Fries are a Belgian creation. It is thought that they came to be in a village that ate these tiny fried fish. When the potato was introduced, during the winter when the rivers from which the fish came was frozen over, they carved the potatoes in rectangles to mimic the fish and fried them as a replacement. They turned out really great so while the fish have been mostly forgotten, the fries have spread and became THE traditional Belgian specialty. As for Americans calling them French Fries, that is presumably a result from World War 2. When the American soldiers were stationed in Europe, they were spread out far and wide, unsure even of in which country they were fighting at. Belgium has three official languages (though the German part is minute compared to the Dutch speaking Flemish part and the French speaking Walloon part). When they were given fries to eat by french speaking people, they thought they must be in France and these fries therefor must be french fries. Bringing them back to the states under that name, and not even properly preparing them with a double bake at different temperatures.

Your remark on chocolate is spot on, I'm a Belgian (Brussels) and somehow my favorite is good old "Côte d'or" chocolate from the super market. Fancy chocolates and pralines are more of a delicacy and a small gift you offer friends and close ones, or something you have on your counter to eat 1-4 a day ! They usually have stuffing and are delicious, but it's just not the same as a traditional good ol' bar of chocolate ! Great Vlog, the best way to enjoy Belgium in my opinion is just to eat while taking your time around ;-)

in terms of fries you need to go to the Overpoortstraat instead, go towards the saint peters square, and at the very end on your right you find what is in my oppinion the best fryery, as a student, though i must say all the genuine fryeries in that street are pretty good

French in french fries refers to the cooking method. Frying in a deep container of oil is called frenching or just french.

Ghent Nose candy are pretty sweet and interesting. Neuhaus and Chocolate Line were my favorite Belgian chocolates 🍫 when I went. 38% Milk Chocolate cacao, and one chocolate with oranges and marzipan was phenomenal

For fries, I suggest frituur Filip, ask locals, the tiny kot bcause he uses ox white fat which is much better taste and fat like, very near to Himschoot (Ghent old centre).
