Nobody has said it yet, but some people find it easier to think of it as an extension of your elbow, keeping your wrist slightly loose like with a long brush stroke. Looking good so far!

Brilliant video and one that I will watch again and again. Will look into the art of calligraphy more seriously. Got some reasonably priced dip pens. Dip flow problems experienced and then some. Once settled with regard to semi retirement/life etc. will get into this. There is far more to this than I realised.

An oblique dip pen. I have never used one, but have used dip pens. I have even turned some pens on my lathe. They can be very nice to write with.

@@Doodlebud I have been told they are very comfortable to use and also quick to get used to. I have one 'dip pen' left and it is the Moonman N6 glass dip tip with adapter filler nib to use as a fountain pen.

I (or should I say "we" as it was our class) learned all about calligraphy in school in the early 70's. How to write all the alphabet letters and all the swirls on the capital letters and page margins etc. Learned with pens and angled pain brushes the same as the japanese use.

I think you did marvellously! It takes a long long time to get the hang of it. Practice, as you say, makes practice, or something like that. 🙌. (Might I suggest copying out a book you like. That way you get to know the boom better and you get to practice more).

Much better than my first go would be! It looks like you weren't using the guide sheet for much of the first attempts and just using it as a reference next to the page. Super brave; I'd imagine that makes it much more difficult.

I used the guide sheet for some but also tried freehand once I got used to it. Had like 2hrs of video & cut it down to a few min of video.

I think that one of the benefits as you say is that it will help with the way that I use my fountain pens. Often wondered about this oblique style of writing that is where the nib is offset from the stem. I always imagined that it is a much better way to write and it is. Quite thought provoking this and something to undertake when things are a little less frantic for me. I thought that your writing during the video was really good. I thought that the Omas vintage pen you purchased and showed on this video was something like a grail pen for me maybe the perfect pen. Enough to do perfect or near perfect calligraphy with. However I guess that the work produced by a first rate calligraphy pen transcends even this. Thank you again for a really great video. Catch ya next time. D

Flex pens are great, but to haeb proper calligraphy strokes gotta go with a dip pen or at least a dip nib. The oblique makes it much more comfortable as well

Oh ho ho! The perfect dip pen for a gadget-guy engineer! Idk, I have very little interest in calligraphy (I'm a leftie, fgs!), but I love my dip pens. I started with ruling pens, which I was vaguely familiar with from drafting, but I got a glass pen as well, and I was hooked! I was hoping to get a Drillog (despite the price), or a Kakimori nib, but I think this goes straight to the top of the list. Thanks for sharing, DB!

You should try putting the lined reference sheet under the page you are writing on. If the paper is thin enough, you can see your lines through it. It will make practicing much easier. From what I see, this looks more like Spencarian script or Copperplate than Calligraphy. Calligraphy is usually done with flat nibs?
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud 2 жыл бұрын
The paper I had was too thick to see the lines easy, hence the tracing paper. I "think" calligraphy is more the types of strokes & then there are different styles. This book is modern calligraphy, which is based originally from the various strokes used in copperplate. I believe you can use all sorts of nib styles for calligraphy but the way the stokes are used is the different calligraphy style. At least this is what I've called from talking to Gemma.

Looks like fun! I started with Speedball pens in my early high school years, but got sidetracked for decades. In the past, the nibs weren't called nibs. They're the pens. Holder has been a holder, though. 😁 They became nibs after fountain pens took off. Looks like several high quality pens! Gilliot (sp?) has been around since the 1850s, if I remember correctly. Hope you enjoy this!
