I think the flail mower would be fine in the taller grass with a little more HP. Also, you can get Y-knives that do better in grass. I like the hammers when I’m in shrubby areas or expect small branches on the ground.

I was thinking the same thing- higher RPMs and crawling speed allows those flails to chop the grass up finer.... I believe a flail is made for tall grass isn't it?

I mow even higher grass with a flail mower and have a way better result. A bigger setup however i even have made a movie on it. Small tractor is underpowered for that flail mower also a bigger flail mower has more mass to it.

A layer of rock salt in the areas where you don't farm, like that equipment yard will kill almost ANY weed. it's organic, non poisoning to animals and birds, cheap and it works well. A 1/4 in spread or less will kill in about 10 days and last about 2 yrs per application.

If you had trunk protection around your orchard and walnut trees and some fencing, you could run the sheep in there, giving you extra grazing and not have to mow there either. The sheep will probably eat the bark off your trees if they can get to it though.

Back when we lived on a farm in Southern Illinois, I would have loved to have a Flail mower that was back in the 1970's. I could have used it to keep the fence rolls cleared. They make a Flail mower that was able to move the blades to the right so it could get under the bottom level of barb wire.

With long grass and a low horse power machine you need to slow down much more. It's simple maths. You have a certain rpm, the grass that gets cut with each rotation will stop the next later from being cut. The weight of the grass cutting will hold down other young grass. If you slow down you will get good results. We do fire lines with a flail to 1m (3ft approx) at 1km/hr with good results

An iron pipe post fence usually lasts for years with hardly any maintenance. The flail mower can handle rocks and protrusions better than the brush hog so going into unknown territory of hidden metal would be for the Flail. It's just a better all around mower with the off-set and vertical cutting capability for trimming trees, shrubs and under bottom fence board/wire.

I really like the flail mower when working on food plots for wildlife, because it leaves a nice, even layer of thatch behind. By comparison, a rotary mower will leave windrows, which means there's no green mulch on some areas and way too much in those long strips it leaves behind. If you go a little slower with the flail mower, after broadcasting a highly diverse seed mix into tall, standing vegetation, you get a very nice layer of mulch over the plot.

Hello Evan! L8ve all your videos! As someone who used a 145cm Flail to mow nearly 20 acres of neglected hay-field. I have a tip for you! Go slower, flail mowers can't go as quick as a Bush Hog but will leave a much cleaner cut. Kind regards, a fan from Sweden.

Evan, I run a Woods BB48x on my B3200 32hp. Still bogs down even going slow in dense brush. Might suggest dropping from 5ft to 4ft. I think you would love the flail mower with Y-blades in grass. Hammers are for heavier brush I think some are capable of 2in or more material. Less of a cut quality with hammer blades though.

JudithB I think everyone is cleaning around their places right now!!! We arent in a fire ban, but have been close for weeks, so mowing and cleaning helps with fire safety for us. I bet you will be trimming up trees along the hay field after all that ducking and pushing limbs!! We got a lot of small junk trees that are crowding the driveway and my old peach trees are done and need to come out too! My projects are coming along slowly, the plumber will be back this week to finish that mess up, and slowly sorting closets and the leather shop getting rid of stuff. My son is getting ready to start cutting wood again, I help split and stack. I am not ready for that!!! LOL!!

Hi Evan, the Flail mower is designed for rough scrub and requires speed to operate at its most efficency so putting on your least powerful tractor would give dissapointing results. When you are clearing the fence lines the flail is most sensible as the hammers can deal with stumps and branches easily its designed to multch these things not cut grass.
