I've tried Fiasp in the pump myself about a year ago and changed back to Novorapid after about three months. Main reasons were: 1. Strong stinging when bolusing 2. I could wear sets only half as long as with Novorapid as the site became inflamed very quickly 3. I needed about 30% more insulin because the added vitamin, which reduces the time Fiasp needs to peak, is known to build insulin resistances 4. Sometimes when correcting for a high boluses seemed to disappear and not affecting my blood sugar at all, only after multiple corrections they all hit at the same time causing the most dangerous lows I ever had All these problems developed over this three month period and immediately resolved themselves after switching back to Novorapid (except the resistance took a couple of weeks). The slight improvements in after meal spikes were not worth the strain it gave me.

I had Fiasp in my pump last summer and had a similar experience to you! Plus I had these awful site bumps, that were quite painful. The post meal spikes were gone, but the other side effects were not worth it.

Hi Danica, just a suggestion. I too had a few digestive issues and went gluten-free (although blood tests confirmed I'm NOT gluten sensitive. I know digest better and spikes have stopped. I also use American health super papaya mint plus enzymes when I have a lot of cheese or fatty foods. These two things helped me go from a 7.6 A1c down to a 6.8. Just thought I'd share.

This is very interesting. I will ask my endocrinologist about it next week. A tip for you...we use the exact same pump...Your reservoir contains slightly more insulin than the insulin needed to prime your infusion set. No need to waste 17-18 units of insulin just to fill the tubing. Pull your old cartridge out of the pump after it tells you "Cartridge Empty". Connect it to the new infusion set and fill the tubing with the remaining insulin in the cartridge. This can save you some insulin.

Good luck with the Fiasp!! I tried it in my pump last year and the post-meal spikes were gone, but I had some other nasty side effects like skin issues and burning :\ so I switched back to Novorapid. I hope it works well for you Danica :)

Danica my son tried the Freestyle Libre. He’s always hated finger sticks and at some point became non-compliant. He has had a double digit A1C for more than a year. After 3 months with Libre he was at 8.6!!!!! We are so pleased. We tried a CGM a few years back but, he would never calibrate (because of the finger stick) so it didn’t work out for us. Love the Libre, thanks for reviewing it.

Btw some times you still need to finger stick on the libre, I suffered with capillary a lot due to fibromyalgia but my boyfriend bought me a genteel lancing device for Christmas and its life changing

Hi. I love Affreza for dealing with high blood sugars that won’t budge even after I have taken insulin. Affreza seems to help make the insulin I have on board work better when I can’t get my numbers to budge. Also, thanks for your positive attitude and your vlog. It has really helped me in learning how to deal with my type 1 diabetes diagnosis for the past three years. You are awesome!

It has also led to my mom having to eat food before paying for it and me rooting through my bags after checkout, not realizing my finger never stopped bleeding from the prick and causing my food to look like it came right out of a crime scene. (My mom and I are both hypoglycemic)

Danica, thank you for your videos! I know you know this and I hope it's not taken the wrong way, but just a note to others - always consider the amount of fat and/or protein in your meals because high amounts of either impact carb absorption and insulin action times tremendously! I use the extended bolus feature on my Omnipod so much and it really helps, but pizza for me is like a twice a year thing because of what it does to my BG! And when you're low, fat (such as in ding dongs) delays gastric emptying so it's really not the best choice for treating a low. I use fat strategically - when I'm low I do a 15g carb juice box (or two if I'm really low) and if I need to keep it up, say if I'm low right before bed, I'll follow it with a spoonful of peanut butter about 15 minutes later. That's just what I find helpful, but I know everyone is different. I don't mean for this to sound judgmental because it's really not. I just thought it was worth a mention since I think the high fat content in literally everything you ate (pizza, ding dongs, white bread, deli meat, cookies, bagels/cream cheese) might have had something to do with your data. Personally, I probably would have tested it out with straight carbs as that would spike faster but not keep it there so long, but this video was still helpful to me so thanks again!

Ug. Just tried to get Fiasp, to try it out. Insurance denied, so it was going to cost me $1,523.99 for 30 day supply, (with the $100 off from the savings card). I guess I'll be waiting until the cost comes down! Keep up the good videos Danica, I've learned a lot watching them, especially after DX.

I had a desire to get an Animas Vibe pump (based on yours and others' postings on KZbin). While watching your Fiasp test I noticed the "Vibe" infusion sets are pretty much exactly the same as my brand new (3 months ago) Tandem T-Slim X2 that I opted for now that the Vibe is gone. I want to strongly recommend this new pump to you and anyone else who needs a pump. I've been a T1D for almost 40 years and a Medtronic pump user for the last 8 years. I wanted a pump with "bluetooth" capabilities for CGM use and preferred Dexcom technology over the Medtronic. Now that the G6 is available, it will work with the Closed Loop upgrade Tandem will offer (hopefully late this year or early next year) for the T-Slim X2. This pump also has a reservoir similar to your Vibe pump. The X2 appears to be so accurate, I'm narrowing my graph downwards between 80 to 150 MG/dL. Check out the Tandem people yourself. (PS: I noticed that we share the same Study Bible I and four others in my study group use.)

Danica, Danica, Danica...listening to your roller coaster readings and eating style reminded me of myself. I've been doing this for 62 years and my last A1c was 6.1 which was an increase from 5.9 but still enough to make the Docs happy. My eating style has been consistent and it is a well rounded diet. My lipid panels are unbelievably great for my age so the Docs want me to stick with what's working. For me...I am going to try and find a way to go back on Apidra while my Vibe is still functional. Found Apidra much quicker in and out. I am suspecting the Novolog has gotten inconsistent somehow. Maybe that varied potency issue seen on the report a few months ago. I've used fiasp since February (I live in Denmark), and yes it does sting! Much more than NovoRapid (NovoLog), even though that sometimes stings as well. I've also noticed that it makes small bumps under the skin that last longer than those that NovoRapid left. All in all, I had waaay too high hopes for it, but it is good, just not amazing. It's just a lot of learning again, after pumping with NovoRapid for 10 years. It doesn't really translate 1:1 with NovoRapid/-Log but it's close. You have to keep in mind that the recommended "active time" for NovoRapid/-Log is 4 hours, but it's only 3 hours for fiasp. Also, I don't buy the "bolus after meal" thing they use as a selling point. It normally doesn't work that fast - I bolus right before a meal, but preferably 5 - 10 minutes before a meal (depends on BG), whereas I waited 20 minutes for NovoRapid/-Log before eating. You also have learn to use the extended bolus function on occasion, something I'm completely new at, because fiasp can work too fast for some meals (like pizza and greasy pasta dishes), so you go low and then having to eat and then going high a couple of hours later when the meal kicks in. A food diary is very helpful when learning to use fiasp. :) P.S. Willing to pay $60 - $80 to try it!?! Wow, insulin is expensive in the US! I pay $42 (current exhange rate) without any subsidy (same for NovoRapid), but national health insurance kicks in after $160 out of pocket with a reduced rate of 50%, then after spending a bit more 75% and then 85% after $570 of total cost of medicine, so after 14 vials, making my total out of pocket expenses around $300 a year at most for all my medications (not only insulin)...

That's great! I'm in the U.S.and on Medicare. I pay ca $300 a vial when I'm in the donut hole (Rx purchases $1700 - 4500 in the year). Makes T1D an expensive hobby.

One issue with Fiasp and after meal spiking is the shortness of the tail (something we all wanted but didn't really think about what it meant). Went on Fiasp day it was available and my insurance was covering at same rate as Novolog! Check on long term use of non-diluted Fiasp vs 50/50 mix (or other % mixes). European users see much better results long term at infusion site and no difference in absorption rates (Someone at Novo kind of agreed when I asked them but couldn't officially say anything)(although each user's experience will vary)

Whenever I go low I always start with glucose tabs then a complex carb. They taste like sweet tarts and get into your system faster than orange juice.

whether it is Type 1 or Type 2 or a healthy individual in general limiting sugars and carbs is a much healthy way of eating food. Unless one is doing a very manual work, I don't see the reason to bulk up on carbs. You can have much healthier alternatives - proteins, nuts, dairy free products, green leafy vegetables, lots of salads. You will notice that your insulin units will come down. Having blood sugar > 200 for extended time damages body. just 2 cents. God bless

I have had fiasp for about two month. The thing I found out is it works good in my pump when I extend the bolus out over two and a half hours. Also noro novodisk is pricing fiasp about the same as novolog. So soon I hope all insurances have it.

If you can figure out how B3 lets insulin be absorbed faster PLEASE let me know. it may actually be useful in insulin resistance (trying it currently for that). Curious what you were told about dilution with Novolog (if anything) Don't think that taking half a dose of Novolog and half dose of Fiasp is a great test as I'm sure you realize.
