I think most people that grew up in Hawaii eating Hawaiian food, never gave it much thought about how it is eaten. But now that I've seen so many newbies just eating poi by itself, I understand why poi gets a rather bad rap. Sometimes just the lomi salmon, too. Now when I talk to someone about eating poi, I tell them that it's kind of like white rice or a plain piece of bread, you don't eat it by itself. When Amanda showed how to mix the poi with lomi salmon and lau lau, I was happy. You did great young lady! BTW, my haole wife, from AZ, likes her poi two-day old, with lomi salmon of course. Her favorite has always been the haupia. What a coicidence, TabiEats put out their Hawaii video the same time as you. Too bad you couldn't take them to Waiahole Poi Factory because they went to Poi Bowl. Mahalo for this video!

Definitely do a full day driving around the east side of the island to the North Shore. Tons of small local places to try. Be sure to add the Mac Nut Farm as a stop. Great place to take pictures, sample of coffee and Mac nuts. Plus a good stop to use the bathroom. I recommend Ry’s poke shack, and first stop at the Leonard’s Malasada truck in Hawaii Kai, eating them at the Makapuu look out.

Watching this video made me miss Hawai’i so much. Every time we went to Waiahole Poi factory, we would eat it at Kualoa Park. My girls love the chicken long rice. Plus, the mountains are breathtaking. ❤❤

Waiahole Poi Factory was a good choice to take someone new to Hawaiian food, especially after what was probably the Poi Bowl at Ala Moana. Action Kid might also have enjoyed the meat at Helenaʻs. I was surprised you guys donʻt really care for chicken long rice (one of my favorites to go along with all the other things you had, including poi.) Satoshi of TabiEats says it's his favorite "Hawaiian" dish, maybe because of his Asian palate. Action Kid looks Chinese, so I thought he would like it. I also wonder why squid luau is made with octopus and we never say "tako luau" or "octopus luau." It was also interesting to learn your tastes in juices. I love passion orange or passion guava, but my favorite now is the Hawaiian Sun lilikoʻi lychee, if it's available.

I grew up having poi as part of my meals! Poi is a type of food you have to aquire the taste for!!! Hawaiian food there is freshly made and soo Ono!!!

I was just there yesterday around noon time. I ordered the Kanaka Nui. Wasn't impressed at all, except for the Squid Luau, which tasted awesome, LauLau was dry (hate to say, I had better LauLau in Cali , Lomi salmon has no salmon, Kalua pig was a little dry.

​@AmandaFelixEats because it's suppose to be squid in the squid luau. But some would use tako as an alternate. It's similar to Shepards pie. People will use hamburger but you're suppose to use mince lamb meat instead hence the name "shepards" pie. Haha Great vid!
