I use the Sennelier fixative for my oil pastel drawings in my sketchbook, and the trick is to layer slowly and lightly. Usually I do three layers and it stays put super well! I have not tried it on soft pastels, but my guess is that any fixative works best using light, gentle layers
@emhuesart Жыл бұрын
Fantastic tip! I have since applied more layers, and the pastels are staying put much better. I am going to look into getting the Sennelier fixative when I finish the can I am currently using (Krylon spray fixative) 😊

I can't believe this was your first shot at it! You're such a talented painter. I haven't used my pastels in years - mostly because of the mess, but you're making me want to pull them out again. I remember using crystal clear to coat it, however this can affect the colour a bit. I've seen other store them with a sheet of wax paper or tracing paper on top. Btw, you will enjoy the painting experience even more with a less textured paper, pastel paper is not as rough as cold pressed. I remember really enjoying working on a rough craft paper. Toned paper works great! Can't wait to see your future explorations!!
@emhuesart Жыл бұрын
Thank you Yellow (can I call you Yellow? 💛) - Thank you so much for all of the tips! I think toned paper would be so much fun with these! I also think you're right about the paper texture, I will definitely explore using smoother papers with them in the future. :-) P.s. I'm watching your A.I. picks my palette video right now, and I'm loving it! I had no idea James Gurney released an A.I. version of himself! So cool!

It says in the back of my fixative that you should coat soft pastel work about 4 times. The studies turned out gorgeous. I hate to get my hands messy but it was very relaxing to watch you sculpt the face with this medium.

Great piece and I love the texture that the pastels make! Exploring mediums is really fun, but I do find myself changing art styles when I do though to accommodate the medium.
@emhuesart Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! It is difficult to stay consistent with style when changing mediums and this is something I have struggled with too. When I'm trying a new medium I try to think of the key things that I enjoy about my past work. For me that is shape, color, and directional brushstrokes! 😊

I’ve done a lot of research, best idea is rice paper, or glassine. Store it in a cool dark place until ready to sell. Sell in a frame, make sure you give the buyer an idea of how to keep there art is the best condition. Soft pastels can be so tricky.

Using hairspray as a fixative works really well, on soft pastels, graphite, and charcoal. Just give it a really good coat like a bit excessive with like level 3 or 4 of strength. I use Herbal Essence and i can run my finger over the charcoal with no residue on my finger. I find the same results with soft pastels.

I have tried pastel. Same way you did, just used watercolor paper. I can tell from other people expierence pastel paper is the key to keep pastel stay in place. As soon as I can I want to buy at least one sheet of pastel paper to try and it is also good for oil pastel multiuse is always a plus.😊
@emhuesart Жыл бұрын
Ah! Thank you so much for sharing. That makes total sense! 😅 I applied more coats of fixative as someone suggested, and it really helped. I think watercolor paper is okay for quick sketches, but maybe not finished pieces. That is good to know for next time! 😊

Love your art Emily. I didn't like soft pastels, way too dusty for me. Wore a mask when using them as I found myself coughing a lot. (Different brand, not Artxx). You could always use parchment paper to prevent smudging. I know other YT artist The Last Coffe Bean uses clear modge pod to prevent smudging.

I have sensory issues with chalk/charcoal etc- with that being said, would this possibly trigger that? Is it soft like oil pastels or hard like chalk & charcoal?
@emhuesart Жыл бұрын
Ah good question! These pastels are chalk - though most of them are quite soft, some of them were a little scratchy. So this might be a medium to avoid! I believe you could get a similar effect with oil pastels though 😄 Thanks so much for watching!
