considered "feminine" chores but if someone is enjoying those things not as women chores but as hobbies, isn't that empowering per se? Also, why can't someone enjoy the prairie dress style without being mistaken as an advocate for how society worked back then? 😂 Some styles are just cute, I mean I like 50s fashion, I definitely don't like that kind of society, me dressing a bit 50s is problematic because I'm "romanticizing" that era? Or am I just "romanticizing" that particular style? I think it's different from someone saying "ah back in the 50, when women were ReAl wOmEn and everything was perfect!!!!1". That is definitely what romanticizing is all about, imho. This is an answer to the articles linked, not the youtuber ofc, I know everyone tries to be more mindful of problematic things and that's admirable, but I still think that a bit of differentiating between actual problematic sh** and nitpicking discourse is fundamental.

I agree 110%. It's mind-blowing how some people have the ability and desire to make everything to be an issue and turn anything into something hugely political, discriminating or offensive. Most often it's not even the group of people in question, that states to be provoked or hurt by the matter or subject, but just some completely other random community on their high holy horse, defending and fighting a fight that no one has asked them to. I must say I admire the level of imagination though.
@Caroline-hw9yw

I see your point and for the most part I agree, but I still think it's important to acknowledge the aesthetic's possible flaws even if we aren't totally condemning it. Personally, as someone who struggles with severe social anxiety, the idea of an isolated area where I can enjoy nature and a slow lifestyle without having to interact with neighbors or other people often is really appealing to me. I would never outright say that cottagecore is evil and no one should like it or whatever, because I happen to like it very much. With this being said, I still think it's important to acknowledge the implications of being able to run away to some rural area in the mid-west and live care-free on a wide stretch of land that many indigenous people were killed for. Obviously the people engaging in this trend aren't responsible for that and likely they're not in favor of those events, but it's important to highlight the vast inequality that still exists between Native Americans and white Americans, which can easily be represented by this dynamic. There's a lot of privilege embedded within the aesthetic that doesn't get talked about as often as it's praised. Even just among white Americans, it takes a lot of money to be able to afford to not have to worry about your material conditions. You have to have money to not care about money. I don't see a problem with the dresses or the hobbies but the overall idea of returning to nature and rejecting hustle culture is for very specific groups of people, those who don't have to work their ass off to survive. Everyone can enjoy what they want to, but we can acknowledge the bad parts of something without disliking it or condemning it in its entirety. It's also a bit of a red flag when most cottagecore footage looks like it'd be right at home playing in the background of a voiceover of the 14 words.

I will say that it’s kinda annoying how people always talk about liking a style from a certain time era as if enjoying the aesthetic is glorifying the time period. Most people who are actually involved in a vintage or vintage inspired aesthetic do not wish to live in that period. The vintage fashion community made a video about this a while back, which is definitely worth a watch

Totally, I wasn’t trying to shame anyone from not wearing the style, especially since the whole video was me mainly wearing the style, but as a creator I want to acknowledge criticism that this aesthetic and many others because as harmless as it may seem, we still need to remember ways it can be hurtful to others and uplift the voices of those who are usually not heard within this aesthetic and many others. I recommend this video from Rachel Maksy who talks specifically into vintage fashion and the dark history behind it and how her and others always advocated for “Vintage Style not Vintage Values” 👉🏼 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGaqcn2ilNuLrqs

@@alexasunshine83 thank you for the info! I wasn't saying you personally were shaming anyone, I just think people often make everything "problematic" and yes, maybe the style is a bit problematic.

Love these types of videos, you’re my fav KZbin thrifter! You should try your strawberry sweater with the white ruffle skirt, might be fun? Also, I’m thinking of dyeing my hair and wondering what you use for your pink shade?

I adore that style & the items felt a bit off but cottage core is more than clothing. Its environment, hair, makeup. Etc & you don't have those things to really bring them to life. You are so modern & you in those clothes felt very off. I did find the white dress/skirt combo the best though. Might be interesting if you did a full body/ environment (like go film & frolic in the woods) makeover in cottage core 🥰

Some of the clothing I feel fell into the 'preppy' aesthetic which is fantastic. That could be another themed video perhaps if you haven't done one on it yet. With the tulle white skirt, add a band t-shirt or a corsage with a blouse for the top and go full-out punk fairy core.

You could dye the neon corset a darker color to still get use out of it! A darker green could even it out and take away some of the brightness, or you could just go straight black. Rit dyes are cheap and easy to use (:

Such an incredible and informative video! Also for the purple dress with the sleeve issue, an easy fix would be to cut the little piece in between where it flares and then just tie it on your shoulders!

As I was watching your try-on portion and I heard you talking about how the corset was perfect except for the color, I thought, Dye it! And then you said you thought about dyeing it, lol. I hope you do! Just make sure to buy the dye that is specifically made for that fabric type. 😁
